Seen good and bad feet on just about every type of lurcher over the years Ray, though i'm long in the tooth enough not to judge feet (or dogs) by the way they look. I've seen the worst looking feet run the spectrum and the smartest tightest feet smash like china.

The best feet work and the worst damage and break, simple as that for me!

If we are talking breeds (types) and their feet then yep, saluki types seem to run over almost anything, as do collie types BUT i've seen exceptions.

Also, some dogs are just accident prone and though they may have sound feet, the way they run quarry may just cause damage and an example of this was my last dog, his feet were great but over the years he lost, snapped or pulled out three nails on his back feet. His toes were sound but i believe his style of running (turning) on certain ground caused him nail damage.

Have to agree about running style. Dogs with a relaxed, looping style that saluki and deerhound crosses often have, seem to be able to float over trouble sometimes. Saluki crosses in particular sometimes have dreadful looking feet but do OK over rough terrain.

as for taking advantage....a field not 200 yard from my front door has had a brace of hares on it quite a lot reacently ....theres 3 ditch crossings to this field....my plan is to put 3 stop nets on here....and take one if i can with my 7 year old lurcher in the next week or so......

sporting??? well perhaps not in the purist persuit of the hare....however as an old poacher...it will be a bit of fun.....ive tried once and drew a blank....but i will try again

In my opinion netting a hare is as sporting a pursuit as coursing one and if you do enough until the dog begins to understand what's actually going on, instead of just chasing and getting lucky....... well that's when it really starts to get interesting.

It’s from working stock ... the sire came off a cattle farm in Australia and the dam was bred here from a dog that came from a working farm in Australia ... he paid £2000 for it.

All being well that should be money well spent. Pup looks a character.

  5. The only good reason for a harness is on a high drive young pup to avoid it's neck getting desensitised if you can't avoid taking it out in public before it starts to learn control. The collar is then saved for actual training sessions.

Having said that I've never used one myself. They remind me too much of those sad, untrained rescue dogs that can't be let off leash.

any of the irish lads on here, heard or know anything about the rathcreevagh deerhounds, bred in the republic, by a chap by the name of alan, is this alan charles who bred a good strain of deerhounds anddeerhoundxs, heard these dogs carry a bit of doxhope, and coursing lines in them, any of you boys, seen any thing out of them run, or are they just another money spinner, price tag of 1200 quid, just asking.

My bitch is that breeding. Don't know how good the pures are though.

Perfect size to breed lurches ‘ especially Deerhound crosses.

Did they not try again next heat Charts ?

If it's a small bitch from a line of tall irish coursing greyhounds the chances are that most of the pups would grow to the same size as they would have done if bred from a tall bitch. Genetically irish coursing hounds are tall and back breeding would mostly be dominant, whatever the size of the mother.

The occasional pup might well take after the mother in size but it wouldn't be easy to predict which one.

Personally I do like a rangy one so it wouldn't worry me either way.

This was a mating of a Doxhope blooded deerhound and an Irish coursing bitch Sired by Mafi Magic.

She was quite small for a coursing bitch, only 56 lb.

Id have had a pup, but sadly she didn't take.

    Cheers.

56lb is certainly very small for an Irish bitch.

It’s a worthwhile project to try set a better type of working British deerhound imo ?

As said for me the size needs to come down a little and adding good Wheaton x Greys

Beddy x Greys and pure Greyhound blood into good deerhound bitches wouldn’t do the breed any harm going forward ?

My own deer/grey bitch is quite big at 29 inches but that suits me as she moves well and can catch stuff fairly efficiently on the varying types of ground I run on. I wouldn't want any bigger though.

A good pal runs a first x bitch I believe out of doxhopes last litter. She’s a good steady,  bitch and can do the dance

Can't remember when Bill's last litter was but I think they'd be a bit elderly by now.

Chartpolski would know. His bitch is doxhope bred.

  11. Love these theoretical red deer threads. Especially on a Sunday afternoon, which is a time for drinking here in rural ireland.

That doesn't mean I don't believe it can be done but the threads are great entertainment for a semi alcoholic idiot like me.

Looks like their security certificate has lapsed. If you click on "advanced" instead of "return to safety" you can choose to go there anyway.

Mine have had every bit of every farm animal in it’s bowl and some point and the only thing they both wouldn’t touch is duck. The thing that surprised me was how much they liked raw beef wind pipe.its just boney gristle.

Think they like to chew stuff sometimes. Do they like that 2 inch wide white Tendon type stuff? Mine love that.

Cheers d there eat a bit but not keen on if you offer a big chunk of lung in there bowl but makes sense mincing them up might need to buy a mincer I do get the odd end of life breeding ewe from time to time that’s died I butcher them for my dogs rather than the owner paying the hunt to collect them might just save the lungs up an mince them if I have a old mutton ewe this year if not I’ll mince them with whole rabbit

Make haggis from them Poxon. Millions of Scots can't be wrong............

    Morning folks.

I've spent the past 2 days patiently waiting my copy of Running Dog Maintenance by Penny Taylor, to turn up, but the posty is killing me!

I'm sure I could wait the couple of days more, but I'm interested in the group consensus as to what you guys feed your running dogs..

I've got a little 14 week old whippet x lurcher bitch who I've been feeding on puppy kibble as her teeth come through and she grows, but I'd like to transition her to a raw food diet as I certainly wouldnt eat kibble, and I dont see why she should have too either.

I know the book I'm waiting on is packed full of dietary info, but in your experience, what raw food diets work well with puppies?

    TIA

Try your local Lidl for some cheap raw. Over here (Ireland) they have a box in the freezer where they put short date stuff at a reduced price. Set yourself a top price (like £1 a kilo) and buy everything that's cheaper. Add it up in your head because sometimes they shove it through the till carelessly and the full price sticker can get read instead of the reduced one.

I often get whole chickens for 2 euro but rightly or wrongly, I cook those in a pressure cooker and take the meat of as I don't trust the tiny thin ribs and the like. All else I feed raw and I add some "Gain puppy and sapling" as it's cheap at 30euro a bag and contains meat as it's first ingredient.

Best of luck mate, that's a nice looking pup.
