  1. Anything by Richard Jeffries (The Gamekeeper at home/The amatuer poacher ) is worth a read, he was one of the few Authors i could name who seems to subconsiously generate reader interest in such a way that you can readily pick up where you left off. Henry David Theroux's book Walden is also a good read but maybe a little repetative at times, Theroux only gained true acceptance as an author long after his death, having spent many years unpublished. And of course theres Colin Willock, whos bio on the great Kenzie in particular is a firm favourite too. all the best fin and fur
  2. This whole event makes a mockery of the Judicial system, and not just in Scotland either as the trial was originally held in Europe.. There has always been some doubt as to whether this man was indeed responsible for the Lockerbie disaster, hence his continual appeal of innocence. Now it appears that in dropping his appeal (and therefore accepting that he is guilty of a crime that he may very well not have comitted) he has speeded up the process of his release on compassionate grounds in order to die with his family. It almost seems as if a deal has been done, take the wrap, all t

  4. Excellent, its days like this that seek to remind us all why we go fishing. The Tyne does seem to be producing some good fish these days all the best fin and fur
  5. True indeed the Chub are excellent sport on the fly, and the smaller ones do seem to scrap the hardest. You are doing well as i have only managed 3 chub so far this season, mind you the biggest was a 3lber. Its good to see that the Taff has recovered in the last few decades to become a river that will support such a healthy Grayling population, who have to be amongst the fussiest fish when it comes to water quality. I had a bit of a groundhog day on the little Avon yesterday evening, catching six grayling and a solitary brownie again. all the best fin and fur
  6. These sort of people need to be behind bars, they care nothing for animals and even less for the laws that most decent people live by
  7. Does he have any photos of the dogs ? The only reason that i ask is that as the members of this forum seem to cover a wide geographical base then maybe we can all keep a lookout at the various shows etc that we attend for any dogs that have been stolen and reported to the forum. In fact i would suggest that it would be a good idea if we had a seperate section for stolen dogs, which members can view if they have suspicions about dogs for sale, or dogs being touted around the shows etc. Whilst there are many excellent organisations that do this sort of thing for pets, i feel that if
  8. The previous suggestion regarding the Stainless steel (or possibly aluminium ?) soap is a good one. Years back i worked for a company who were less that generous when paying their staff a decent salary and many had second jobs to make ends meet. One of the guys there worked evenings on the fish counter (at sainsburys i think), so he was handling fish for a six hour shift. As you can imagine his missue wasn't best pleased about the smell of his hands on weekdays and those metal soaps had just come out, so he bought one and it worked a treat, if it can work for someone who is up to h
  9. There seems to be a lot of grayling about at the moment on most rivers where they are present as a species but in many cases are usually dominated by a trout population. I took six grayling from the little avon yesterday evening along with a solitary brown trout, with the trout giving the best fight pound for pound. roll on winter, when the grayling will be real tough scrappers. all the best fin and fur
  10. Its a real shame that there are people like this in the world, i wonder if they would laugh when the boots on the other foot ? My experience is that these muppets are still in the minority, there are many good and decent people out there who would lend a hand and help out in such circumstances, however there are people out there who are less than caring. I remember a few years back having a bad fall from my mountain bike on a very remote country road, there were bits of bike all over the place and the car driver who was behind me at the time just swung out to overtake me as i lay in the r

  15. Is that a single handed trout rod as opposed to a small salmon double hander ?, the lochmors have a good reputation i am guessing its a 3 piece #7wt which will be ideal as a boat rod however at that length i would not consider it as a shore rod
  16. I think it is quite plausable that big cats have established themselves in the UK countryside. Increasing legistlation concerning the keeping of dangerous animals has probably resulted in a few irresponsible owners of captive big cats setting them free rather than face up to either increasing costs/restrictions or having to see their animals put down. Couple this with climatic changes and it is possible to see how a wild animal from a warmer climate could now survive quite easily in the UK.
  17. When they ask you how much you weigh, whatever you do don't be tempted to tell porkies. All the best, hope you enjoy it fin and fur
  18. Thats a nice looking Knife you have there, true enough tool (or most carbon) steels will require more attention but will as you say pay you back with an edge that stays sharper for longer. Glad to see you have gone for a drop point design too, it never fails to amaze me how many people use a clip point for gralloching and are surprised when the blades point knicks the animals bladder or other internal organ, doubtless why many clip points come with a blood channel / cutout in the blade. Nice knife all the best fin and fur
  19. What 'bout slash or Hendrix????? Hendrix, how could any mere mortal ever measure up to his genius ? He even had the rock demigod Clapton quaking in his boots during his first London performance, the guy is legend. Best band though has to be the Ramones. A unique sound, often copied never equalled.
  20. I don't think that the problem here lies with peoples understanding of the law (unless you happen to be the law that is), probably more so with the random manner in which that law is enforced by the Police and the judicial system in this country. all the best fin and fur

  22. I have been training my dog with a starter pistol and long blanks on a public field. Someone complained (as they always do) luckiley though they complained at a parish council meeting and the lovely little old lady councillor with a filthy mouth who was telling me about it called the guy who complained a complete drama pr1ck :clapper: . I offered to attend the next meeting to explain that I wasn't doing anything wrong. Got home and made a phone call to the lancashire constab firearms dept, he confirmed that firing a bright orange pistol cap gun away from houses with a dog at heel and with se
  23. Some good and some funny advice on here so far. could i also suggest that you invest in a bright hat / armbands, many beaters will wear a hat thats orange or has an orange band around it. should make you a bit more visable if there are any 'keen' guns in the line-up all the best fin and fur
