  1. Well done. Its a fantastic feeling when they prove to you that they can do all those things you've wished for this past few months. The retrieve will come. I'm not sore on mine when they want to hold on to it. I dispatch it quickly and then give it back to let them carry it a while. As long as they don't run off with it, still squeaking, around the field a couple of times I'm happy. Thats a great slip/return ratio. dave
  2. My wife has a dobe who is currently 7 months. Massive prey drive, good nose and tries her hardest to match my whippets. They have been known to catch the odd rabbits but I'm sure it'll be squatters and myxi's. She comes from great working stock (guard/obedience/tracking) but although she's nimble enough, for a dobermann, compared to a running dog she turns and accelerates like a battleship. Her gait and movement is very powerful but to use an analogy, the power and torque is all low down the range wheras my whippets have the power/acceleration/speed throughout. She is a real honey
  3. Sounds like your wanting a brood bitch. If not, why must it be a blue bitch, she doesn't know what colour she is? Too many amature people playing the breeding game and too many litters being produced with no potential and with too many faults. Go and try buying yourself a decent bitch from a reputable breeder or try and get one with good working potential from a decent working background with the same request as above and I think you'll be told where to go. Dave
  4. Cheers Graham, I've saved that for reading when I'm not on holiday, sitting on my ass and wanting to do nothing. LOL Dave
  5. My dogs eat droppings when they are out mooching so no matter how I feed, worms are always an issue. I currently deworm them every 6 weeks but within a couple of days of that I'm already thinking 'they'll need worming soon'. I haven't noticed any worms or cysts in their stools since puppyhood although that doesn't mean they have'nt had them or aren't about to be infested. Dave
  6. Could be right. Its what I do but I would take advice if someone knew better. Dave
  7. I gut (paunch) and freeze the rabbit for 3 weeks. I defrost overnight and they get the whole rabbit, coat, head included. Dave
  8. Deal. I've PM'd you for the details and how to send the cash.
  9. My offer is still on (under) the table. Either way, have a bump on me. Dave
  10. It also depends on what reason the steroids are intended. My whippet dog is on prescribed steroids (prednesolone) as he has autoimmune disease. This was inherited through heavy line breeding. It causes his body to not recognise the proteins on the surface of his red blood cells as friendly proteins. His white blood cells attack his red blood cells thinking they are viruses and he would die without the steroids. They are not anabolic steriods nor do they enhance his performance or build body mass. All the do is surpress his immune system so it doesn't attack him. He's a great
  11. The fawn bitch i'm running at the moment has stamina to burn, she recovers very quick after good long runs and is ready for her morning walk at 6am after a good nights lamping. I put this down to keeping her fit and on a good quality diet. My philosophy is you only get out of a dog what you put in. I feed mine a little in the morning after a good nights lamping (she gets a lb of raw lamb) after her morning walk. Cold doesn't seem to bother her if i've got a lead in my hand come rain or shine she's wanting to be out. Whippets do seem to lose condition when worked hard, but if you feed a good
  12. Thats a beautiful strong looking dog Ribb. Dave
  13. I'll add my ten pence worth robert. A strong 'type' whippet shouldn't exist IMO. A whippet type should merely be a true to conformation whippet, nothing else. However, a strong whippet does exist. There are a few lines that spring to mind but the ones mentioned are not necessarily in keeping with your question. I have seen some very game, very fast MB dogs, but a few quite small ones with the hearts of lions. I have also seen some big strong, great looking whippets with the hearts of mice. Your Prince is an example of a strong whippet. My Merlin might have been if he managed
  14. Try clicking on this link to his page on the champdogs website. Then click guided search, then hound group category, scroll down to whippet, click on breeders and scroll down again to click on Fallswater. Fallswater
  15. Good luck in getting a good home for her mate. My wife has a young dobermann bitch. They really are a fantastic breed. She gets on well with my 4 whippets but has taught them all she knows about playing rough. Dave
  16. You could also try Noel Sherry of Fallswater Kennels in Kilkenny. He also breeds a great working line IKC registered. He does a lot of work with Matt and his kennels and contact is on Champdogs under Fallswater. Dave
  17. I'll vouch for this dog as i've seen it out in the field and at home. It is well mannered, obedient and a real credit to its current owner. It is certainly not a slouch on the rabbits. I didn't get to see it nail a fox but it has come close (not the dog's fault) and it looks highly capable. Dave
  18. Hi, I'm a member of a couple of whippet forums. I have two dog and one bitch whippets who I have just started working. The dogs have anyway as the bitch is a rescue pet. I joined this forum as I was searching for instructions on how to build a ferret locator and my search engine took me to this forum. Whilst I'm a member I thought I would widen my knowledge of hunting techniques and views. I hope to add from my experiences. Now to find those instructions. Dave
