  1. Does anyone actually know of anyone actually spreading mixy ? and where would a keeper get a strain of mixy to infect a black rabbit in the first place- from his underground lab or does he get a mixy out of a field then put it with a black rabbit to transfer the disease then go and drop the black rabbit somewhere else (what would be the point), or maybe he goes to the local market and buys a dozen black rabbits infected. i think not, It's as whin say blacks appear more when the population starts getting out of control, thats when mixy spreads, and as for not seeing blacks with mixy well w

  7. It unbeliveable isn't it, . I think it's to many kids and new comers to the sport that haven't got a clue what they're doing. They come on the internet and hear about dogs doing big bags of rabbits on the lamp, or dogs that did (pre ban) 5 out of 5 hares daytime, and think that all they have to do is buy a descent breed dog and then wait a while for it to grow do a bit of the basics (retrieve, jump etc) and thats it. you've got a killing machine to brag to everyone about. And when it doesn't happen rather than knuckle down and put the real hard work in that the proper dog men do,
  8. Hope you have a good night mate, I been out weds, thurs night, and then 4am this morning giving my dog a few runs getting her back up to full fitness, Hope you see more than i have lately, I've seen more keepers than i have rabbits lol, don't think i'm mister popular as i keep spoiling their fox patrol atb smoggy
  9. we had a sheltie on the farm, proper name shetland sheepdog, quiete delicate things, big balls of fluff. but the one we had great prey drive on the chase, lacked killer instinct, would rather pin with front legs, but had a amazing turn of speed for a small dog. we ended up shaving the poor thing as it was alway hunting out hedges and getting tangled up in its fur. we used it as a good bush dog, Not quite what she was breed for as she had top show line in her blood, A cracking little bitch atb smoggy
  10. it's only illegal if you were intentionally hunting them, accidents happen
  11. To me, any individual dog will run faster and longer if fit, there is no dog that runs faster when unfit. But a dog can only uses the make up its born with. I.e a naturally slow dog will run faster when fit, but compared to a lot of dogs will still be slow. a naturally fast dog, may run very quick and be faster than most when unfit, but if it was fit it would run that little faster, Fittness is all about getting the most out of what a individual dog can give.
  12. you can't captive greed red grouse its just not effective enough, the lack of numbers over the past few years, is down to a number of factors, the main one is the poor summers we've had, the wet weather is good for ticks and worms the two biggest killers of grouse chicks, But as any grouse keeper will tell you, getting a good population of red grouse takes some doing, (proberly one of the hardest jobs for any type of keeper) you need the right balance of habitat, with good young heather, waterings, grit piles, etc. predators kept down to a minimum, and a lot of luck with the weather, A
  13. Definetly not a rat, as they don't go for the back of the neck. It would be either stoat or weasel, if only the small have been killed, i would say weasel. One things for sure they'll be back, once they know there's food there. As for stoats and weasels using rat tunnels they definetly will, Ok they won't want to fight then but will use their tunnels atb smoggy
  14. Great sport did it alot myself in the past ,but instead of using a shotgun or pursenet we used a long willow stick six seven foot long and try to locate them in the heather, bracken ,or long grass and give them a smack on the head, but we dont get much snow in the recent years Sounds like an interesting twist , i might have to try that way But i know what you mean about the lack of snow
  15. With the cold weather now here and bits of snow falling around the country, It's got me thinking ahead to when the snow properly comes, and tracing rabbits in the snow. I normally only get one or two mornings a year, when the conditions are just right. ( a new layer of fresh snow which has come just before light, then stopped). And out i go armed with one purse net and my trusty single barrelled 410. out onto the bleak moors, just above the fields, looking for the tracks up into the heather or dead bracken, and on following these tracks to where the rabbit has gone underneath the

  23. Just a quick update, My dog is improving quite well but a long way to go, i think my seasons over all already this year. To tell you the full story, she was out last saturday and had a hard day in the stubble although very knackered was okay. Sunday she was stiff (to be expected) but by night was fine. Monday morning wife went to stroke her on her bed, big yowl out and wouldn't move, left her a while but when she tried to get up she was in alot of pain, but once she was up was not to bad. Took her to the vets they give her pain killers said it could be a problem either with
