These deer must've been partially blind
matt_hooks replied to Powell93's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
If it were spring time I'd ask if they were on a rape field, but it does sound like they've only got one thing on their mind at the moment! -
For pigeon, I prefer to take a chest shot to a head shot. A pellet slipped in under the wing will almost certainly hit something vital, whereas a head shot you risk hitting several areas that will wound without killing outright. Hit the beak, and the bird can't feed and so will starve to death slowly. A little low and hit the crop, the bird will be in massive pain, and will die slowly from infection, or starve to death because they can't feed. The head is difficult to hit, as it moves around so quickly. Between the time you decide to take the shot, and the time the pellet reaches the bird, it

I must admit i thought the same Andy ........ Yeah, the scope rails a type that's not been used since the 70's and I can just about make out the groves in the stock, I think. It's way too old to be a Super Sport. Hmmm, you could be right there. Definitely not the Cadet, that has a very shallow slope to the rear of the action, whereas this one has a vertical back. Meteor is favourite. There's one on Gunstar that has that same twin grooved stock. BSA Meteor

What you have is a very bad case of rust pitting. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about the actual surface damage, apart from maybe rubbing down with a VERY FINE wet and dry (somewhere around 6000 grit, and wet) to even it out a bit. You should never paint the metalwork on the gun. You can buy chemicals, called cold bluing, that will restore the colour on the bits you have to rub down. Make sure that you prepare the metalwork properly before you try to blue it. Time spent in preparation is rarely wasted, and the better you prepare the metal the better the result will be. You bas

If you want to spend some money making the rifle better, have a chat with a good gunsmith (A&M on here have a good reputation) and get the thing tuned. The thumbhole stock looks pretty good as is, I wouldn't mess about with the stock or furniture, concentrate on the shooting!

Great rifle, accurate as you like and great to shoot. The rifle is still in production, so parts aren't a problem. There's a load of info on the Weirauch website. Weirauch A PDF of the manual HERE

I'm fairly sure that what you have there is an old BSA Supersport (could be wrong, Phantom will be along in a sec and will tell you for sure). Judging by the state of the outside (don't use wire wool, it scratches the finish, use screwed up aluminium foil and WD40 to get rid of the rust) I'd suggest that the seals inside will need changing, and probably the spring too. The stocks are normally varnished, which makes repairing dings, dents and scratches more difficult. For pellets, I wouldn't worry about that yet until you are sure the innards are working well. First thing would be to get so

Welcome to the forum mate. Trundle along to the airgun section, introduce yourself there, everyone will be pleased to give you far more advice than you know what to do with!

There was one at the paddocks the other night, sat next to the first one that I shot. It was a few metres further away and I was hoping it'd hang around after I'd shot the first one, but no chance!
-
That's it, get the priorities right! Probably better getting a bottle, it's far easier!
-
Gary, I hope the guns are all locked up, or you could be in trouble! Got a good voice there Shannon, need to persuade your dad to buy you a decent microphone now!
-
Nah, he said he wanted a full power outfit! I have a gas ram lightning too, the classic version, and I quite like it, though some people denigrate it! There are some damn good second hand springers out there, far better guns than what you'd get for that money brand new!

Awww thanks guys, was fun writing it up! i couldn't POSSIBLY comment!

FAC Shotguns "should" be granted as an open condition on your FAC, I say should as the Home Office advises FLO's to do this to save them clearing land for shotguns but it's not always the case. I was thinking about that earlier on, as I don't remember anyone ever saying they had to get land checked for their section 1 shotguns, clears that up!

I'd definitely save up for a PCP. The springers are great fun, but a PCP makes things so much easier. I used an S410 last night, and my first shot bowled over a rabbit cleanly at 35 yards, such an instinctive piece of kit to use!

Christo, I'm going to type two words that almost certainly explain why you missed so many. Range estimation. Work on estimating how far away the target is. Your point of aim is different at each distance. What calibre rifle do you have? If it's a serious trouble, then invest in a laser range finder. If you get a picture of a rabbit, life size, and then look at it through the scope at various ranges. Note how big it looks at each range. Obviously different sized bunnies might confuse things, but it'll give you a good idea!

Welll Tony. Actually I'm hiding in the bushes outside, stealing your wireless as I type! If you want to see badgers by the hundred, and foxes, and buzzards, and red kites, in fact most of the predatory species in the UK, then come down this way! I love foxes and badgers, but when they are in the numbers that they are round here they become a real pest, and badgers, being the disease vectors that they can be when in large numbers, really need controlling. I've seen some that were white and grey/brown. Never seen a ginger one though! I wonder if it's a form of albinoism?
-
Oops, sorry, that's a habit from shooting deer! Definitely need to practice night time range estimation. It's not so important with the rimmy. And I have one of your pellets too, that came out of one of the bunnies. I like to see "used" pellets, it gives you an idea of how the energy is transferring. I'll try and get a pic of it to put up, as it's quite interesting! I'm drinking a bottle of the cider now. It's a wee bit sweeter than I'd normally drink, which just makes it all the more dangerous as it doesn't taste alcoholic, though the hygrometer is telling me somewhere around 9%

My understanding is no, as there is no condition on a SGC relating to where it can be used. I guess if it's a section 1, held on an FAC, then it's different, but on an SGC I don't think it does.

If the working parts look like that then yes, it's the Camargue. The Tasco AG are specifically designed for airguns. It's certainly good enough for most things you'll want to do with the airgun.
-
Aye, Davey's a legend! I am saving for a new gun, unfortunately not an air rifle though. I'm saving up to fill the .243 slot on my ticket!
-
Tony, thanks fella, it was a superb night out! Chaz, I wouldn't dare give away the location, Davey has guns, and a massive Rottweiler!
-
Like this but with a short barrel?
-
Ah the bunnies positively LOVE the rain Tony! It was persisting down all last night, and just look at the results!
-
Nope Tony, I'm doing the write up this time. Davey is off enjoying the rugby 9and maybe some throat lubrication!) Imagine the scene. It's a saturday night, and a couple of blokes are heading out for a night out. Are they headed to the pub to get s##tfaced? Nope! Are they going to stand around in fields all night chasing bunny rabbits? Ohhhh yes! It all started at a house in Wiltshire. A little later than expected (the queue at the gunshop was incredible!) but it started there nonetheless. The jeep was loaded with the necessary supplies. Guns, ammunition, coffee (I'd heard about Dav
