I totally agree that the toll was terrible, those blokes got thrown into real horror and treated like shit by the country......not much changes huh ? But I think we are confusing their reasons for going from what happened after they went. I don’t even think it was a sense of adventure of any of that, I like to think it’s just because that’s just what you did as a british man. Nothing more and as boring as that and yet mighty and noble at the same time. Its that very simple thing that no longer exists in the UK and we are poorer for it imho ?

I don’t agree with that at all mate, I think that totally devalues those men and Britain. The “pals” brigades didn’t go because they had too, they went because they had an affinity and a kinship to the people round them and to the soil beneath their feet. Thats what I like to believe anyway mate ?

That looks tidy mate, if I ever did it I’d do corrugated rather than a box profile as that would fit in better with the farm buildings already here. I don’t really know what I’m looking at but it looks very nice neat work round all the ends and corners pal, nice job ?

I like it mate, it’s quick, it’s clean and you don’t have to keep painting the bloody thing ! I built myself a barn a couple of years back in timber frame and clad the whole lot in grey sheeting, all I have to do is give it a wash down once a year

Yes mate, I’m liking how they are using metal cladding more and more in buildings. I said to the wife is I ever get to rebuild the old part of my house I’d clad the whole lot in black metal.

I only employed one female but I dealt with loads and my experience is that if you come across a good one then they tend to be very, very good indeed.

Just be happy mate, if you are happy then it will be a success no matter what you do. Forgetting the money my one of my greatest satisfactions was empowering lads who most of society would right off and certainly some of the clients we worked for would have seen as “scum” to be able to achieve things they never dreamed they could do, push themselves harder than they thought they could go. A bit of that mate, it’s basically having the knowledge to complete a certain thing that is daunting to most but fairly straightforward when you know how to do it. Its shifting a lot of kit in a very labour intensive way to the most profitable and / or environmentally friendly places in the shortest amount of time, normally to fairly rigid deadlines with big cost implications. Correct mate, around £65 an hour is the going rate for what I do on a long term project where you have to be there day in, day out for like 3 months to a year or something. Most of my stuff is 1 to 4 weeks maximum , I’m sickened of the gaff after that ! Lol

I don’t do anything really anymore but I used to buy and sell things and later that also encapsulated the logistics of getting stuff in and out and relocated around the UK and Europe. I used to do very well before my kids came along but I gave up a lot of my hunger for work when they arrived. I want that money just go back and visit the world and have to deal with the endless stream of bland ordinary fuckwits now days though mate ! On the odd occasion I may do a job now days I price myself in at between £80 to £100 an hour, it’s the right money these days mate

A few years back I think it was calculated that in my old area you needed to earn £27 an hour to just get by, that’s just an ordinary ex council type semi and not too many frivolities !

As I always tell my kids, it’s easy to be ordinary, that takes no effort whatsoever. What I mean by that is, and I’m always clear about this with them too, it don’t matter if you are the street sweeper or a Neuro Surgeon do what you do well because it all has value and just striving to not be a wanker will get you places.

Unfortunately mate times change and it’s very hard to find quality people with a bit of a work ethic today imho. Its all this “everyone is entitled to a great job and £25000 a year from the get go” that has murdered things imho.....on one hand it’s nice that kids have choices rather than my generation who just wanted to get out and take whatever was in offer but in the other hand it’s done nothing for the quality within the pool of labour.
