  1. Whover came up with the term "make the grade" where lurchers are concerned should have been shot. Very easy to be the hard man.... But it takes a bit of effort to get the goods out of a dog. Too much of this get rid attitude for my liking on this web site, seems to be a common trend FFS. If you don't think your dog is not good enough for the Lurcher gene pool, then don't breed from it. If you wont keep the fecker, then get it spayed/nads off and find it a good home.......if you can do these basic cos your too tight or evil minded, then you really aren't fit to keep animals. Chr
  2. Hey up, did you use a dog called Typ or Gyp over a black and white greyhound bitch about 9 years ago? If so, I had one of your pups......
  3. Most lurchers can learn the night time trade. They don't have to find their quarry, your lamp and hunters eye does that for them..... Make them work and hunt daytime and it exposes a dog to a much wider range of skill sets that not all dogs posses...... or are not allowed to develop If you believe a dog learning to hunt up day time makes a lamping dog hunt on, then you need to have a think about how good your recall is......simple as that And experienced dog will learn the differnce between day and night work, but they will need exposure until they understand the difference
  4. Real nice looking back at the dogs of old and dreaming....... Unfortunately, there is very little these dogs of old can bring to the table in the days of now. Having spent too many years dreaming and wondering, I've come to the conclusion that it's better to keep one eye proper focused on what you have, and the other on looking forward. Legends are easily glorified and make for good pub talk, or fanciful pen scribble, which makes them that bit harder for the dogs of today to hold equal ground against. Truth is, there are probably a whole heap of Heros out there now, and these are
  5. Not some other means of getting folk to stick their hands in their pocket in order to be the best hunters! What a commercial game this is now days.......Don't believe the hype hey!
  6. Frankel, that's one nice Lurcher you mate has
  7. Nice do lads, I like it when dogs and men similar do good hard graft. It's not rewarding when rabbits come too easy Bet that ole gate breathed a sigh of relief at just 29. Best you get some kin of gate insurance, as I am sure one day you will have it off it's hinges!
  8. Busy with a recently expanded family, but well non the less. If you fancy a hand ferreting any time soon, let me know
  9. Thanks D, hope it continues as the months roll by. I trust your keeping well???
  10. Does that ginger bitch cause much trouble? Looks full of it!
  11. Very enjoyable......all the better for the young one not messing up as some do..... I see you guys are certainly notching up the numbers at night, been ferreting the dales much?
  12. Prefere light coloured, albino or sandy. Will travel local and into Cornwall etc Good sized Jill or medium to large hob ideal. Please get in touch. Thanks
  13. It's a nice size for the rabbiting game. I have yet to see in the flesh any of her litter mates, am sure I will see some of them at some point a folks paths cross. Like you say, the seasons ahead look promising
  14. Had a kind invite from my curly haired mate to go give him a hand on his hedges. Took Roxy as i have been gagging to get her out with the ferts, and at 10 months of age, she is more than ready She has been once previous in Sept, but it was a hot day and after a few bolts on that day, I was ready to go home, so in reality, she has seen very little of the ferreting game. Anyway, it was one long hedge, as the always are, ...me on one side with Roxy, Ivan on the other with his two. His fawn bitch Kushti has really settled into the ferreting game. Not an intense worker like the collie cros
  15. Theres a pair of broken merles......ugly critters!
  16. Arrived this morning..... Now need to convince the wife I should be allowed to sneak a peak before Christmas day..... Stubborn ole mule!
  17. I've enjoyed reading most of this thread. Never tire of looking at the various old pics of Bulpa and Co..... One things for sure, when I am asked about what collie grey studs are worth keeping an eye on.....nothing jumps out at me, I do however recommend folk get up to speed with the Don. .....ugly as sin, but certainly seems to have the right minerals I think more and more that straight collie grey half crosses have a job to compete when compared to a decent running dog type Lurcher X collie Hey TOMO....... Get that Don over that Tara hey ...... Boost the herding bl
  18. Good do fellas. Valuable experience for the young dogs. I know folk say it ain't about numbers......but feck me it is good for learning off! TOMO, true gent
  19. It's good sense, but perhaps not essential. It's very difficult to get an honest opinion from many owners on what constitutes working stock.....a lot of folk make good claims, but are perhaps not always breeding good stuff....do you often take the word off a stranger selling his goods? Seeing the parents working counts for a lot..... Putting the time and effort into your pup probably counts for more This one came from none workers......no Hancock......just a random bred litter to get some Merle fashion cash..... His a handy little dog though, got more juice in the tank t
  20. TOMO and team poachers..... Looks like you had a goodun, you must be getting old though to stop short of the ton, besides, a nights work hung on a gate for a daytime pic would look nice and smart Andy, sorry to hear about Jack. Glad he is still doing you proud
  21. I don't weigh mine to monitor a working weight, but tend to keep a mental note /assessment f how they look, versus how they perform and adjust their food accordingly. I alway run my hands over the dogs daily and have a good feel of their overall weight and form, helps to confirm what I am seeing with the eye. One of mine runs a lot faster with a few pounds off him, however, after a full shift on the beam, his weight loss leaves him too light for my liking and as a result for the last two seasons I have kept him a little heavier. The speed loss is evident, but he just looks that better
  22. Cheers for the comments. Flyn does ok, hope the pups settles over the next few months and turns out to be a reliable hand. Don't see any reason so far why she won't
  23. Thanks, Info use an SLR, i bought it second have of eBay for £250 6 years ago. It's a very basic Canon Rebel 300. I recond you could pick a second hand one up for around £100. I have never updated it, despite being tempted for new toys, as I bash it about when in the field, it gets covered in mud, dust and water and if it were a newer that cost more ££££££, I'd be worrying more about the camera than concentrating on the dogs. 15 is my fav
