  1. artic Nice bag mate I also have a Theoben Rapid 7 that has served me well for many years. I was just wondering though , now i have a rim license , would i need to inform the local police licensing authority if i wanted to upgrade my Rapid 7 to fac standard or will Theoben Engineering do the work after just looking at my fac , John Ps : approx how much would it cost
  2. Thanks for all your tips folks they are greatly appreciated , John
  3. Thanks for all your replys. Maybe one day i'll get a chance to shoot old charlie with my 12g , John
  4. Hi all. Since joining THL i've read that a lot of people seem to use their shotguns on foxs . I have never used a shotgun to kill a fox and am just curious how you guys get into range to do this. All the people i know that are into fox control use Centrefire rifles such as .223 , .225 , for long range shots , with the possibility of a .22 at ranges out to about 75 / 85 yards. Surely the spread of shotgun lead ( unless you are on top of old charlie ) would result in injury and slow death. Or maybe you guys use your shotguns for dispatch purposes , John
  5. Thanks for your reply wild dog I have done a bit of clay pigeon over the years with , what can i say , reasonable results. But like the majority of people on this site , i enjoy going out out with my rimmy or shotgun to do some vermin control. What i'm trying to say is , i find that trying to hit a pigeon in full flight seems completely different than hitting a clay , and i was just asking for some tips on how to improve , John
  6. Hi all As a complete newbie to pigeon shooting i was just wondering if any of you experts out there could give me a few tips. Basically , although i've hit a few i am definately missing more . Could anybody tell me ( as a rough guide as course ) that when faced with a fast flying bird accross in front of you at a distance of about 25 to 30 yards , how much lead do i need to allow ? a pigeon lengh ? more ? less ? Also any tips on birds flying directly towards you will be greatly appreciated as i missed 2 of the buggers earlier today down the farm. I think that my main prob
  7. Air Arms S200 2 years ago , just like you i got my first FAC and rimfire , a Cz Varmint .22 and i can honestly say i havn't had any problems whatsoever. Im still using the factory fitted trigger, even though quite a few people say they are too heavy. As i was on a budget i went for the cheapest silencer i could find , a Parker Hale and when used with subsonic ammo the silence is eery. As for ammo , i've tried a few different brands but am now using Winchester Super X's . As i was a Air rifle nut for many years i got into the habit of using a spirit level to avoid canting th
  8. Hi all With reference to my original posting on this topic i've just had a piece of interesting news from the FAC department of North Herts Constabulary . Basically i phoned up the FAC department this morning and was told that there definately is such a thing as an 'open ticket ' in my area , but i wouldn't be eligable for this until my FAC comes up for renewel in about 2 years time. I asked the question , what would happen if the piece of land for which the rimmy is registered was lost at the time of renewel , and was told that , having held a ticket for at least 5 years and h
  9. In my opinion you will not go wrong with a CZ .22lr. All CZ's have a large following here in the uk , and abroad , due to their overall value for money. Combine that and the low price of the 22lr bullet , enough said , John
  10. riohog You're right about section 13.10 of the home office guidelines . The following line is what interests me Farmers and landowners may allow shooters to shoot on their land, for payment or otherwise, on a formal or informal basis. Maybe a few lines from the farmer when the time comes will suffice , John
  11. Thanks for all your swift replies . Your views have really given me something to think about At the end of the day i still have 2 years left on my ticket so , who knows what will happen . And if push comes to shove RicW , you're right , i would rather join a club than loose my gun , Thanks again , John
  12. I was just wondering if there is a ' ferreting season ' The reason i'm asking is that my dad is thinking of taking up this sport again after many years of absence and he has never heard of a ' ferreting season' before , Many thanks , John
  13. Hi all I have a question regarding my rimmy and FAC so please bear with me. Basically , about 2 years ago , the land where my rifle is registered has been sold on and i no longer have permission to access the land in any way , let alone shoot there I was just wondering where i stand when my FAC comes up for renewel in about 2 years time. I do have permission to use my rimmy on a nearby farm , but the farmer is unwilling for me to register my rifle to the land due to the fact that he already has enough guns registered to his property. I thought about joining a ' target gu
  14. Thanks for your swift replies I now understand what's what John
  15. wenzi110 What has your answer got to do with shotgun chokes and my question
  16. I think i'm getting mixrd up about these choke abbreviations Basically , my top barrel has a choke with no notches , and the bottom barrel has a choke with 4 notches. Could somebody please explain which barrel has the widest spread choke , Many thanks , John
  17. As a newbie pigeon / shotgunner i have a question regarding chokes. I would have thought that to hit a pigeon in full flight it would be better to use full or 3/4 choke to get the widest possible spread to hit the bird. But after doing some reading , it seems that a lot of people use 1/4 or 1/2 coke for birds. My Lanber came with 5 chokes and i'm still using the ones that came fitted into the gun , full and 3/4 . I look forward to your responses , John
  18. Thanks for your reply ellir0305 I got my refund through from the first hide that broke , so i've been out and bought some bisley camo netting , 4 deben hide poles ( telescopic ) and a face veil . I've never used a face veil and was just wondering if they are really necessary . Heres a link to show the face veil i purchased , John http://www.bullseyecountrysport.co.uk/epag...cts/HS5300-0008
  19. Hi all Although i've been hunting for many years , this has mainly been with rifles. However , i have recently purchased my first shotgun , a Lanber Sporting Deluxe 12g o/u and have also joined a pigeon shooting syndicate , which covers approx 1200 acres. In my haste ( exitement ) to get started quickly , i purchased a shooting blind online , that had cammo netting and the poles all joined together , and folded up neatly after you have finished shooting. This blind cost about 70 quid , and to cut a long story short was ruined on it's first outing. The problem was that , it w
  20. The spirit level is a habit i picked up when i used to do ' target shooting ' down my local airgun club. I just seemed to shoot better without the risk of canting the rifle. This really paid dividends though when i was shooting grey squirrels in the trees at awkward angles. Obviously i never shoot up in trees with my rimmy , but once zeroed , in my opinion , the scoplevel really does improve my shooting in the field. John
  21. Hi all I've just joined THL so i thought i'd say hello and post a couple of pics of my 3 guns. The first is a Theoben Rapid 7 .22 fitted with a 3 - 9 - 40 scope and Theobens own two stage silencer. Secondly , is a Cz Varmint .22 Rimfire , fitted with a ' walther 4 -12 - 50 ir scope , a parker hale silencer and a scoplevel . And my latest edition , is a Lanber Sporting Deluxe 12g shotgun o/u. John
