  1. What if the ferret is stuck behind a dead rabbit and can't run for the nearest exit? Whoever wrote that is a muppet who doesn't respect his animals.
  2. Good breeding will up your chances of success but many a well bred dog has suffered and failed at the hand of an incompetent owner. And many a dog of average and nondescript breeding has gone on to be a good honest worker in the right hands.
  3. Yeah mate, he is full of shit to be asking 180 for one, and full of shit for having one in the first place. Long haired ferrets, or angoras as they are known, are genetic abominations which have difficulty suckling their own young, a cleft nose and no undercoat- which means they can suffer from the cold and are no good for working. Don't be tempted to get one, no need to encourage the daft feckers who breed them!
  4. Yes some of the old ways certainly have their place and I use them as a 'first line of defence'...however when it comes to the crunch and your ferret is stuck behind a dead rabbit a locator is a handy piece of gear to have.
  5. I had a wee jill get pneumonia...like yours she was in a very bad way. Vet thought she was going to die but put her on antibiotics and I shifted her inside where I could keep a close eye on her. Woke her frequently to give her water and runny mashed up food. I ground up chicken, mince and watered it down until it was soupy and she was much more interested in eating that then their normal food. She pulled through and went back to chasing rabbits. Best ferret I ever had and went on to make nearly nine years of age. Hope you have similar success with your hob.
  6. Aye, quite understandable if the stinker has been spayed or neutered. Most rescues are in it because they do genuinely give a shit about ferrets, but they would swiftly go broke if paying for the spay/neuter, housing, feed and other veterinary treatment of sometimes hundreds of ferrets with no return at all. I am far more opposed to the muppets that breed 'unique' and 'fancy' colours in an attempt to make money, often to the detriment of overall ferret quality.
  7. David you ain't talking rubbish mate, excessive carbohydrates in the diet has been linked to pancreatic cancer in ferrets ['insulinoma']and the main source of carbohydrates in the modern ferret diet? Yep, processed foods. This cancer is not found in ferrets which are raised totally on fur and feather. As for the ferretone being linked to cancer, I have no idea. I've never used the stuff, tbh.
  8. Had a fella insist that my Foxie/Jack Russel was a corgi once. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to take no for an answer I just smiled and nodded.
  9. A good ferret will be fit and determined without needing to be kept hungry. A ferret that needs to be hungry to hunt it's best may be up to your standards, but it certainly isn't up to mine. And whoever said anything about fat ferrets?
  10. During winter they have a rabbit available at near enough all times. They always eat before working and I wouldn't bother working a ferret that had to be hungry to hunt.
  11. But when he puts kits out to new homes whats to say those people then won't breed and pass the bad genetics on? Just look at the state of the dog world and all the shit that is out there because people breed from poor stock. Look at American ferrets- sickly, weak creatures bred for nowt but colour and coat. They consider their ferrets 'old' by the time they reach five years. They are rife with health issues. Our ferrets will go the same way if we don't stick to breeding worker to worker fas our breeding criteria. All I can see is an angora going down and coming back up as a chilled, sodden mu
  12. I've never seen one, touched one or bred one so its not well known to myself but you have had it confirmed by breeders, as for shedding coat prior to whelping thats what my jills do dont yours? Y.I.S Leeview I would be suprised if a stinker didn't shed and pluck its fur before having a litter, and assumed that angoras would also. I don't think it has any bearing on their ability to feed the young, though. They just can't produce enough milk to do the job. As I understood it shedding coat was to enable the kits to be able to find the nipples I cant see why a long haired animal can
  13. They can't suckle their young full stop... The milk dries up after a few days. They also lack the normal ferrets double coat, so they cant be kept in the same manner as a normal ferret, and need grooming on a daily basis as they can't clean themselves properly. A pointless fecking animal.. lol why are they not extinct then??? my mate breeds them with no problems whatsoever got some on now @ £ each stupid people pay stupid prices It is well known that the full angora strain can not suckle their young. To raise angora kits from an angoraXangora mating you must take the kits

  16. Leeview- It is well know that full angoras can't suckle their young. I've heard it confirmed by breeders of the useless things. I'm not sure what shedding has to do with this, though. Have I missed something?

  19. It won't effect his hunting ability mate. Dogs aren't stupid [well, most of 'em aren't] and know what can and can't be touched.
  20. I like a ferret that is fearless and bold without being aggressive. These have all turned out to be my favoured working ferrets. I steer clear of ferrets that are too timid to approach or make physical contact with me.
  21. Are all of the ferrets you offer for stud worked hard and proven to be worthy of breeding?
  22. I get a large, shallow storage container and sit it on bricks in their court, one brick supporting each corner. Then fill it up with water. The gap between the floor and the bottom of the elevated tub stays quite cool and the ferts all hang out under there when it's warm, best thing I ever thought up for them. If its real hot I tip a bag of ice in the tub, they love it. If you use this make sure the ferts can climb out of the tub if they decide to go for a swim, especially kits.
  23. I have found the same thing mate- I expect very little from a ferret in it's first year. That being said, some of my slowest starters have turned out to be the best.
  24. Neuter mate, it will cut the odour dramatically, and keep their cage cleaned out religiously.
