I stayed in a bamboo hut years ago in the southern Philippines,a deeply religious/superstitious area,the old lady who owned the hut gave me a dried out stingray tale to put under the bed,it kept mananangals and suchlike creatures at bay if they approached at night,it must have worked as I never saw any.
