  1. I would, by the sounds of things he's all tooled up and ready to go with the new DM80S HMR moderator - I had a mail from him when I asked about changing my Hornet mod to 223.
  2. Cheers for the compliments folks, always brightens the day I would have thought that scope would be purely hunting use, because the one thing I forgot to say is that air rifle users complicate things because they need parallax set to 35 or so yards. Whereas firearms need more like 100 yards. if you make a scope with AO, you can do both markets, reducing costs and increasing brand awareness. Also, while parallax adjustment isn't meant to be used for focus, some need it to be. Deker is a good example
  3. Nightmare! Tell you what, if we get out again this week you bring the 223 and I'll bring the HMR
  4. Yeah that bunny rabbit was rather mullered. I have fixed my lamp this evening, just need some gaffa tape to hold it all in place now and job done. Crappy Lightforce cigar plug is gone Also, Deker, that fuse you let me have, it's been modified a touch and now completes the circuit on my rangefinder, so that's back in action and saving me a fortune. The fuse is held in place with ... blu-tack and sticky tape. Seems secure enough though Look forward to collecting my body bag
  5. Out with Deker last night on one of my permissions, had a good evening. When we got there, saw a roe buck on the approach in the car. He had the good grace to stay put while I got the rifle out, so 2 minutes later we were stringing him up in a tree following my headshot. It was very dark by the time we were done, got the lamping gear out, and discovered my lamp (#3) was dead. ANOTHER ONE! I wasn't very happy but found the fault PDQ this time - dodgy soldering had come loose in the cigar plug. I tried to fix it (including fixing the blown fuse with one of Deker's HMR cases - that bit wo
  6. OK, let's put this to bed. Parallax is NOT just focus. It is to do with putting the image on the same focal plane as the reticle. If the image is perfectly parallaxed, it will be sharp, and if you move your head, the perceived POI (i.e. where you see the crosshair on the target) will not change. If it's a bit off, you can see movement to the POI and potentially this WILL have an effect when zeroing. A lot off, and it's all blurry. That's why there's two adjustments - focus, and parallax. Now, in practice with a CF, 100 yard parallax is fine because the margin of error on a hunt
  7. Technically you can use your 17HMR on foxes without a variation. Although the firearms laws differentiate, the term 'vermin' is widely held to include fox - no police force in the land will take you to court over it, and any decent lawyer could win should you find someone stupid enough to take you to court. If you really don't want a centrefire for it, don't bother - just shoot foxy with the 17HMR! 22WMR should be granted for fox, it frequently is AFAIK.
  8. dixy, I am interested because I am looking at WMR for foxing/rabbiting duties. HMR can do the job at longer ranges but it's so small that beyond 120-odd there's just no real effect when the bullet arrives. WMR should I think give 150 so I was sorta hoping that was your sensible range!! 100 yards is fine with any rimfire so long as the shot is reasonably well placed. Even the 22 LR puts holes in foxes (and quite large ones too) so you just need to make sure the hole is in the right place. The HMR's problem is that as it loses velocity, it seems that the plastic tip doesn't work too well
  9. Yep, save up! In all honesty £250 isn't going to get you much. There was a CZ 527 Lux s/h for that money over at Minsterley Ranges a while back. If it shoots, that'd probably fit the bill.
  10. Out for bits and bobs from time to time. I've shot most of the foxes it seems, just rabbits at the moment. Darker evenings have put the brakes on the deer And my 243 has been playing up this week, I think it needed a really good scrub - I cleaned it with patches and solvents after use at Bisley, came up clean very quick - too quick I think, I got the phosphor bronze on it yesterday and got a whole load more shite out. Fingers crossed that does the trick!
  11. New mod is noisier than the S5 on the 243, my ears ring after a couple of shots. S5 is borderline, in that if I bang away all afternoon it's not great. Think it will be OK on the 223, and it sure is light. Closest weight-wise is the DM80 Hornet mod I have. It's definitely lighter than the Wildcat.
  12. I sent the picture to Jackson Rifles, who said it should be fine, if I wanted the front tidying up then to send it to them and they would do so FOC. Good service IMHO, and I tested the moderator this evening and it's fine. Groups no worse than the new moderator, or without a mod at all. New mod lighter so going on my 223, hopefully all is now well!
  13. what happened to your S5 logic they seen indestructible ?? It had too close an encounter with 3 243 bullets Clipped the end of it and it's not happy now.
  14. Personally I'd get the ASE Jet Z, I know it's lots more money, but the sound moderation is excellent and it's not heavy either. Atec do a compact modular moderator which is also worth a look. Had a good look at one at the CLA, you can remove some of the baffles when used with a smaller calibre, since you don't absolutely need them. Fully assembled, it's Jet-Z size, but you can make it very dinky indeed.
  15. I'd rather have an Atec, or ASE personally, but I do have a Wildcat and it's not bad. Just not great
  16. ASE S5. They were with ballistic tip ammo, no rules against expanding at Bisley
  17. Agreed, I'd take the WMR every time over the Mach2. I know mach2 is cheaper, but it's hassle finding ammo and it's not that much extra really...
  18. T8 is a good mod, jackson rifles should be able to help you there. ASE make better mods IMHO, though my S5 is knackered. I got a new moderator from Country Pursuits of Rickmansworth, but AFAIK it's their own moderator so a bit of a trip. Not used it yet, raining... Wildcat Predators are OK also. They're all overpriced though - AFAIK the margin is something like 120%...
  19. You know, I love Lightforce, my 170 is great. But Deker has a Tracer Max, mine must be faulty because his lights up about as well as the Lightforce 140 and is much cheaper. One to think about, but I like my 170
  20. I didn't hear a thing as I had muffs on because of the noisy buggers next door with their muzzle brakes on! The mod was a bit loose, it must have been a fraction and then worked itself looser
  21. OK, Out at Bisley today, shots wandered and then went off the page completely. Was zeroing so wasn't alarmed initially, after they left the target I checked the mod and it was loose. Got home and it looks like this: If this were the barrel crown I know I'm screwed. But, given the much slower moving gas out of the front of a moderator, how much will this throw accuracy? It had certainly seemed to settle down again, but I've seen the rifle do better in the past. Am I screwed? Do I need a new mod? I'm guessing yes, but hopefully I can get away with it!
  22. A quick butcher's on Opticswarehouse shows a Nikon that can be had for your £150. Apart from that, I say get another £30 or £40 together because then you're looking at more Nikons, Bushnell Elite 3200 or Leupold VX-I. All of which will be a LOT better than the cheap Chinese stuff. If you can't stretch, then save your money and get a JSR, optics are as good as anything for £150, and the price is half that Good luck I know from experience that choosing a scope without looking at it first is very very hard. Opticswarehouse have been good with my returns
  23. They're OK, Mauser-based design. Nothing wrong with it but better rifles are out there. A new Howa wouldn't be much more and I'd back that to have a better trigger and shoot straighter.
