  1. PS. The set trigger is very good for a standard trigger too!
  2. I have a Pro Hunter 2 Mountain (short and black) which I bought second hand earlier this year. It wasn’t in mint condition but it’s tidy and perfectly functional. Given the choice I would have gone for the stainless option as the bluing has rubbed a little on my barrel (saves me worrying about it’s first wear marks!). Not sure on the bolt shroud but I’ll be sure to look next time I use it. Yes the safety wheel is plastic but it doesn’t protrude much so should – the safety system and bolt in general are very good (the bolt is a much better fit than the Tikkas and Sakos I looked
  3. Normally a mentor can be anyone with a centrefire (ideally deer legal if that's what you're going for) on a open ticket. I have mentoring on my ticket and it just says that I must be accompanied by an experienced centrefire user, it doesn't stipulate a name even though my variation went in with a letter from my chosen person
  4. Go for a 12 mate - the difference in recoil will be sod all, the cartridge prices, choice and availability will be vastly better! Gun choice and re sale will be better with a 12 too!
  5. Best wishes for a swift recovery but do enjoy the time you have in the meantime! Dan
  6. I’ve been in the sportsman a few times and over heard their salesmen talking people out of Tikka’s/Sako’s and pushing them towards Steyr – then I went in there to look at the Tikka’s myself one day and sure enough, matey went in to the Steyr pitch within minutes. I’d be surprised if they don’t try it with you – no bad thing mind, I’m delighted with mine!
  7. I bought my Steyr 243 earlier this year second hand from the local RFD – it’s not in perfect nick but it shoots bang on and came with a P8 mod (as new), a half decent scope and a harris bipod so for me it was the perfect package – would have been well over double if I’d bought new and I just couldn’t stretch my budget. If you buy on the condition that you’ll be bringing it back if it doesn’t shoot straight then you can’t really go wrong - IMO
  8. Devon & Cornwall – have been very good to deal with and have been quick at turning things around unless there is land to be checked, that’s lead to a few lengthy waits, once on application and once with a variation. I should think that an open licence holder would have no complaints at all.
  9. Then he will not be using Ballistics tips then. John Forgot to say 87gn Ballistic tip Nosler homeloads (he said they are Nosler heads, I couldn't be sure but they have 87gn written in pen on the brass by the guy that loads them and they have red, plastic tips)
  10. I completely agree with Mr L here – my stalking partner uses 87gn Nosler home loads (I use or 90gn factory SP stuff) specifically for Roe and they always deliver the goods, especially with neck shots (his and my preference where suitable). Our deer drop, they don’t run – that’s plenty humane enough for me! It’s each to their own but to say that ballistic tips are either illegal or entirely unsuitable shows a blinkered view. Similarly, we shoot deer mainly as pest control and the meat doesn’t go through a game dealer so it’s no problem for us as long as the animal is dead.
  11. I was just about to choose a membership/insurance provider and SACS have just got them selves a new member off the back of your post. Glad to hear you got there in the end!
  12. Find another £200 ish and get a Hungarian S & B 8x56 - not the answer you're looking for but I bet loads will agree!
  13. Try all the used o/u's in your price range and find what fits you best - a good deeler should be able to check fit properly. Look out for Lanber, Bettinsolli, Baikal, Lincoln and Browning medalists - all should be about for less than £400 I'll second the others about going for a 12b - cartridges are far cheaper and there's a lot more to choose from against 20b.
  14. How do you get on with that Viper mate? I'm looking at a scope for my 243 for stalking and foxing (day and night) - I'm either going to go for this or a fixed S&B 8x56 (if I can find a used one or find some cash somewhere). How do you find it in low light evenings and under a lamp? Does it have a illuminated ret? Cheers, Dan
  15. I've got the CZ Style (Black synthetic stock with nickel finish barrel and action) and it shoots very well, is well built for the price and looks good too! If you prefer a wood stock then there are a few to choose from
  16. Let me be the first to say CZ 452 in what ever variant you fancy the look/feel of. 16" barrel witha SAK mod is the way to go - then spend your change (and a bit if you can) on a scope
  17. I'll third Mr L's comments - one of the reasons I've not been on here much lately!
  18. You should be asking them not us - quick before your ticket's printed and it's too late!
  19. Go for it mate and put in for a SGC aswell (the force will like you for going co-terminous, it saves them a vsit). Must people wont have have had more experience than you when they first apply - knowing the land well will help and you can tell them your boss will show you the ropes on your first few outings. From my experience (and unless you've not mentioned any criminal record or you're only 13 etc etc), you'll get your licence without question.
  20. I'll second that - rimfire as it's so close and it needs to be quiet!
  21. There's some good bargains to be had on pigeonwatch - keep you eyes peeled!
  22. Might be better if you go for something with a single trigger (anything abit more modern) - I tried an old double trigger gun the other day and kept forgetting the other trigger for the second barrel. Single trigger is by far the norm these days so it'd be better for you learn on a single than to get used to a double and then change again when you upgrade.
