  1. They owned the place they lived mate and it was picture postcard, as you know it’s a wonderful spot there in Devon. That picture don’t do the house justice, it was amazing. Had to sell the land and that’s when they came here.....they have a tidy little business selling home grown veg, jam, chutney and eggs. Also selling baskets and doing courses in how to do it. I supply them with a few eggs when they don’t have enough and swap for a box of veg, jam, goats milk fudge etc Exactly how life should be mate ?
  2. Not the same as weapons but we are friends with a local couple and she is brilliant at loads of traditional skills. She weaves the most amazing baskets and has just made me a sheep skin rug out of some black and white fleece from one of my sheep.....all done as it would have been done all those years ago. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-england-devon-43546956 This is them, lovely couple and another of the type NOT wanted in England.....she is part of our growing community of refugees ! Lol
  3. Now lads, are we talking about the black Viking’s or the White Vikings ?
  4. 4 months and between 2 and 5 grand fines for knocking a pig but you can throw statues in Bristol docks with absolutely no come back......amazing !
  5. It varies mate, but pretty expensive yes.
  6. Have not got a clue mate, the last two I killed I probably came home with maybe 200kg of pork ?.....maybe more I’m hoping the cattle yield about 180kg of beef.
  7. Dead ! Lol ? All the pork is in the freezer now mate
  8. They are actually from an old pedigree Angus herd specially imported to Australia from Scotland. Because of the weather out there they wanted to try and breed an animal that did well just on forage, calved easily and also produced a decent amount of beef. They established 3 groups at the research centre out there, Top line, middle line and Low Line and the low line out performed the others over the 30 years they ran the experiment. They are about 60% the size of “standard” cattle but don’t carry the dwarfism gene like small dexter. Anyway, 30 years and they shut the experim
  9. Yes mate.....you must be one of the few people in Ireland who know that.
  10. I’m just eating an old Tex that I have had for 5 years, she just hung around as a pet really but she went lame and had a skin growth between her back hoof that was red raw all the time, treated it but it never got better and I wasn’t about to start cutting it off so off she went and I have to say she tastes great ?
  11. A pretty nice picture from this week for those who like that sort of thing
  12. This mornings free for all for the breakfast oats ! Lol
  13. I have just been buying the tubs but I have just the last few days sourced 25kg sacks at very sensible money so I’ll get them from now on
  14. Maybe mate however I researched the cattle I keep quiet a lot and settled on these because they seem ideal for small holders and the way I want to raise them. They also kill out at about 60% so they tick all my boxes.
  15. I reckon mine will take best part of a year mate, certainly nothing less than about 8 months
  16. I’d say most people who care about this stuff do what they can where they can mate, I’m no different. I top up my cows and sheep with a small bit of rolled oats mixed with cow crunch. I know that don’t come from round the corner and I know it’s probably not organic but I have to be realistic about just how far my grass will go to keeping my animals in top condition. It also helps me get seaweed, garlic and other herbs into their diet so that I don’t have to keep worming things. Id say I use a bag of each a week maybe, but there are many farmers who are using a lorry load a
  17. I was looking for them at one point to breed some but they are not actually that big and more tradition breeds over here I decided made more sense (and less hassle to source !) At the moment I am bringing on Brhamas and Buff Orpington for eating birds
  18. Something I have thought about mate because I use all those type of products but I need to do more research as I’m not so sure the climate would lend itself to that sort of thing......it’s warm and damp here ALL the time.
  19. Maybe mate, I know my wife would but I don’t really think about it.....criminal really
  20. It’s great isn’t it mate, I have 7 acres of mixed natural woodland and scrubby grass/bog ground and I have just left it and allowed it to re-wild. It has a badger set and numerous other bits and bobs, I just leave it alone.
  21. Not in this lifetime ! Lol ?
  22. At this precise minute mate, my plans extend as far as this bacon ! Lol ?
  23. Send me your address, I’m on my way !
