I’m just eating an old Tex that I have had for 5 years, she just hung around as a pet really but she went lame and had a skin growth between her back hoof that was red raw all the time, treated it but it never got better and I wasn’t about to start cutting it off so off she went and I have to say she tastes great ?

A pretty nice picture from this week for those who like that sort of thing
-
This mornings free for all for the breakfast oats ! Lol

I have just been buying the tubs but I have just the last few days sourced 25kg sacks at very sensible money so I’ll get them from now on

Maybe mate however I researched the cattle I keep quiet a lot and settled on these because they seem ideal for small holders and the way I want to raise them. They also kill out at about 60% so they tick all my boxes.

I reckon mine will take best part of a year mate, certainly nothing less than about 8 months

I’d say most people who care about this stuff do what they can where they can mate, I’m no different. I top up my cows and sheep with a small bit of rolled oats mixed with cow crunch. I know that don’t come from round the corner and I know it’s probably not organic but I have to be realistic about just how far my grass will go to keeping my animals in top condition. It also helps me get seaweed, garlic and other herbs into their diet so that I don’t have to keep worming things. Id say I use a bag of each a week maybe, but there are many farmers who are using a lorry load a

I was looking for them at one point to breed some but they are not actually that big and more tradition breeds over here I decided made more sense (and less hassle to source !) At the moment I am bringing on Brhamas and Buff Orpington for eating birds

Something I have thought about mate because I use all those type of products but I need to do more research as I’m not so sure the climate would lend itself to that sort of thing......it’s warm and damp here ALL the time.
-
Maybe mate, I know my wife would but I don’t really think about it.....criminal really

It’s great isn’t it mate, I have 7 acres of mixed natural woodland and scrubby grass/bog ground and I have just left it and allowed it to re-wild. It has a badger set and numerous other bits and bobs, I just leave it alone.

Not in this lifetime ! Lol ?

At this precise minute mate, my plans extend as far as this bacon ! Lol ?

Send me your address, I’m on my way !

Well lads, what is positive is that a load of hairy arsed hunting types from all corners of the country seem to care and think about where their food comes from and the wider picture. Despite what anyone may think I like to think well of people and I genuinely believe lads like the ones replying to this odd little thread of mine are doing the best they can in their own little ways.......lots of small things add up to a big thing so to speak. I think there are enough people in the world who think the same and a few of them would be willing to pay for a product that fits in with that.

Mate, that is fantastic to read and I think Farmers get bad press, When I talk about these things I’m NEVER having a go at the farmer, it’s the system that’s shite. I think what you are doing is the future and I think a lot of farmers with their finger on the pulse know that too.....as you say, I genuinely believe they feel a connection to their land and the nature within it, 100% with that ? I think you know well the type of practices I’m talking about and they have been going on for too long, but we are seeing change and that’s a good thing......in most cases that change is being d

Couldn’t produce that off my own place mate. Theres a few lads at it mind you and I think there should be a lot more, maybe people see that product as bit “niche” ?
-
Fair play mate, however I think it’s easy to forget that we don’t pay the real price of food at point of sale do we. £16 for a chicken is probably the totally correct price, but we pay £4 at point of sale and subsidise the rest out of tax and treating the animals like shit whilst killing the planet we live on. Theres no such thing as “cheap” food imho, just smoke and mirrors ?
-
Wow, where do I start with that. Well first off, I’m not slagging proper commercial farmers at all mate, they are working within a system and have to comply with the rules in that system and do the things that the system tells them to do to make money. Let’s start with soil because frankly the soil is the lifeblood of every plant and animal. The system relies on inputs to sustain mono cultures of grass & crops (not always but as a rule).....This involves firstly ploughing which releases carbon sequestered in the soil and destroys soil structure. You then plant a Sin

Fair point that mate, however I think we all know that when it comes to intensely reared products there’s a price you pay on top of the price you pay if you get my drift. So it’s a conscious choice on the part of the consumer and I don’t think I would worry to much about that. Some people will make that choice and some won’t, of course you want to be competitive but I have never been interested in a race to the bottom either in my previous life in business....you have to value yourself and what you do and set a bar. But I do hear you and it’s a shame that decent food isn’t more

How are they cracking on mate ?
-
You must be a mind reader mate, exactly that. Just do something I like and maybe make a few quid along the way, it will only be piss about money but that’s not the whole point of the exercise either.
-
Mate I have explored the process, in reality it’s not too bad but certain things can cause you hassle. My biggest hassle and a big problem over here is sourcing feed. I don’t have enough ground to cut enough of my own fodder, so I would have to buy in and you just can’t get organic silage or hay here. The hard feed is double the price so for instance, layers pellets are €8 ordinary and €15 organic. Most of the organic feed comes from the UK and I can only see that getting more expensive after December. Im not slagging organic because the principal is sound, we do need

Ahh, but you can’t call it organic mate unless you have a certificate from an authorising organisation, it’s illegal ?
