  1. He certainly threw his stamp and if you look at Mick 16 years on he was almost his stunt double. I remember a certain person, to some a big name (I won't name and shame) using him on a very none descript bitch.... and then a few years later advertising his pups as being "The finest strain of line bred fell terriers in the country". It takes all sorts LOL
  2. Hi Dilly When Phil was a teenager his father was a regular follower of the B.C. and I was doing the terriers in those days. Phil was always keen as mustard and couldn't do enough to help. One day his father said to me "I want to get him a terrier, but not just any old terrier, something special like he's been used to seeing." I was using Meg a lot in those days and the kid really liked her, we were fortunate enough to be able to get him her litter sister Josie which a friend of mine had. That was his first terrier and he was like the proverbial "dog with two dicks". Ki
  3. Hi Kerny No they're not from a book and all of the photos are my own. Apart from one, they all either came here as puppies, or were bred here. All were laid to rest here. Kindest Regards - Barrie PS. And before Dilly says it.... NO I CAN'T FIT IN THOSE PANTS ANY MORE !!!!
  4. A few photos of some of the old terriers from those lines which I was fortunate enough to own from the 1970's - 1990's
  5. Apache Many thanks for that, and atb to you too. We do indeed “do our best” and I’d like to think the mere fact that terrierwork is the only form of hunting with dogs NOT BANNED by the Hunting Act 2004 is a reasonable indicator of how successful, or otherwise, we are in what we do. Kindest Regards - Barrie
  6. Hi Apache I think we share similar views on what was shown on TV and can only assume "condoning" is a typo for "condemning". I can confirm the NWTF only learned of the program's existence 2 days before it was aired, first saw it at the same time as everyone else and was never approached by BBC Wales for comments, either before or after. Nor were they obliged to do so, as they were reporting an illegal activity (badger baiting), rather than anything to do with legitimate terrierwork. By not crossing that line, they left no proper grounds for a formal complaint (they did their homework
  7. Hi Glyn Most definitely not and I hope my comments have not come across as either promoting, or decrying licensing. I was simply attempting to respond to the thoughts, suggestions and comments of others, and attempt to better inform the debate (obviously not very well LOL). I apologise if I did so in such a manner as to cause confusion. Personally I sit smack bang on the fence on this one. In the past I've heard some very powerful arguments relating to licensing, not least the fact that licenses can just as easily be withdrawn as they can be issued..... the recent National Trust
  8. Hi Apache Thank you for your understanding, I'm sure there's far more on which we'd agree than we could ever disagree ?. Most definitely, you're correct. Apart from the UK, every other country where I've hunted and several others which I've visited have all had some form of licensing/regulatory system in place. And as a visiting outsider I never saw anything which led me to believe they had any less freedom to practice than we did here in the UK, in fact quite the reverse. In some countries, the mere fact that the relevant Hunting Associations have detailed sets of rule books ou
  9. What licensing does do, is to impose a set of rules/regulations relating to conduct (the conditions of licensing) and draws a very distinct line between those who would act within the law, as opposed to those who would not. You break the rules.... then you lose your license and face the penalties. That way the onus falls on the individual, rather than on the responsible majority. J.M.H.O. - Barrie
  10. Thanks Glyn.... I know that's the case and that where you're concerned it wouldn't be the first time you'd stood up to the mark, nor the last either ?
  11. No offence Apache..... but it's a simple fact of life that terrierwork is the ONLY form of hunting with dogs which the Hunting Act 2004 doesn't seek to ban. Things like that don't just happen by accident, or as a result of some form of divine intervention by the Holy Father. It requires people who are willing and prepared to put their head above the parapet, spend countless hours pounding the corridors of Westminster in order to talk to politicians of all persuasions and put the case/defend properly conducted terrierwork (rather than the shameful exhibition we recently saw on TV). Through
  12. Sadly as I see it….. it is yet another case of history repeating itself. It’s not the first time that a very small and unrepresentative minority who have, by their actions and callous behaviour/attitudes dragged terrierwork into the gutter and beyond. Unless I’m very mistaken, the 1990’s clip which was shown related to what those who were about at that time still refer to as the "Builth Wells Case". In that instance, despite the fact that pretty much everything surrounding that case was already illegal, the actions of those involved came across as being so callous and their action
  13. If the channel you're looking at is BBC1 Wales (probably Sky channels 952 and 978) then it should be in English (I hope) ?
  14. EXPOSED: The Secret World of Badger Baiters. BBC1 Wales, 10:35pm Tuesday 22nd May 2018. BBC Wales explores the secretive world of illegal hunting and uncovers a network of badger baiters and their culture. Those outside the BBC Wales area, should be able to pick it up on Sky channels 952 and 978.
  15. Always a brilliant day out..... lots to do for all the family and a grand bunch of lads to have the craic with null
  16. Lutra….. thank you for posting that pic. The recollection of Bert's luxurious "double glazing" (the plastic sheets taped to the inside of the windows to keep the draughts out) made me smile. It's a pity you couldn't have got the front gate in too, I well remember how you would have to jiggle the gate post in order to get it to open or close properly. Thank you for sharing - Barrie
  17. Hi Rabbit No that would be a different bitch..... I was fortunate enough to have had Judy from 8 weeks up until she died. If she had a vice at all, it was that on occasions she could be a little bit silly on a fox and mistakenly thought she was a match for them all. But with anything else she was very sensible and an absolute pleasure to take out. I had many good years of enjoyment with her, at a time when terrier locators were either none existent, or so "new fangled" and unreliable that they were still pretty much shunned. I guess to some extent this also tended to shape our e
  18. Dilly Thanks for posting that old photo..... it was taken at the end of a day's otterhunting with the B.C.O.H. on our annual trip to Pembroke and Carmarthen where we'd all take a week's holiday to hunt the P.C.O.H. waters. From left to right they are Chris, my cousin Bo (my original digging partner) and Bert (I was behind the camera), that old Mini Countryman (LEA 50P) covered some hunting miles in its time. Sadly Chris is the only person in that photo alive today and it's fair to say she's weathered a lot better than I have (but then she's had a pretty easy life). I said I thought i
  19. Foxdropper Unlike so many others, I don't come on here to be contentious or to argue, I have far better things to do with my time. I'd like to think that in most things I say and do, I always try to be honest and base my comments on my own experiences rather than those of others. Clearly you have some doubts about that and you obviously don't know me very well, if at all. As I said previously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it's right that it should be that way, but if we're to fall back on old cliché's I'd suggest "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" is prob
  20. I have it in my mind that Jamie went into keepering for a while..... then he moved out of the area and I lost contact with him after his father died. But he was a "spunky" little kid and we had some chuckles with him and at his expense too (I guess when you have freckles and ginger hair it's to be expected LOL).
  21. As is all too often the case, opinions are frequently trotted out on these forums as if they were fact. And whilst I’ve no desire to “pee on anyone’s parade”, or to speak ill of the dead, it’s important that when this happens those who have actual first-hand knowledge and are still fortunate enough to be able to still tell the tale, should at the very least attempt to put the record straight. Otherwise history will be rewritten…. and sadly in some instances rewritten very badly. I was fortunate enough to be a close friend of Bert’s from the early 1970’s up until his death in June 1995. Al
  22. Yes mate sorted.... and a good cause too
