  1. umm the videos i bothered to watch seemed to involve alot if sticks and running about, not my idea of ratting. sticks in the wrong hands can ruin perfectly good terriers. a good terriers should dispatch a rat with ease, and without little movement from the owner, not if your intrested in the actual hunting side. fair enough there getting out and doing it,just not, my idea of hunting. cheers wink

    fight fans

aint laughed so much in ages.
  3. i have to agree, i only go on the terrier bit really but i have noticed a recent influce of stupid f*****g questions, normally answred by someone who has just started a topic asking another stupid f*****g question!!
  4. have to say all my dogs work to fox and give everything theyve got in there own little way, or i dont have them, but i also lend lend them to a local lad as atleast 2 of them have a reputaion for being superb ratters, and all of them would do the job on rats, far better than your average ratter would do the job on old reynard.
  5. 9 years old. self retirement. had more foxes in a year throughout its life then most would see in a life time.
  6. ha ha shant even comment on that last bit!!
  7. honestly because i have now twice found 2 half dead foxes in snares, i just dont think its a fair method or really needed.it is not an instant or imo plesant death and i think show little respect for the quarry(just my opiion) im not going to get into a debate about methods, just i think there are better methods, by dog or gun, or both.
  8. not being funny mate, but i hope not!! and no i dont need a lets all stick togethr all methods lecture, i just dont like the things, far better ways of controling foxes imho.
  9. i know some lads on that job over here at the mo, they did 84 in about 3 square miles 2 years ago, now diffrent area, but just, trapping and vaccinating, releasing, then recatching and testing to see if its worked, f*****g crazy stuff!!
  10. full time terrierman. good to see what everyone does
  11. nice light look shovel mate, is that a home made job? cheers wink
  12. i know mate im just messing about, didnt mean to deveate from your point, beacase it was a good one to be honest as you know, i will post pics on other sites but not here, good pics that really the genuine lads on here are perhaps missing out on, but i have to say there are alot of people on here that are real messers and not even worth bothering with. cheers wink
  13. what do you know, you turned down a day with the wink to go to "work", like thats important, the f*****g cheek of it!! whats wrong with my mice hounds!?!?! i dont condone anything but mice hunting(its illegal to the core), you need some good dogs for that, i think a few on here might even breed them. look folks i really dont think it matters what you work them on but imho a working terrier is one that atleast would do the job below ground, i love a bit of ratting as much as the next man, but wouldnt keep a dog just for that (my prefrence). the root of a working terrier is earth work
  14. oneredtrim, again i dont know enough about the aridale breed, due to the fact that they arent real earth dogs, i have spoken to people who do work them to ground on sutibel quarry, like coyote, i suspect that again a breed has been adaopted to use because of its roots as a hunting earth dog, and its skill at it. i have to say they very few people would think of an airdale, wheaten or kerry blue if the words working terriers were mentioned, there are exeptions to every rule, i do think that at some point they would have been a sutible size to work quarry to ground tho.
  15. i dont know in short, the same as the irish and kerry blue, i can only assume that at some point these were sizable enough to get to ground on quarry, it hasent taken long for the fox terrier to become too big through poor breeding. the defontion of terrier comes from terra meaning earth and chein meaning dog,so "earth dog" if they werent earth dogs there would be no need for any of them to be shaped as they are or have the temprement they do. i have worked borders by the way, and have to say only ever got on with one particualr one. but thats not the point its a wider topic of bre
  16. dont think anyone was actually knocking borders, more the fact that these are not actuallyt really working. as i have said terriers are made to go to ground and work, thats what makes them terriers, breeding off stuff that dosent is only going to ruin a line. the reason they are good at bushing is because of there roots as earth dogs, so use them for bushing, just get one from real working lines, and keep terrier lines that are still able to do the job they are made for.
  17. i know a spot on bloke who helps me out alot in the summer whos looking fo just the same thing, shame your so far away mate, good luck tho.
  18. WHEN I GO OUT FOR A WHOLE DAY YOU WOULD BOLT ONE RABBIT IF THAT, UNLIKE RATS THEY NORMALY FACE THE FUMES THE ODD ONE THAT BOLTS/FLOPS OUT YOU CAN ALWAYS PICK IT YOU WITH YOUR HAND AS ITS OVER COME WITH THE FUMES i ment wether you had ever bolted a fox out of a warreen with it mate?
  19. have you never bolted one from a big rabbit warren with it then? foxes are funny creatures and smoke is a funny tool, i have done my fair share of ratting and i have come to the conclusion that alot rats do die underground without even trying to bolt(not a nice death i wouldnt of thought), i have also done a good share of foxing with terriers, and you will find alot of foxes are sulky animals when to ground, i would only imagen that smoke would make it worse. imho opion just like when worked with dogs, some foxes will bolt, some wont. i wouldnt like to think of using smoke to a fox th
  20. russel dog missing large black and white one, rough coated. lost by the whiteway near cirencester, think it may of been picked up. totoo green, RX0532
  21. perhaps you should look up what the word terrier means. if a terrier does not work to ground then imho its is no more than a dog simple, any thing can chase around on top!! just due to the terriers working roots it makes them better at it, but that could soon disaper with poor breeding decisions. still good luck with your pups and quest for knowledge mate. wink
  22. i would never say that ratting and rabbiting is not good fun, and each to the own sport the bit i have real trouble is is breeding from dogs that are not tested then charging silly money. terriers are the size and shape they are for a reaosn and generally have the temprement they do for a reason, so lets remeber that and breed them for that. a dog that is bread proven digger to digger will 9/10 be a perfectly good ratting and rabbiting dog, (and you are also keeping a true line of what the dogs bread for, just dont breed form it if you aint testing it and are just using it for bu
  23. i would have to agree with you Mr Mole but if that had been truely sighned, phewwwwwwwww youd be alot richer than you are now! good book for anyones collection tho. i once heard a well known huntsman say, its like his bible, and wouldnt go anywhere without it, he is a prat tho!!
