  1. D'ya know - a lady I know of, quite prominent in the terrier world, shan't name her 'cos it wouldn't be fair, reckoned that people would stop, although I should say she's for docking herself, but she really thought most owners wouldn't bother docking after the lastest Animal Welfare Act came out! Glad the consensus I'm getting proves her wrong.
  2. Now who told you a tall story like that????? Well, they're a far cry from Crufts! (Not that I've been - and wouldn't want to neither and never would!) At least working dogs shows are supposed to support the countryside, whether they do or not is up to the people who attend!
  3. Thanks everyone for the feedback! I think that I don't like being pushed about by London, so will continue to support the way we run the countryside, and that includes docking working dogs. And, the reason I care about shows is because they are "working" dog shows - I go along to support the idea of working terriers and lurchers regardless of whether or not they actually work because Joe Public has no idea what dogs are actually for nowadays. Very rarely do I ever show a dog - and I never even take the two with tails out in public, which is really why I mentioned it on here! I'm not ash
  4. Not really - just didn't get them docked because I bred them myself, they're not show dogs, just happy ratters and pets. I knew that's all they would be, so didn't bother. I don't have any strong feelings either way - I have one docked because I bought her that way - doesn't bother me that she's docked, although she's the one that is fit for show, but the worst ratter!
  5. Just wondering where the whole docking thing is going these days. Will people stop getting their dogs docked because of the latest Animal Welfare Act. We could get around it this year by not having puppy classes at shows, but what about next year? And what about the real workers that don't show - are you getting all the certificates and paperwork etc...? Are we flouting it and meeting up in clink, or not docking? Help me make up my mind - I just don't know 'cos I've got three patterdales, two with tails and one docked. They all look fine in their own ways and none of their tails have
  6. Nice looking dog. Why was the tail kept? Because of all the hoo-har with the new rules, or some other reason. Must admit, I've got a patterdale with a tail and it's never come to any harm. Can't say it looks odd 'cos I'm used to it now!
  7. No - definitely not been near a dog, although she lives with a couple of castrated dogs. And she's had no weight gain either and is in excellent condition... Would you expect weight gain with a phantom pregnancy? Not had much experience in this area before... sometimes they gain weight other times the dont if shes only four weeks gone she might still get bigger any chance of any pics My other half thinks it would be a laugh if I posted a picture of my boobs on here rather than the dog, or even the dog's boobs... But, I haven't got any of her at the moment. She's a nice looking

  11. My friend has a 16 month old lurcher that finished her first season four weeks ago. She still has mammary development, but is not actually running milk. Does anyone know if this is 'normal" after four weeks and/or if there is anything she can do about it. She's not been worked during her season, but has been exercised alot.
  12. Not sure if I'm on the right forum to ask this question, but someone told me the easy way to smarten up your terrier is to clip it rather than strip it... I'm told that after two weeks it will look like a well stripped dog without all the hard work... What d'you lot think? Anyone do it?
  13. Just wondering if anyone knows who the judge was at the Essex Game and Countryfair today... He gave me some very useful advice. Very pleasant chap. Who is he? It was a good show too - despite the rain. The LurcherWorld organisation was fantastic. Congratulations! And we loved all the accents too! Actually, thinking about it, it's odd that the Essex Gamefair was dominated by (gorgeous) northern accents... Where are all the Essex Boys & Gals? Great Show. Well done to everyone involved in organising it. Well done to my son too who in his first ever child handler class, very prec
  14. Yeah - hoping to go. I reckon it needs supporting - don't see enough support for countrymatters in Essex. I'm on a mission to show the Essex townspeople that we actually live in the countryside and country matters matter. Now I'll hop off my soap box!
  15. Had a lab/whippet once, well, ex-husband did. She (the dog) hated me! He was given her supposedly as a pet 'cos his step brother bred them, but being a first cross litter, got a mixed litter, so she was rejected cos she was weird looking. That said, she may have looked weird, but she was the smartest dog I ever knew - willing as the day is long, sensible, strong, agile and fast, would retrieve, stay (for days if you wanted her to!) and very clever. Very versatile. She could have been a one-off though. She may have hated me, but if I could, I would re-create her instincts anytime... not a
  16. Yep - We're gonna work on a beer tent for next year for sure. We had thought there are more regulations than there actually are, so it's something we'll definitely try to get sorted. Would you want to see more stalls, or just the stalls that are there selling more variety of stuff? Reason I ask is that Priory Pets is our local pet/country shop and they provide us with some of our prizes in return for advertising and no pitch fee (yes, we're mad!) The burger van also feeds our judges and stewards in return for no pitch fee (so we hope they all take advantage of that!) It's very helpf
  17. Yeah - we were pretty busy! There's only four of us that organise this show - there's no club, and we get some helpers on the day - most of whom have no idea what they're letting themselves in for! There were loads of lurchers there, but then there was a Chatsworth qualifier up for grabs. Heaps and heaps of terriers too that kept Ruth busy! Fabulous champions - very proud of them and excellent line-ups in the Championship. Pleased that we had more ferrets than ever before too. No grumbles that I heard, but if anyone has any, let me know - we always respond to criticism to try to make
  18. do you have a schedule or what time it starts? Terriers & Lurcher Classes start at 11am, ferrets start at 1pm. Pedigree Classes start at 11.30am and Crossbred/novelty classes start at 11am Let me know if you want any more info...
  19. Sadly not; wish there was! Grandma Plonkas will be there doing the steaks/burgers etc and possibly an ice cream van too. Hope to have a beer tent there next year, not that that's much help for you this year! There's alcohol to win in the raffle though!

  21. I've always worked in the theory that if my dogs have the ability to catch it and kill it, they've also got the ability to eat it, or pick off what they want and leave the rest (fur, etc). They always eat their favourite part first - brain for some reason. It's nature. Also, one of them catches fish (oh so talented!). And hey presto, he's the one with the best coat! They all have good teeth too - not like a racing greyhound I rescued once, that had been fed "pappy" food all its life. She had to have most of them taken out! That's what I do anyway and they're all still alive, a vet
  22. Anyone got any tips on a gadget or cunning technique for getting the undercoat out of a smooth coated lurcher? She keeps moulting and I just want to get it all out!
  23. £9.00 PER PERSON what did they have the red arrows there crazy price to get in £5.00 a car is plenty enough for these small shows if the carry on like that it will be the end of the smaller shows shame really is it to do with insurance costs or the venues, i would have thought a lot of the pubs with big beer gardens would be glad of the trade these days Talking of the Red Arrows - We really did have them last year at Woodham Ferrers (well, three of them happened to be flying past, but we did announce that we hoped to be able to afford all of them in 2008!) BTW, free entry to Woodham F
  24. And forgot to say - NO ENTRANCE FEE! £1 Per class in the ring.
