  5. i run my dog every night i can in the season, practice makes perfect the more your out the better the dog will get as long as its bred right. you'll know when your dog has had to much it wont be so intrested in going ie not so keen so give it a night off or 2 and then try again.
  6. how much do you want to find out? if you are keen on having some racing pigeons, you would be best off finding someone in your area who keeps them and going to ask them. if you don't know anyone just keep yours eyes on the sky till you see some flying round, watch where they drop in to then just go and knock on the door and speak to the fella there who keeps them. i'm sure they'll be more than pleased to show you round there loft and answer any questions you have. i know because if anyone came to my dads place and asked about pigeons they'd struggle to get away. hope this helps cheers pp
  7. how old is your dog? if its only young then just persevre with always lamping it off a slip lead, after a while the dog will realise it only gets to catch when the light is on and is let of the slip so if it misses it wont bother hunting up it will just come straight back ready for the next rabbit. if its an older dog and theres lots of rabbits out then just keep lamping it and lamping it till all the rabbits are gone and the dog is f****d then it'll come back for a rest and will have hopefully learned a bit of sense and always come straight back after every run.
  8. i think you need a good mix of both for an alround dog ie catch what ever you put the light on and anything you see daytime. my bitch is good on rabbits can pick them up on the straight or out of a squat but a hare she has to run to death because she can turn and turn them but just dont have that extra boost to pick them up. so she's got the skill just lacks a little speed. very frustating to watch!
  9. nice one rew, i love it when they manage to catch them with out the light! my bitch quite often does it in the moonlight when just out for a walk, always a bonus to come home with an unexpected rabbit. bit of a coincidence but my bitch is called fly too! wierd. good luck for tonight pp
  10. nice one! had a touch of cabin fever meself yesterday, only stopped raining here for about 5 mins then changed to snow!! took the light but nothing was about. glad some one managed to have some fun!
  11. hi all, never fed fly last night as the rabbit i'd taken out for her hadnt barely defrosted so thought i'd wait til this morning and give it to her then..... went in to her kennel this morning to feed her to find a scattering of black feathers and fly munching quite happily on a rook! god knows where she got it from she must have caught it when it dropped into the garden to eat some left over chicken corn from when i moved the run last. bloody dog amazes me its like she dont need me any more i dont no wether to be pleased or upset!! pp
  12. i have to say rabbit as its the one i've killed the most of! only really started to hunt other stuff in the past couple of years since i got a dog of my own and although i love doing it all, theres still nothing like waiting for a rabbit to bolt when u first put a ferret in a bury or watching your dog run wide of the beam and suddenly dart back in and pick up a squatter or pick 1 up at full speed just before it gets back to the hedge!!!! its made me go all dreamy eyed just writting about it:notworthy:
  13. took fly out for a shine last night, weather was perfect plenty of rabbits out. 1st field 2 runs 2 rabbits 1 of those was a sitter, 2nd field had a strip of cover crop had 2 more outta there with the aid of me terrier flushing them out for me to lamp. 3rd and 4th fields rabbits sat well out in stubble struggled to see them when they sat real tight picked up 2 on the run coming down hill at me and 1 sitter, starting to struggle to carry them now especially with the terrier on the lead aswell. had a couple more runs on the way back home real unlucky with the way they ran either away from me or s
  14. i know a lad with a 3/4 cross but i'm not to sure how much he works it, bit of a bullshitter and me dad knows a guy who trains greyhounds but i dont think they'd be to keen to let me line my bitch, this is why i was swayed to these other dogs the small 1 especially as i've seen him and his brother work. cheers pp
  15. hi all, am thinking about having a litter of pups out of my lurcher in the summer and just have some probably stupid questions about it. i have a collie greyhound 1st cross bitch 25'' tts she is 3 yr old and is good on all quarry except hares, just lacks enough speed to pick them up on the turn and has to run them into the ground if they dont get through a fence or hedge. the pups i want to breed are not for the money i want to start a line and improve them if poss ie wont a bit more pace but hopefully not lose to much brain. i have the option of using 2 different stud dogs. 1 is a 22'' t
  16. looks like the perfect night to me. wish i could find some ground with a decent number on near me. nice looking dog pretty much the same as my merle bitch, how tall is she? pp
  17. how many ferrets do you need? if you can manage with just 1 kill the biter before he really hurts you and just get a young one in the summer. nothing worse than a biting ferret to spoil your days ferreting.
  18. only ever had trouble with my bitch once when she was run with another dog(bitch) but that was when the other dog tried to get at the deer when she had hold of it. the problem i get most though is that she doesnt retrieve to hand with another dog around she will come about 15yrds away then i have to go to her even though the other dog is on a slip with me mate.
  19. just finding some ground with a hundred rabbits on it to catch would be a challenge near me! it would take an amazing dog and a ruthless man to stay out and take that many in the 1 night. would love to get into high teens let alone 70 or or even 100!!!!
  20. thats good , a nice number to catch in a night just trying to build my bitch up to the same sort of numbers. how old is she?and how much collie she got in her?
