  1. always this one Martin....he's 5, still plenty of growing to do..!
  2. This was one of the more active mornings with plenty running about searching for food
  3. Richie, He's a she, just over 3yrs old. Been getting out a fair bit Local, was good to get her out and about this morning as she's had pups (6 weeks) so was a good break away from them. Was up on a bit of ground i go to the other week in Gloucestershire and saw 24 roe in the evening with the sun on their backs, the following morning(mornings are normally better on this ground) on the same ground i took a similar route but much colder with the cloud blocking anything the sun could offer. 6 roe were seen, just goes to show how much the roe like that warmth when feeding. Ive just fi
  4. No Boar in tha area. Most likely to be Muntjac, Chinese water deer, Roe and Fallow
  5. The rut on local ground seems to be long, drawn out and quiet compared to other years. Plenty of young bucks coming into the call, the odd mature buck with a doe, does still with kids, does on their own. I dont think the full moon at what is normally the peak date each year has helped much, with rutting activity continuing through the nights more than often. Ive not seen many "well run" bucks either, they look to have kept their condition reasonably well round here. I think its worth taking the call for the next three weeks
  6. You would think that buck deserves a chapter of his own....!
  7. Seeing as your a real expert on the matter, maybe you could explain why the older animal scores a lot higher than the younger animal. Even though it has less tines of less length.
  8. Wireviz...make your mind up, firstly you type "WERE AS Red deer get more points for size and the number of points on the skull and only a very small portion are given for weight" And now your getting a little closer by saying "Red deer while weight counts for a good few points and there is no mass measurement" I know all the systems very well, especially for red deer. Im well aware there is no mass measurement. But like i keep trying to hint...weight is more important than you think. If your so convinced by yourself, your more than welcome to come and have a look at various
  9. From my experience its down to two main things: 1.) Vitamin deficiency 2.) Too much protein in the diet It would be one or the other, both these are proven reasons You could argue about wear on the hooves but then that wouldnt make sense on harder ground.
  10. Not at all Take the animal which Allan wilson shot last year which measured 231.18, a new british record. This was shot in Yorkshire, not canned, just good genetics and good food. Yes it may have been a park descendant, but it still has to survive!Look at the Endsleigh head, this animal was found years ago and held the cic record for years, not canned. Again just good food, the right genetics and left in piece and quiete. Im afraid i believe your very wrong in you assumption that the measurement systems are SO different for the two species. yes they are different but weight plays a hu
  11. From my experience of the scoring systems and that of red deer its not too different. SCI which is the American scoring system (safari club international) is basically a method made up of how many inches you can get out of a head, all tines are measured, main beam, coronets, width etc. Therefore a stag which is shot in his prime will most probably score better than if he was taken at a later age. However the CIC method which you talk about IS based on weight of skull and antler together, yes there are many other factors but weight is a huge part of the measurement. Take for instance a s
  12. Why different with reds out of interest?
  13. Another tip....dont get the potassium on the skull....otherwise it gets a tan!!
  14. Good point, I was having a think about how to stop them going brown all the way to the end. I'm goint to give this a go on some scabby spikes I cut off ages ago to make whistles with. Practice makes perfect I always go over with a light sandpaper at the end of the tips and also the pearling, only slightly mind. Just brings them out better in my view
  15. Well done Mark, lovely looking heads, the one you took looks a corker, likewise does the one your friend took..doesnt look to be many penalty points on that head! The bench could do with a lick of paint though...
  16. Yup just the job. We use potassium permangonate on all our antlers which are cut off the stags to colour them afterwards for show. Buy the little crystals, i think you can even get it off ebay. you only need a small amount (tiny) for roe buck antlers. Firstly pressure wash them off, then get a mug or cup and put in a few pinches of the crystals, add a little water and it'll turn puple. Looks dodgy i know at that point, but then just grab the head and paint the antlers, as it dries you'll see the antler turning brown, does an absolute corking job. you wont be dissapointed.
  17. ebay........ive had two cracking swarovski scopes off there Bushwear...too expensive, some pointless products and slightly up their own **** stalkersuk....good products, again expensive
  18. Ive seen labradoodles, jack russells, paterdales and cocker spaniels all work perfectly on deer. what you put in, you'll get out. Theres no reason at all why a flat coat wouldnt make a great deer dog
  19. Perfectly normal mate, the beast has not long cast and the first thing to happen is for the pedicle crown to heal over then the process of antler growth starts, nice animal.
  20. As the title suggests, ive a new camera now which for one reason or another doesnt let me put pictures onto the forum as easily. Lost touch with technology for now! Anyways, first is of a yearling muntjac which was shot on a local estate, ive not seen one like this before http://s873.photobucket.com/albums/ab293/tommydeer/?action=view&current=muntjacf.jpg Next is of a muntjac buck i was fortunate to get onto, just made Gold, pretty head though http://s873.photobucket.com/albums/ab293/tommydeer/?action=view&current=mu009.jpg Next one is a Roe buck i had in Scotland b
