  1. Does anyone know if things are likely to change with regards to the above. Have any dates been set or is it all together unlikely to happen at all? Thanks, Dan
  2. In brief you'll likely want a o/u sporter to cover you for clays and game/vermin. 12 bore is common (cheapest cartridges), 20 bore also worth considering but cartridge price puts me off them. .410 if you like making things difficult for yourself! Gun fit should drive your decision when buying - best bet is to get to your nearest clay ground and have a lesson. They should be able to let you try different guns and help you to understand what to be looking for. Reading a thousand posts on here (or anywhere else) still wouldn't help you as much as an hour with a coach, a trap and some diff
  3. The best advice I was given is to mount the gun with your eys closed, be sure that it is in the best position and then open your eye. This way you can tell straight away if your too high or too low - you should ideally be looking straight down the rib without budging your eye when you open it. Then you know that the gun is a natural fit!
  4. In fairness I did tell him that I wanted a 'premium' gun to start with - it wasn't until I'd left the shop that I had a think and a re budget! Matey really wouldn't have sold me anything that wasn't right! I will def get myself something nice in times to come but for now I just can't justify it - double glazing for our bedrooms is further up the Mrs's list of priorities (and mine if I'm honest!).
  5. I have been to the sportsman gun centre (Exeter) at the weekend and they have laid down the law on gun fit in a way that no other RFD has been close to. It has changed my view on shotguns, whereas I had previously been set on buying a Miroku MK70 (having shouldered one in another shop and been told it was 'fine') but the v knowledgable bloke tried me with and MK70 and an MK30 sporter and both were miles off. We then moved over to the Beretta's and they seemed to be much better for me - they had no used ones and the cheapest in stock (a 686e @ £1199) was too much for my already stretched b

  7. I asked my FEO this very same question when I had my visit earlier this year and she answered in a very convoluted and vague way but essentially said yes – best thing to do is phone your own licensing dept and ask them, and don’t take anything but a straight answer (then let me know what they said!)
  8. How important is that with a 22lr? I heard some say it's a must and others say that they just shoot them out of the box and clean them every few hundred rounds. I've ordered a bore snake but have no other cleaning products yet - what do you suggest (nothing too anal please!?)
  9. Trust me when you've used the .22 for some time you'll not want to be without one, it'll be case of the CF as well as I can well imagine, the cf's would def be 'aswell as' - I've used 22lr quite a bit and (now I have one) it'll always have a space in cabinet!
  10. 22lr mate - not gonna bother with an HMR, think I'll hack out the 22 for a while and then get myself on the centrefires. Best of luck with it bud - mine was an extreme case, everything that could have gone wrong did, I'm sure you'll be fine!
  11. I received my FAC and SGC yesterday and have already been to purchase a CZ style and it’s just the job. Hoping to get out and blast some bunnies with it this weekend. I had my visit on the 1st of September to give you an idea of how long in can take, and that’s with Devon and Cornwall who are meant to be very good – it was only due to several human errors and staff there going on holiday though, my advice would be to wait for three weeks and then give them a polite call every week or so because if you leave it to them they could be a bit slack! It’s bloody good when you’ve
  12. When I sent mine off I used a mate and my future father in law as they both held FAC's and SGC's and I figured that cert holders would be good to use for the character ref.
  13. I told mine that I knew the land reasonably well but that I was going to be walking it all with the various landowners before I took a gun out so that I knew exactly what was and wasn't safe. She seemed to like that. It really is nothing to worry about - if anything, I felt like I was the one driving the conversation and if I didn't have loads of questions she would have been gone after ten minutes!
  14. Like John said - much safer to use a 12 bore, if it bolts a 410 will be little use
  15. Good shooting mate, good looking fox too! Where did you hit it?
  16. I got a Brattonsound cabinet through Carp Trading - the make them to order so you have to wait 3 weeks which might not suit you but they are cheaper than I've seen in any shop - ideal if you can wait. Mole Valley Farmers is a good shout, they actually stock a few Brattonsound cabinets and if they have them in stock they will be the cheapest shop to buy from.
  17. I was told by my RFD to choose the Scirocco over the SAK for my CZ .22 (they said they'd tried it and it was v quite - not sure about hmr though) - someone on bbs said the Scirocco is hard to strip/clean - I reckon I'll end up getting the SAK
  18. Type in the calibres into google images or wikipedia mate, either should have pictures showing a range of rounds side by side
  19. good luck mate ;-) Thanks bud - it's been just over three weeks now and still nothing, they've told me there's a back log of certificates to be issued and it should be sent out over the next few weeks (that was a week ago!). Got a CZ Style 22lr waiting in the shop for me too - I'm itchin to pick'em up!
  20. That's interesting - do all game variants of shotguns have auto safety then?
  21. I thought that semi auto's were restricted to now more than three shots - or is the law different in Ireland Is there a way of owning a larger capacity semi in the UK?
  22. If you've got reason for a fox calibre straight away (sounds like you have) then put in for a .223 at the same time - you may have to have a mentor for your first few outings (which I think is the case for any centre fire application these days, could be wrong) but it'd be worth it and would saving paying to add it later. As for the land - I doubt you'll get open from the outset but many on here have said that after adding several permissions to their closed licence, the force has agreed to open it up for the sake of both them and the holder (less paper work and checks!).
  23. yes thats a good idea, i've managed to get some of my information on to the profile page, and whenmy brothers here later i'll get him to put some pictures up for me. DOES ANYONE know if i don't complete the ''locations to shoot'' section on the FAC application will it be refused? My gun safe's up on the wall, got my scope, bi-pod, sling, slip, deposit on the CZ 452 HMR, but then i'm stopped by the FAC! cheers I've replied in the other post but now I see your problem - you have 2 choices: 1) Keep trying until you find some land (this is the best route I reckon, you're b
