i also learn,t by my mistakes ,got ahalf x years ago when i just started out and it was a nightmare it was well bred dog ,just it was me i was,nt experence enough 2 handler a dog of this calibar ,it just one thing on its mind at all time ,this did not have reverse gear did,nt have no brakes aswell lol nealy killed himself a few times out in the field ,so i give him back 2 the lad i got him off and he went 2 the lakes and he turned out 2 be good dog with experience handler ,and now a good few later i,ve ended up with same type of dog BUT i more exerpernce now and i,ve crack him he still got all

bullx lurchers are not for the inexperienced i agree and i learnt the hard way although on another note to the old point of people chucking any old bull to a grey and expecting a level headed well bred dog, not always the case i know but plenty of times it is and yes iv taken the chance on a few over the years of unknown origin if you like but at the end of the day you should choose your bull x from proven lines as well you would for any other cross,EVEN MORE SO INFACT,bit of advice i should have taken on board myself a few times

at least your honest mate the trouble is a lot of inexperianced people want all the attributes(well if you can call them that,i would not) you have listed in their dog thinking it is the making of a good bullx probably because their mates one is also exactly like that where infact this is quite the opposite, yet i bet there hundreds just like yours all over the country that would be better off in the ground than on the end of a dickheads slip with the look at my bull x attitude certainly doesnt help as it generally just tarnishes what can be an excellent dog in the right hands. think iv prob

and knowing your not allowed to shoot them you probably wasnt loaded with a sufficient shot size to take him on anyway ,lucky fox indeed

id want to be getting one right in not just moving lamp from one miss to another dog be running about like a blue arse fly otherwise, being a new dog id want to give it every chance and them reds dont need much of a gap to shake a dog off if there are many escape routes for it as seems this was the case, mine anyway not necessarily yours but you did say even better on the lamp, just how i would do it pre-ban for a higher success rate, just a thought good luck with the dog mate

yes your right the term lurcher is quite varied, and also "dare you say it"your right well beyond some peoples capabilities, certainly for me personaly anyway

bit of faffing about but i got there in the end lol...you got my vote good luck

Not being funny like but if you hate guns and I might add the thread was a comparison between gundogs and lurchers not guns why the f**k click on it you do get the choice not to. hazzar, well said old boy *what, what* nothing as sporting as blasting some tame birds I say *what, what, what* Well said yourself is that a plum in your mouth or some ones cock   Makes me laugh some one posts a thread on gundogs and folks get upset cause people reply to it who actually know something about the subject   i only asked the question based on a f

simple yes but that still leaves all your details, threads posts etc, doesnt delete that does it Why should that be a problem if your posts have been genuine and your replies to others the same why would you want to retract them surely its better to leave them so others can benefit from them unless you feel you have been less than honest or made silly comments that you no longer standby if thats the case be a man apologize and act more sensibly in future all will soon be forgot iv got no problem with anything like that at all mate, but on another note if i was to put a p

but that begs the question why would you want a gun dog with extra pace as presumably they are all ready bred right for the job,or are they, dont know iv lost myself now Would this not technicaly be a lurcher ????? ATB have heard of a few of this type over the years but they certainly not common,i asked about gry/lab long time ago but people were very negative prob due to the likely litter waistage,to heavy I recon your right mate but would be interesting to see what a light weight long dog say Saluki x Greyhound first cross and one of the lighter weight field trial

thats half the battle,if you move in the circles of people that work a good gun dog i probably would not have asked the question but from what iv seen myself then yes a lot of fat labs are out there doing nothing more than a well trained lurcher,ok yes lots of other gun dog breeds used as well but this is just an example
-
A Lurcher will do a gundogs job better than a gundog can do a Lurchers job !..... But a Lurcher will never be better than a gundog at a gundogs job !! Hope that makes sense !! LOL !! Cheers. had to read that twice but yes makes sense
-
there are many reasons for owning and working a lurcher, partly because as we know they are capable of more than one discipline, just got me thinking about them retrieving feather on another thread, not practical i know but in theory could we do without the regular gun dog breeds used. surely if trained to a high standard they would be more than capable of carrying out the task with the added bonus of it actualy capable of catching something if needed. who knows?

best way to start lurcher hunting feathered game???
watchman replied to dawntreader's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Worst bird to start them on Catcher....too many feathers that fall out to easy. not so sure, they retrieve them they will retrieve anything, nothing like a flapper to get the dog interested ....you just said the very same thing in your last post. A young dog shouldn't be started on pigeons because of the feathers falling out, wether its a lurcher or a gun dog. Snipe are great to start of with...... A winged bird isn't good either as it makes the dog want to run in, probably more a gun dog fault though rather than a lurchers... think if they was going to have a problem it
