  1. Because they just look at some single loci. That’s just not enough. And proto-dogs probably already migrated with us all over the world so it is hardly surprising to find scandinavian wolf genes in Dingos.
  2. I don’t buy that. ince all dogs have a common wolf ancestor and since the dingo probably once was at least a proto-dog the observation of scandinavian wolf genes is rather uninteresting. All in all I do not like the study design of the linked paper.
  3. I think this is not so easy. For proper testing we would need Dingo genetic material from pre-european colonialisation to have „pure“ dingo genes to compare against. Your own post further down shows dingo hybridisationen with dogs is a huge „problem“ and is so for probably quite some time, which means there is no genetic gold sample. See also: doi:10.1111/j.1365-2907.2006.00086.x Then you have the problem of reference groups and that dingo influence for most Kelpies happened multiple generations ago which does not make it easier to proof. I would not trust any genetic study at the m
  4. He even went so far as to do genetic tests that in his opinion proofed the Dingo influence. In my opinion this is this is inconclusive since it is extremely hard to proof the influence from a genetic point of view. There is apparently a stigma regarding Dingos so at least in the past it was a big no no to say that you use Dingo crosses for stock work or even have them around.
  5. It is a good read and Bill Robertson is clearly putting in the work. I also liked his documentary, although I have to say I like the book more since it gives way more depth.
  6. That’s my sport with my little lurcher. Super fun! Better than any eMTB. The dog in the video runs a bit odd, but seems to have fun…
  7. Sorry for hijacking this thread, but I think I have seen your collies on the ACD Thread from a couple weeks ago and wonder what type of collie they are? I am reading a book on the history of the Kelpie breed and there are a lot of collie strains mentioned, that are probably not around anymore? ORIGINS OF THE AUSTRALIAN KELPIE | kelpiehistory WWW.KELPIEHISTORY.COM From the north of Scotland to the outback of Australia and everywhere in between, wherever contributions to the evolution of the Kelpie breed occurred, Bill and...
  8. Nice looking bitch! Are you considering to breed here? If yes what type of cross would you fancy?
  9. That is true, but people from said countries maybe do not want to go on a public forum and incriminate themselves... ? I stay often in rural poland and you can get away with a lot of stuff and the wildlife is abundant. Roe, Hare, Boar, Rabbits, you name it. I myself am a little bit hesitant to run my dog (whippet cross) there because right by our property lives a wolf pack, which has around 15 members. In the countries you mentioned wolfs should be a given, too. Are the people not afraid for their dogs? You hear some real horror stories over there, wolfs having fun killing hunting
  10. Where in europe would that be? Spain? In a lot of countries over here hunting with dogs is banned almost completely.
  11. Looks like a fine dog! I wonder why you do not see more sal/grey x collie/kelpie/acd crosses. Maybe @SheepChaser is on to something when he says they are mental.
  12. I recon by that you do not mean the good kind of mental/weirdo ?
  13. What do you mean by that? Genuine question. Totally mental? Uncontrollable? Never had a any of the breeds...
  14. Nice topic. I really fancy these aussy herding dog crosses. Anyone ever heard or seen a sal/grey x kelpie? or even a sal x kelpie? I recon they would be able to work day and night...
  15. Do yourself a favor and get the dog and food aggression of your Akita in order before you get a pup/adolescent. I sometimes help a dog trainer with clients that have dogs that are aggressive with other dogs, because mine is properly socialized and functions as a mentor dog. This process can take years! And sometimes you have to admit that you will not get a bombproof dog. Do not train on the life object… Even if you strictly separate them, one time you miss to lock the doors or whatever and then what?
  16. I see. This is a random video of the sport I am talking about. It is super fun! And a great outlet for the dog. If you decide to get the proper gear I use the stuff from them: This is the harness I use: Best dog pulling harness | Freemotion Harness WWW.NONSTOPDOGWEAR.COM And that is the leash: Elastic dog line | Bungee leash WWW.NONSTOPDOGWEAR.COM
  17. Do you let him pull you with his collar or do you have a proper pulling harness? I do bikejöring with my whippet lurcher and she really excels at it and it keeps her fit as a fiddle year round. If you are not using a proper sled dog harness I can really recommend to use them. Safer for the dog. Also an elastic rope keeps the load on the bones lower.
  18. what are they like if they are crossed with a collie type? Easier to manage?
  19. From the dams side the puppys get their mitochondrial DNA so it makes sense that a dam can have more influence on the quality of the resulting puppys.
  20. In wild/street dogs the female often has to fend for herself. This is actually quite different between dogs and wolfs. But whatever I am just hypothesizing…
  21. Not only in cats, it is somewhat of a rule of thumb that female carnivores hunt more and are more successful at it. They kinda have to, since they are mostly the ones who have to feed the cubs/puppys etc. The males just shag and do as they please. ? So maybe it is a hormonal thing in bitches? More drive?
  22. how old do the tight coursing bred dogs get, on average? I have read on here that they can be injury prone, do they sometimes have shortened lifespans?
  23. What’s in them? I suppose they are coursing bred?
  24. In my opinion there is nothing inherently wrong with it. But it is just way to easy to do it wrong, from a timing and intensity perspective. So for me it is just not worth it. Verbal and physical presence is enough for me. Besides most mother dogs stop their puppies by growling (verbal, "stop it you little wanker") or physical presence (pushing between two puppies that go at each other to fiercely). Clipping them is reserved for later times when they are older, and even then only seldom. Not at 10 weeks. To each their own.
