  1. I have since splashed out on a Falcon 4.5-18x56 which is excellent. Clear optics, decent enough reticle (though a bit cluttered, I have the SP20) and illumination. Not to mention repeatable adjustments. I know scopes should do this anyway but they never seem to, for me, the ability to dial correction today, based on a target shot 2 days ago, and then shoot a canada goose in the neck at 120 yards (thus preserving the carcass)... well, it's nothing short of a revelation to be honest.
  2. What's it to be used with? Hawke seem to be hit and miss. I have a Reflex 4-12x50 and it's great, for the money. Have heard good things about the nite-eye but not looked at it myself. Depending on the proposed application there may be better choices to be had...
  3. These remington things do seem to be able to shoot! That said, my Howa does a similar size of group with 50gr American Eagle (a bit bigger, but not much at all) and my RWS shoots very tight groups with 85gr HP Federal (which i don't use as it's £1.20 a bang and my 40p Prvi will stop a deer no worries). But Remington has a reputation for accuracy and it's deserved. Oh, does yours have the XMark trigger or have you added an aftermarket one? I am a big fan of their new trigger, couldn't want much better on a hunting rifle.
  4. HMR or 22LR, always have both. Very easy to justify too, HMR = long range and less wind-affected but loud. 22LR f***ing quiet, but close range only.
  5. You must have a Quad and only the WMR barrel? I do have a quad, in HMR. I was going to get a WMR barrel for it, but I took it off at the last variation in favour of a 308 rifle. They left the ammo...
  6. Very tidy. What calibre is the rifle in question? Edit : Missed the question on my rifle, it's a Remington SPS Tactical in 223, fed with the 40gr Federals this time round (but not long term because though I love tight groups the bank manager doesn't like bunny bashing at a quid a bang!). Just lightened the trigger, too, since that group so can't wait to get back out with it.
  7. HMR holding is 300/250, 22LR is 1000/500, 223 1200/100. And I have 22WMR too, but I don't have one, and I don't have a slot for one... Hmm....
  8. OK then. The group in question is the single-hole bit, the others on there were from the shitty Wolf ammo - we were comparing the Federal 40gr stuff with the crappy Wolf. Deker didn't believe quite how badly my rifle shoots the Wolf stuff. Edit: forgot to say, that's a 5-shot group. Don't get me wrong, I'm well impressed with your two, I suspect that group was a fluke, given that it was dark etc, but needless to say I'm pretty pleased with it, and impressed with my new rifle, which till that point was billed as a POS that can't hit a barn door at 3 feet! Here we are:
  9. Yep, although you asked about the 77/22 which is a very different beast... Rotary mag bit is the same though, they are shared. Personally I think it's a great idea, mine has been reliable and means that you get 10 shots and there is no protrusion right where my hand goes.
  10. 80/60 is very low indeed, I felt hard done by when I got 120/100 for the 22-250. 250/200 now and that seems OK for the 243. My 308 holding is 600/500 but that's meant for range work. And since I don't have a 308 yet it's irrelevant anyway ..
  11. Going back to the original question, 223 will drop a fox comfortably to 500 yards, BUT you have to be able to put the bullet into the fox. So 300 is on with the right scope and a bit of practice. 350 maybe and 400 if you really work at it. If you want to go further than that, 243 is your tool of choice as with 55gr ammo it shoots seriously flat and is less wind-affected than the 40gr a 22-250 uses to achieve the velocity. Oh, and there's that much grunt you can hit him in the arse and he's still done for...
  12. Good shooting, although I did shoot one just as tight last night nearly in the dark :-P (witnessed by Deker)
  13. My SPS tactical hates my Wolf But I got some 40gr Federal and it's putting them into a thumbnail group at 100 yards, well happy with that, esp since the group was at 9.40 last night without a lamp...
  14. OK, I have never heard of or seen what you guys call a 'semi open' ticket. AFAIK there are two types - open and closed. Closed says 'land deemed suitable by the chief officer of police' and open just has 'land over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot'.
  15. Well not really... you don't just wake up one morning and think "I know, I want a 22 today, let's buy a Ruger". You think, I want a rifle to kill rabbits, or a rifle to shoot targets, or a blend, or I want a lightweight rifle, or I want the most accurate rifle in the world. Ad infinitum, but there must be some reasoning in there somewhere! However, my opinion of the Ruger 77/22 stays the same anyway, it's pretty accurate and pretty reliable, but too expensive for what it is. A solid rifle, but a Quad is more accurate and a CZ better value, and they're both considerably cheaper. But
  16. 10/22 - good fun 77/22 - good, serious rifle.
  17. i was warned off the quad in 22LR for that very reason. Got it in 17HMR only and a CZ for 22, and works a charm.
  18. Agreed. If your doing a 'job' then you use the best tool for the job but if it's for the stalk then an air rifle can be ace. However i can't wait till i hear the conversation. " So did you get much when you were out?" Yeah got 1 rabbit. I stalked right up to it. I must have gotten to about 100 yards from it." That's when we've lost all reality of bushcraft and stalking ability. DunK Shot on many cricket pitches lately?
  19. I'll second that, I was going to go into more details but it's very succinctly put. There's very little space these days for a supersonic 22LR, HMR is so much better in every way with roughly the same level of noise.
  20. I do chuckle when people moan about the price of 17HMR ammo. Yes, it's expensive compared to 22LR but it's cheap as chips next to most centrefire ammo. My 223 is cheaper at 18p a bang, but the ammo in question is rubbish whereas the HMR ammo shoots very well. It's expensive for target bashing sure, but for living targets it's still good going.
  21. Range finders are not just used on deer...
  22. That seems pretty mad to me! What crisis brought that regulation in?
  23. I have some, they're good. Much lighter than the shotgun ones and just as effective (well, near as dammit). And they can be hung round your neck when not in use too.
