Cracking dog mate My old lurcher was of the same stock and looked very similar to yours, the same height as well. Best dog I've ever had. Is yours from a grew put to a saluki (1/4 grey 1/4 whippet 1/2 saluki)? Just asking because I'm looking to get one the same in a few months and want to get the breeding just right.

I was running a Saluki cross until a month back, miss him so much Just bringing a Whippet on at the moment but getting another Saluki cross in the near future. -

i would have thourght that the bullx was tryed and tested by now. I guess they are mate. I still look on the collie x as the 'traditional' lurcher though for some reason. -

I went for saluki x as I'm biased I knew the bull x was popular but never thought it'd be neck and neck with the tried and tested collie in the voting. -
I loved mine, he was the best dog I've ever owned. They can be hard work to train and recall can be tough but that's half the fun with the cross He was very quick and never seemed to tire. I think some people don't like the crossing for the reasons above as they can be very headstrong but I'd certainly have another.

Thanks for the advice on exercise lads. I've been giving him about 30 mins pavement walking to toughen up his pads in the morning then a good run every night in the fields at work for the last week or so and he's eating as much food as he wants (which is a lot, greedy sod heh). Will see how he goes with this routine for the next few months.

I agree, you can find some great dogs in rescue places. Quite often stolen ones that don't get sold end up being run almost to death then if lucky wind up in a rescue centre to recover before going up for adoption. You get quite a few dogs that were genuinely lost when out hunting whos owners never managed to find them as well.

would like to see a pic of your pup what height were the parents???....not sure about exercise hopefully somebody on here will know... Here's some recent ones from a few days back mate. His dad was 22" TTS, not certain on the mum but I think she was around 18" TTS. A few mates that have seen him reckon that he'll be a tall lad but I have no idea how he'll turn out.

Great thread with some lovely dogs. These are hands down my favourite purebred sighthounds, not sure how I ended up with this Whippet pup really My last dog was a Whippet/Saluki cross and it seems most of his best characteristics were from his Saluki blood rather than the Whippet. I liked the stubborness personally and his loyalty was second to none. I'll definitely own another Saluki cross or pure Saluki at some stage.

Good post Mr Jones and an interesting thread. My Whippet's just over 4 months and is 18" TTS, he's grown an inch since last month but I hadn't bothered measuring him before that. Does anyone know how if exercise affects a dog's growth much? I keep getting told different things like he shouldn't run too far as it'll stunt his growth and other people say the opposite, that he needs a good run to keep his bones strong and healthy.

I kept terriers my whole life until I decided to go for a sighthound in the 90s. I went round all the local rescue places then found the dog in my avatar at the last one left to try. He'd been dumped by travelers in Rugby town centre and was hands down the best dog I ever had. From the second I got him I became lurcher mad and have made some great mates over the years meeting lurchermen out and about with my hound. I grew up in the country so would always disappear for hours with my terriers but it's much more fun having a sighthound with you IMO. I'm lucky enough to have a job where I can

my whippet pup on his 3rd rabbit what you think ?
vanquo replied to kirk224's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Great dog mate, thanks for the vid. I hope my Whippet is up to his standard at 8 months, got recall spot on at 4 months around other dogs/people but who knows what'll happen when he spots something more interesting and picks it up -
I'd always go to a vet for this provided you can find a decent one that won't charge a fortune. Seen some right ballsups with people doing DIY declawing in the past. My old lurcher had 3 inch scars running up both lower front legs, I presume the guy that had him before me tore them out with pliers

I'd echo what's been said above about the length of the dog being very important. My old lurcher was 24" TTS but much longer in the body than friend's hounds that were taller than him, he was the fastest dog I've owned by a country mile as well. He didn't have the acceleration of a Whippet but was so much faster than one flat out he made up for it within a few seconds.

I agree with the posts above, can cause no end of problems leaving them on as they get caught in everything. Have even seen dogs manage to get them caught in their collars before, fun and games sorting that one out if it's not a good natured dog!

I have a Whippet pup at the moment that does this, I think it's just growing pains as they grow so fast at that age. Speaking of dreams, my old lurcher would wake up the entire house most nights. Running full pelt in his sleep barking with his mouth shut. Still used to scare me to death waking up to that noise at 3am even after 12 years

Thanks for the photos wrowmon, lovely looking dogs there mate. Will be interesting to see how these hounds progress - keep us updated

Working lurchers PETS or TOOLS of your trade??
vanquo replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My dog's always a companion that goes everywhere with me, lives in the house, comes to work with me, eats with me. Wouldn't have it any other way -
The lurcher of mine that died month back (pic in avatar) was mostly Saluki/Whippet but I'm sure he had a bit of Doberman in him too. Best dog I've had, loyal to the death, brave and really obedient. Still miss him terribly. I don't think he had more than a quarter doberman blood in him though but for what it's worth Dobermans have Greyhound blood in their breeding so if the mum's lean they could well make good dogs. Sorry I can't be more help than that, hopefully someone with a first cross will have some more advice for you. If you do take the plunge I'd love to see pics of the pup as he/s

Great pics everyone, I love these little lurchers. Currently got a Whippet pup and if he works out well I'll prob get him to sire a litter in a few years. In two minds whether to put him to a Beddy or Saluki though, love the look of the Bed x Whippet but I have experience with Saluki x Whippets and love them too. More photos please

Just turned 4 months old and he's 18" TTS, hoping he'll be a big lad like his dad.
