  1. There is little to choose between Canon & Nikon these days, and the cameras mentioned will both produce decent pics. I prefer Canon myself, but I've used Nikons in the past and have found that they produce a slightly better image "straight out of the packet". You get the most out of a Canon by shooting RAW and spending a little time processing. But that is more down to the software than the actual camera. I think that Canon's autofocus system is second to none, couple that with excellent high ISO performance, and you have a good camera for action shots. I think the Canon range
  2. I'm sure they'll do very nicely, they look lovely in that jug Congrats to you & Mrs Mad Al for putting up with each other for six years
  3. If you're on a really tight budget buying secondhand may be an option. Most of the cheaper DSLRs are very good - they all have much the same features these days. I'd suggest visiting a camera shop to try a few out. A 70-300 lens is ideal for wildlife, but for landscape shots you really need something with a wider angle of view, a zoom starting around 18mm is good, and you'll find that a lot of dslr kits include a wide zoom lens.
  4. Nice pics, handsome old boy The lens seems to be working well.
  5. He certainly looks like he means business Good luck to him!
  6. I do a bit of paddock maintenance, mainly mowing, topping, & rolling, but I don't travel great distances or take on any contracts. I don't think there's a great deal of money in it if you have to buy all the kit from scratch. Depends on the area you live in too - bigger horse establishments often have a little traccy and a few bits of kit anyway, the others tend to ask local farmers to do jobs for them. If you're on the edge of town where there are lots of little pony paddocks you may be able to get quite a bit of work. But the work is very seasonal and weather dependant. If you
  7. Some nice pics in your collection, I like the shots of the river, and that is such a cute pup in a pocket
  8. Good shots - I like the third one, it looks really menacing!
  9. Some good shots there Kay "Bleak" weather is often the best for photography - nothing quite like a stormy sky to add a bit of atmosphere to your pics. Ever thought about doing some of the local landscapes? Even town skylines can look good when topped by a few dramatic clouds. It's pretty boring landscape wise round here, so I find myself looking up at the sky most of the time Hope you're feeling better now - nothing like a bit of fresh air and exercise...
  10. Must have been an amazing sight To get good wildlife pics you really need a DSLR and a long lens. 70-300mm zoom is useful, but this kind of kit is bulky & heavy and not really pocketable Some of the small compact cameras have reasonable zooms, but they do have slow shutter reaction and the quality will never compare to a dslr.
  11. Good shots - lucky to see this, and even luckier to have a camera with you
  12. Very nice shots. I like the black and white ones, specially the bridge. It's got a bit of a lean though, would look better if the pic was rotated slightly to make the bridge level. I like the way you've caught the water droplets on the ducks too.
  13. Cracking shots - can hear that little robin singing away
  14. There's always something to photograph if you look hard enough...
  15. Some excellent shots there Kay - I love the one of the deer all lined up looking at the camera The flowers are crocus, by the way, and very nicely photographed. I think you should definitely get a DSLR camera - you deserve it! Why not let all your friends and family know that it's what you really really want and ask them to put something in your camera fund at birthday/xmas time instead of everyone getting you a little pressie?
  16. I have a 70-300 Lens but to be honest I don't use the image stabilising (VR) that much. I mainly use it for action or wildlife shots so I have to use quite a fast shutter speed anyway. I still get loads of pics of blurred birds though - surprising how much they move around...
  17. If you want to get action pics of dogs you're going to need a DSLR. The fixed lens fujifilm camera won't hack it I'm afraid as it will still suffer from shutter lag. I'd suggest you have a look at the cheaper Canon and Nikon cameras, but Sony are doing some reasonable models too. Far as image quality and speed of processing there's not much to choose between the brands really. Canon do an EOS 1000D which is around £300 brand new, but you would need to buy a lens too. Nikon and Sony DSLRs can be bought new for less complete with lenses.
  18. I really like Show of Hands - this one is my favourite but it's a very sad song cos it's true...
  19. I knew a staffie called Tyson, it belonged to a dog trainer, so was not allowed to be a brute. It did look at one of my collies funny once though...
  20. How romantic... I hope it's love at first sight and the real thing
  21. Lovely shots Kay, did you take them with your new camera?
  22. Canon, but you're looking at S/H from ebay or similar. 300D more 300Ds The 350D is the model that replaced it, so expect to pay a little more for one of those. If you've any doubts about the 300D, this pic was taken with one... It managed to keep up with my collies
