  1. Yep, i think the same, give them a try, but give them some easy stuff, and run them with the hob. If they seem to be playing around, then hold them back. This goes hand in hand with what I have been thinking lateley, do you think you can start ferrets to early (especially the jills)? I start the season in late Sept/early Oct and usually cannot wait to get the hob kits going from that year (Usually born around may) so will be 4 months old, they don't need much persuading to be honest. I do keep a few jills to work which usually only get a look in around now pushing 6 months old. I've notice
  2. I lost a good line a few years ago, it had about 5 generations going into it, these were all bred out to decent working stock, and after trying for a few seasons to mate the old hob, i realised it was him that must have been a jaffa. Too late at this point. Shame really, around % of the litters would make the grade on that line. Luckily we got some decent working stock of an friend and started again, but it was slim pickings last year, we only had one decent hob ferret untill last years kits started getting into it! The not feeding them the day before can put the edge on them a little, but i
  3. Cheers for the replies fellas. SJM yes the snow gets boring after a while. Whippeter honestly you do not want the snow. Will school is a terrible place for an outdoors guy. Hubbs the soft snow will help the pup to catch, but when it crusts up, then it makes it harder! Festa good luck on sunday. Stealthy they are turning into flying machines, my old man looked shocked when he saw one of the poleys leap 2ft off the ground and latch into a rabbit i was trying to despatch. Chez keep on laying them bricks pal, not many chaps are busy now! You'll have plenty of time over xmas mate!
  4. 3/4 inch ply screws together fairly well with a bit of wood glue to bond it. It's deffo strong enough, but a little heavy if it ever wants moving. I have only limited space in my yard which at the moment is housing 13 ferrets.
  5. Are they a hob and a jill? Looks like they have found there way in life!
  6. If i lived closer, i'd be up for that! (don't think the boss would let me do 3 days on the trot though!)
  7. Good show fellers, look like fine bunny's!
  8. After watching the forecast most of the week, the weather looked shocking for the weekend, so managed to scab today off work! Cheer's boss! Arrived at around 8.30am and the snow was still hanging around, (nearly 2 weeks now) and a heavy frost covered the ground, also the dreaded mist! We wanted to get to new ground really, but had to be satified again with clearing up odd's and ends on our land. (the old feller at 70 cannot manage the big hike's any more.) Took out 2 of this years poley hobs, quite big now, alongside one of the older albino's. These are two of four young hobs fr
  9. You been getting many Whin? Is the ground thawing out any yet? It's just started thawing for us today as we were leaving after dinner.
  10. dont you just love young will, openly admitting on an open forum about commiting illegal activities, What is the LEGAL way to kill a trapped rat then? Unless you shot tem, which is quite hard when they are running around a cage with bars on it! Good point Will, i suppose saying they were shot is the best line to use.
  11. The lad just let them go Stubby mate, what happened from there is just nature! I don't think anyone in control of laws can argue against where the trapped animals were released!
  12. Nice one young Will, let nature take it's course!
  13. Maybee a few battle scars, but the rats teeth are not designed to kill like a ferrets. Maybee she needs to see what a ferret is up against, maybee she will decide that her animals are lacking after an introduction to the rat.
  14. Yep old mans is pretty good, it's a 52 plater, with an alpha back. Also BFG'd. Even he hasn't been stuck!(YET) Only downside is when they go wrong, just simple specialist knuts and bolts cost a fortune, and nothing else fits. Would like to try out a D4 hilux, i rekon they could be good!
  15. It's just got it's arse up Kinderbeano, they lock solid sometimes in the burrows, and even the biggest nastiest hobs cannot get to the right end. Nothing but digging up the garden would get them out. (but you cannot go doing that!) Like this.
  16. Could be too much noise up top like you say, but then how do you prevent smell up top, of stinky humans and dogs, and then also the dog running them down the hole's. You could be as quiet as you like, but i bet the rabbit knows you're there. If a rabbit has the slightest inkling anything is wrong, it will make it's move. Whether bolting out of popholes to evade the dog, or staying put and facing the ferrets. There one step ahead of any man that walks the land.
  17. Oh and good on you getting out Tyla, sounds like you had to work for the bag!
  18. I reckon the bunny's will be up next year with the cold we have had over the last 2 weeks, the frost is bound to kill off a lot of fleas laying dormant in many burrows, then hopefully mixi will be slowed down a little!
  19. If they are wild rats, then she had better get used to finding them still alive after days loose in the caravan, and hungry ferrets. They will give a good account of themselves in a confined space, but usually the ferret if up to the job wins. Let loose in a caravan, the rat will run rings around them with the space availiable, and probably get out of any exit, even tiny.
  20. Anything that they are used to feeding on. If there are rats, then there is a food source, so try using whatever is around. But sometimes, a different type of food may encourage a bit more attention. Anything fleshy can usually overpower the urge to eat grain, from fish to fowl. (but may take a while to get them used to it.)
  21. I back this thought of young Will's, it's a nasty world underground with the critters, if only people knew! A great idea though, and had been thinking myself if it could be done, i think the top mounted camera will come in for a bit of stick, (how many times do you see the skull tops covered in mud?) and underneath camera would also get obscured by the fur when engaged. Could there be any way of side mounting it?
  22. I start in late Sept/early Oct. And finish as soon as we get the first doe with it's tubes swelled up. Usually early to mid Feb. And this is on high ground on the hills. Low ground they will breed later, and start sooner, sometimes all year round in mild weather. Once upon a time if i'd have been given a wage for keeping the numbers down I would have done, or if i could use the bunny's. (ferret food) But don't think I would now. I think i've gone soft to be honest, lol!
