What's he done wrong? Pups enjoying itself, mine used to do it all the time never bothered me until they started draging it round the garden then put them back till finished mowing, nothing wrong with them when under the sod either!

thing is the lad wants it to be an earth dog as well, I agree if you're a purist terrier man( as I once was) , but if you haven't a great deal of spots to work it in, (deep places are iffy by me), then get the most out of it and use it for everything, it only has to please you at the end of the day , they don't drop in on bunnys when they've seen enough so you aren't ruining it,

if you can't get an earth dog to bush or kill rats then there is something wrong

If you want it to do the lot then buy a pup from a long line of earth dogs, proven parents grand parents etc, then rear the pup as a mooching dog under control, ratting, then show it an occupied earth with a seasoned worker in it and let it have a look, you should have the full package then, but if you buy a pup out of bushing dogs chances are it won't tick all the boxes

I'm going to start sprocker next season , would it be best to leave her on lead first outing , let her quarter only, maybe send for a seen retrieve ? I no it depends on indervidual dog but roughly how much would you start with, her basics are good in the conditions I put her in, not saying she will be good on a shoot because she hasn't been on one!

If it's easy i'd catch him up and keep him away from her each day until she's laid and you've swopped it for a dummy one,then let him back in to her until the evening then catch him up again but if not then let him in for a day then away with him until she's hatched as a hen will sort of store sperm inside her and use a bit for each egg as such so he don't need to really tread her every day.She may lay up to 7 but 4 or 5 is usual for a goldie so you should get a couple more from her and i would still let her rear it as one chick is better than nothing and god forbid it might be your only chick

Now I have taken cock goldfinch out of aviary ( because he was smashing eggs) will the bond the pair have be lost, how long can you leave them apart, my Siskin has 2 chicks and 2 eggs left and I don't want him killing the chicks, when will it be safe to put him back in and will the bond be lost by then? Tricky question but opinions appreciated thanks?

I have now seen with my own eyes it's the goldfinch cock smashing eggs, let dogs out of kennel about 6 hen sat tight so I thought I'd nip them in field before replacing for dummy egg, got back in 10 min later hen of nest cock on nest pecking new egg, gutted but I at least no now! What do I do now I've taken cock out but goldfinch has laid 3 already, how many more can she lay if any and if only 1 is it a good idea letting her rear it or not?good news is 1 siskin egg hatched out so far

Goldie sat on egg yesterday only to be smashed later on, checked 6.30 this morning and sat on another, fed later and had another look , smashed again, checked Siskin and 4 eggs not 5 now, must be goldie cock I think , but don't want to take him out as he's always been in aviary not cage, put dummy eggs in goldie nest and she's sat on them, next 2 or so eggs I will take out and put dummy's in then put real ones back in hopefully he will have got bored of trying to smash dummy eggs? Any better ideas

13 days is the gestation period or there abouts for siskins but is it 13 days after first or last egg, I left eggs in and didn't replace with dummy eggs until last was laid, my hen had 5 altogether so will they hatch at same time on the 13th day after the 1st one laid

My lurches have been on the same dry food for years, plain bag no fancy name but they did well on it, they also have barf 3 or 4 times a week, anyway the dry food has changed as all my digs skin coat and general condition has deteriorated , I do give supplements as well, what good dry food would be worth buying, not after the cheapest just something that keeps them well, I will still feed barf as well but not all the time

Slipper, because I couldn't get her to focus on me I took her to Ian openshaw, it was his mate Iwho showed me how to get her started, if you google it you will find dimensions for boards etc, I started with 2 boards in garden about 1 meter apart with her on lead led her on to a board and said place, then told her to sit , keep lifting lead or tapping under chin until she looks, took ages with mine and still needs reminding, then place to next board, same again get focus , do it over and over then move on to next step slowly, you either need to see him or better get his dvd, I couldn't explain
