  1. Where is it - I mean where in the country?
  2. I think you're right there!
  3. I'm still on the fence on this one... (unless they are seriously working) Borders aren't docked and I just can't see why. Surely they can get in just as much bother with a tail... My patterdales tails have never come to any harm on a bit of ratting. But then the docked one looks prettier! Got it all the wrong way round haven't I...!!
  4. D'ya know - a lady I know of, quite prominent in the terrier world, shan't name her 'cos it wouldn't be fair, reckoned that people would stop, although I should say she's for docking herself, but she really thought most owners wouldn't bother docking after the lastest Animal Welfare Act came out! Glad the consensus I'm getting proves her wrong. Must be talking about R.A now LOL LOL..Most know her views on (working terriers) This person hails from Cornwall... Doesn't have those initials either. Wouldn't be fair of me to name them though.
  5. yes mate , i know there must be black n tans in the breeding, this isnt the first that has popped up.i was curious what peple would class him as? i was just looking at him today, thinking to myself that if i didnt know his breeding i would take him for a full lakeland, to me he he just a blank n tan pup, hopefully in 2 yrs time i will be able to class him as a worker! thats the class im aiming for! nice pup tho aint he? Nice looking pup - and you can see a border head on it... So, not sure where that takes you - patterdale/border/lakie... Has it a typical border bite - ie more square ja
  6. Yeah - see what you mean, but then does it matter to the terrier world that we would be getting away from the "types". I suppose it doesn't matter to the true working man, but does matter to the showing man... But I'm sure there's other opinions out there... C'mon!
  7. Me too - Not sure what to think of the fact that there has been so many people reading the topic, but noone commenting... Interesting! Come on everyone! Give me your views!
  8. Here's a thing I've often pondered, so please educate me... A lurcher is a crossbred dog and most likely the make-up of the dog will be determined by the kind of work it will undertake - ie a Bull Cross will work deer, a predoninantly greyhound lurcher may work large fields (like in Essex), collie cross more likely to work in parts of the country where short bursts are required - smaller fields, etc etc. I know that's quite a few sweeping statements and extremely generalised, but hopefully you get my drift... We breed lurchers differently for different work... So, in the working terr
  9. I can't believe anyone would say that pup looks weird, or odd... What's wrong with it? Equally, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the docked one of course. Why not keep tails if they're not going to undertake work that could harm a tail. And... Here's something I've often wondered... What is the difference between a border's tail and a patterdale, russell's or lakeland's tail? Are they more robust?.......
  10. One docked, one undocked... They're pants photos, but you can see a tail. Neither dog is attractive and the one with a tail is only half patterdale, quarter russell and quarter heinz terrier (probably even including some teckle or even yorkie!)
  11. I do know people who do it for financial motivation, although they do work their dogs. I think the best thing to do is look at the positives - that (like you say) the work of working terriers and lurchers is being promoted at these shows and even those people who only show aren't "anti's". Hopefully, if they do breed crap dogs, no one will buy them, but I think their intentions are good - to breed a type that is capable of the job intended and that is what a good judge should look for. On the flip side, my dogs are excellent ratters, but would be laughed out of a show ring.
  12. Where can you get rosettes for 20p? I have to pay 55p for mine and I thought I was getting a good deal!
  13. I guess not, but at least they could be traced to someone who did care about them once... and I suppose if someone cared enough to chip them, then they should care enough to update the paperwork if they sell them on... Like you say though - heaps of praise for those unsung heros! Southern Lurcher Rescue were on to it as soon as they could and would have saved him...
  14. I have had a lot to do with staffys .. Cut to the chase forget the crap , when a staffy reaches a certain point in life its head splits this usually is around the same time as the bald patch starts normally meaning that a patch means a good head and is just a way of telling its splitting .. Normally nothing to worry about but it can last to 3.5 years old as a staff finishes sliting normally around this point.. To be fair fresh meat can sort this out as what you feed them comes back 10 fold... Hope this helps That too is very interesting... you don't consider the man
  15. Would that type of mange be so concentrated in a relatively small spot for so long though? Sounds very interesting and why is the bull blood prone to it...?
  16. When my patterdale X was a pup, he developed a bald spot in the middle of his head at the back. The vet thought it was mites and gave us some special shampoo. The vet said we all have mites, but he probably had a weak immune system and couldn't fight them off. He's six now (the dog, not the vet) and the spot has never gone completly and it only seems to get more pronounced when he is stressed... like if we go on holiday when the dogs come with us, although if it weren't for the spot, you'd never think he was stressed! It just looks like we've permanently clipped a patch of hair anout 1cm i
  17. Very sad story but sadly happening all the time. Terreir man, are you saying all dog wardens are c...s??!!! A dog warden bent over backwards for me when my lurcher went missing a cpl of months ago! She found her 4 days later. So come on get a grip, dont tarnish everyone with the same brush.... I appriciated it more than you could ever ever imagine! Very pleased your story had a happy ending. Guess that's because you're a responsible owner and made the work of the wardens work for you. This poor chap's owner, seemingly couldn't be bothered to report his dog missing, even though it really
  18. Well, the council's that employ them seem to have some ******* silly rules let's put it that way! I don't understand why the warden didn't call Southern Lurcher Rescue - at the end of the day, this dog could have received treatment, at cost price paid for by SLR if only the right people had been called at the right time instead of as Kay says, leaving it to the "small unsung hero's"... Having said that, our local council do micro-chipping at home for £10... I suppose their only argument is that if the owner had the dog chipped, poor Carl might still be here, or might have been put down
  19. Tell you what - my eyes were leaking as I wrote it!!
  20. I've called this "Sad Story", but it's probably just normal... I'm not going to name anyone in this... A stray dog was found by a good samaritan. They took it to their vet. The vet thought that the dog may have a broken hip, but as no one was going to pay for x-rays, all he could do was make the dog comfortable and contact a well known, national society that protects animals. However, that society couldn't do anything; the vet was informed that the Society could have helped if it was a wild animal - a fox or rabbit or such like, but as a dog is considered someone's property, the own
  21. I've known dogs do that in snow too. I think it's a "if it's cold (snow), it will help keep you warm (like an igloo) and if it's warm, digging a bed into the sand will help keep you cool" thing. Did she turn round and round and round and round before finally laying in the hole? Whatever, - Clever dog!
  22. Maybe the terrier world will end up splitting - undocked workers that don't do earth work (but do show) and docked earth-working dogs. That would be interesting - time will tell though.
