Thanks Snap.

Too little sense, rather than too much money I got a price of £650 for the Savage, worth consideration. I might head off and have a look at the SPS tactical tomorrow so I know if I need to go Tikka/Savage/RWS (i.e. really light) to get this sorted.

it's in 223. What is an entry level rifle? For me I don't think there's any such thing really, I want something that shoots straight with the ammo I use and is light to carry around. Tikka does that but they fart about with metric threads for the moderator, and the lite is so light in the back that you need the short barrel to get the balance right...

Just wondering, what twist do I need for 69gr or 77gr ammo? AFAIK 69gr is OK in 1:9, but I would have thought I would need something quicker for 77gr? Cheers muchly

Hi folks, just a quick one I came across a Savage 16FSS in their catalogue, looks pretty good and like it would fit the bill for me - screwcut 1/2UNF, lightweight, synthetic/stainless and 22" barrel. Rang Garlands and the RRP is £720 which seems steep. Are these any good? Does anyone have one? How does it fare against a Tikka T3, for example? Cheers muchly

there trying to make it legal for 22 mate but 22 centrefires that is 222,223and the 22/250 you can shoot cwd and muntjac here with them but not roe if you have it on ticket. yet in scotland the can shoot the above and roe with 22 centrefires as long as you use the right bullets im surprized they didnt add roe here for 22 centrefire rifles when they changed the law to use them here for cwd and muntjac does anyone no why they didnt ??? Roe WAS included up until the final reading of the Deer Act Amendment order 2007 when a question was asked about .22 CF's suitability for Roe.

I don't think he is doing the fullbore ones any more, not sure on the rimfire version I'm afraid.

First thought, you got out of season AND night permission?

Sadly I opened the front door and slung the corpse in the hedge....

I'd have a chocolate lab if I could, house is too small and t'other half won't let me 'til the cat's dead

Yes

I've tried many many rimfire moderators over the years on 22LR. I put my Hornet mod on there, a DM80, today mainly for the balance - being a bit heavier it stabilizes the muzzle much better. I was amazed how quiet it was - I shot a rabbit at yards, the first sound I heard was the thump of the bullet, there was nothing else at all. I've had a Sak on there normally, and it's loads quieter. Looks like that moderator will be shared between my rimfires now...

Air pistols can hunt! I have now shot 2 mice in the last week or so that my cat has brought into the house and dropped, alive, in the middle of the night. The first one was right next to me so it wasn't a challenge but I was chuffed with my 2 yard mouse in the dark at 01h00 :)

Deker, your comment made me laugh HMR is fine on a bunny rabbit and eating them after no problem, even with a body shot (you cut round the manky bit!). 243 is a different matter, rabbit soup...
-
Think you might be right there Foxes and vermin... well, depends who you ask. Exceptions are made in firearms law, but in terms of animal classification AFAIK they are vermin.

Heavy barrels are great at the range, work well. Beware sound moderators though. My Howa 223 has a vented laminate stock, I've tried it with and without the moderator. At the range with the mod it gets red hot PDQ and stays that way. Without the moderator on a different day (thus starting from cold) it spent the whole afternoon banging away and was little more than warm. And light barrels do heat up fast, my 243 goes to shit after about 10 quick rounds, needs to cool down. But, as Jamie says, it does so much quicker than the 223 when that's hot.

Which conditions have you got there, every FAC is different.

FAC for target shooting & vermin control??

But... you said you'd been shooting for many years.... -
Centrefire distances are best just learned. Football pitch is, give or take, 100 yards, nice easy one to use. but... rangefinder is best and about a hundred squid. Worth saving for. Also, on your permissions, pace out fields and areas, it's worth more than anything else - once you know those distances you will find your ranging gets much better. Also, remember that with 223, 22-250 et al, 200 yards is pretty much dead flat (3 inches or so, so half a mil on a mil dot scope) so it's easy enough until you start going out a long way.

Fox hunting isn't about killing foxes - they're vermin, who cares how they die so long as it's reasonably humane? Every method has the odd one that has a painful death, be it being run over, shot or chased by the hounds. For me it's all about personal freedom - if I want to chase a fox with a dog and a horse when I could shoot it from a nice warm car, in a FREE society, that's my choice - it's not affecting any other people. For me, when the 'rights' of vermin exceed the importance of freedom, it's a very, very sad day indeed. But, what do we expect from this government? Their controls

Kidd trigger unit, £185. Very very good, beats any trigger I've ever used. Tbh, the only really bad thing about a 10/22 is the trigger...
-
I've seen the Tikkas on there, but they're either not cut or cut M14x1 which is a right pain Gotta decide whether I can be bothered to get one cut because I can't afford a new moderator unless I can get someone to do me a deal... My plan was to go to Adenbourne and have a look at both, the SPS Tactical would be great if the balance and weight are OK. My worry with the Tikka is the balance of the Lite, even with inches of barrel missing. But, yours is pretty good now, just a little bit front heavy, so worth a look. Wait and see I think...
-
The lighter Howas are still 7.4lbs. tbh I think the SPS tactical will handle better because it has a short barrel. I've just put my MTC scope back on the 223, out to zero in a mo. One thing that struck me is that the size and length of barrel of the Howa are a problem, when I add the moderator. Without the moderator I think I could cope with it. My Howa weighs 9 3/8 lbs, so whichever rifle I get will be an improvement. I am also thinking of the CZs still; they are quoted as being lightish - the Varmint Kevlar is 7.5 and would come down with the 4 inches of barrel I would get lopped off

Not sure about, or why, a 5/8 cut!?!? Nothing wrong with it of course but why???? Edgar Bros get these cut in the UK as 1/2 inch, then send out to dealers. So where did 5/8 come from??? If you are interested or concerned about it..... the OLD trigger is grooved to the finger.....the NEW X Mark Pro Trigger (or whatever they call it) is smooth. So it's easy to tell when you pick the gun up which trigger you have. Neither trigger will win any quality awards but the new one is meant to be a distinct improvement, and too be fair, having dry fired it in the dealers a few times it see
