  1. Thanks for that people. I'd rather be accused of under- estimating than exageration and bullterrier's probably right .I should enjoy it for what it is -my biggest roach! Thanks again.
  2. Not massive by some folk's standards but it's my best (andI 've been fishing for over 200 years ),came from a tiny tributary of the Arun, along with an out of season sea-trout and a little parr.I really should electro-fish more often!. Seriously, 2 1/2 lb line & maggot. Trouble was I'd only a pocketfull of tackle and no scales . The roach was 13 3/4 inches long(I cut a bit of string to take home and measure) to the tail-fork. I'm guessing pound and a quarter but a mate reckoned bigger .Anyone any ideas or one of those old-fashioned weight for length tables handy?
  3. Probably not escapees mate. Genetic blips in wildies are not rare.Rabbits are not actually "brown" they only appear so.Look closely and you'll see a mixture of grey, black, white, cream hairs but no proper brown ones. Rabbits born with missing pigment tend to be either white -in which case they stand-out like beacons & tend to be knocked-off by predaters long before they manage to breed and pass on their genes- or black . In the past black wild(feral? ,naturalised? let's not get anoraky about terminology) rabbits were activly encouraged in some stately parks for their novelty value and o

    world record

I think you have hit the nail on the head .Don't think any true hunter would want to be involved. Catch and release would be just as bad -Probably be mass prosecutions under the 1996 protection of Wild animals Act which forbids the doing of " things "to wild animals unless it is an unavoidable part of genuine pest-control.Yes, the antis and their legal advisers would be in heaven and the Courts full of test-caes. I suppose though,a sponsered long-net "knit-in" would be harmless enough.Imagine hundreds of people over the country being sponsered by the foot ,each running up a few yards

If they have been laid -up for a while it is worth taking (carefully ) the circuit board out and giving it a wipe with a cotton-bud dipped in white-spirit or similar. Work it gently into all the crevices under the speaker as well . This removes verdi-gris that builds up on the circuits and spoils the continuity. Worth a try and costs nothing. As for the silly depth indicater stickers that should be on the wheel.Forget em ,simply get a tape measure and scratch your own depth gauge marks on the dial . Good luck

    fox

I snared a grey one ,not a speck of brown in it ,Silver, I suppose you'd call it.I skinned it and was going to keep it but my Boss decided it was something he wanted and kept the skin in his Shoot lodge until the farm collie was accidently shut in there overnight. Result -no more fox skin! A Keeper a few miles away shot one at night about the same time.He said it was a bit wierd as in the beam he could see what appeared to be a fox's shadow but no fox until he realised that the shadow was the fox! Also, on a vermin drive on the extreme edge of this chap's ground we flushed a f
  8. Don't get lured into thinking that to be a "proper" rabbiter you have to actually be fully equipped with every sort of net ,device or dog for all seasons. Plenty of people are happier and more successful concentrating on one style or branch of hunting rather than trying to be an all round jack of all trades . Don't think either that a lurcher is the only type of dog for ferreting. In the past many a family mongrel has proved itself to be worth its weight in gold as a marker and net-driving dog as well as being quick enough to pin any badly netted rabbits before they could escape the
  9. When I was young and inocent of the ways of ferreting I bought six nets from E&M with my school dinner money.Came without pegs. I did'nt realise they had to be pegged down until I saw a picture in The BFFS ferreting booklet. . Believe me ,nets without pegs really do not work very well! As for the "swivel" rings. I'd have thought anything that added needless friction on the draw-cord would be a step backwards. Draw-cords rigged the easy-slip way running through decent rings do it for me but each to his own.
  10. ... or is it a rather small pumpkin in the datura patch? Either way I should probably spend more time weeding Something quite beautifully sinister about Datura . Not a plant to be sniffed at. Or eaten , or smoked, nor dropped in a waterhole .Non of that sillyness.

    Poachers?

Now stop being silly this is a serious subject not a yoke. Egg fetishists , they do exist. My mate went to an egg fetish club, lured a lady home to his love -nest .The girl was shy at first but he coaxed her out of her shell and got his leg ova several times. Before going to sleep he asked her how she'd like her eggs in the morning. .... "Unfertilized", was the reply. Sadly a few days later his "parts" began to itch. Sure enough right on the tip he found a little rash in the shape of a lion.
  12. Is this a retorical question or are you giving the good folks on here advice?? Come on lets have it, What would you do??? Ah yes . YOU have mice in the attic,so really we don't have to do anything !
  13. Like everyone is saying ,traps or poison. You can't really afford to tolerate em as they carry disease ,chew wiring, wreck insulation, nest and wee and poo in all the stuff you have stored up there like suitcases ,kids toy's and Christmas decorations , and if they find their way through the into the larder...."whoopee!" Network of traps every few yards or poison bait stations-again every two or three yards apart around the perimeter and next to the beams.Don't skimp on the poison ,don't let it run -out. Follow instructions about use and safety or have a professional do the work if you ha

  15. cheers Nice sentiments mate but positive thought sdon't make it so. I remember marching through London thinking"how can they not listen to us".................remember how that turned out? Iwas there too (and all the gun ones),got interveiwed by the radio n all and I did'nt swear once.Somehow wish I had let a few blue'ns off now .I t was a done deal, always is a done deal long before the public gets to hear about stuff . Sadly you can't uninvent something .
  16. Traditionally (I'll type this very quietly in case some farmers see it) where rabbiting rights were on offer it was usual to pay for the rights based on 10% of the value of the rabbits expected to be killed.
  17. Luckily I am conversant with the art of using cuttle-fish "bones"as molds to cast silver ornaments and lead fishing weights (I'll post it up one day if it's not been done before.Dead good way of making weights. ) Crucifixes and silver bullets ,no problem.
  18. Apologies if this is old news but it's scary. Just looking for info on some traps and turned up a site called National AntI Snaring Campaign. According to these people Gin traps are causing carnage to wildlife and pets. Not only that Kania 2000 traps are approved by DEFRA for use against woodpeckers! The site also tells it's visitors how to find and recognise traps and is compiling a data base of sporting estates. It also urges people to investigate private woods. I'm sure the "usual suspects " for my area(They give a Sussex PO BOx) are involved. What worries me apart from the general informa
  19. Hello Mackem. Not surprised that there 're loads of web-sites about it.Not that I've looked (Computers are as alien to me as some folk think big cats are). People in this area have kept some fairly exotic stuff (genuine wolf,a lion!) .This was fairly common knowledge , actually saw the wolf myself .God knows what was kept in secret so some scope for escapees. We had red deer in the woods after the 87 storm and I've seen boar over the last two years so no doubt stuff does "leak" out. Puma was caught ,little "big cats" have been shot, trapped ,run over etc but has anyone come across a litter of cu
  20. And here is an example of the reason why there are unlikely to be many if any viable ,long term populatons of Big cats in Britain. Inbreeding. The Iberian lynx is dying out through infertility due to inbreeding ,even with a population of 100 plus the pathetic gene pool held in wildlife breeding programmes. Not saying there ar'nt or hav'nt been cats loose (plenty of reports from my area and I have reasons for believing at least some of em) but breeding populations of cats need to have access to a large gene-pool.
  21. Up until the Pest Act 1954 you could probably have done it legally but the Act not only banned the movement of myxyied rabbits(live or dead) for spreading the disease but made it a duty to kill and control rabbits on your land. Releasing rabbits would not comply with this .
  22. Sorry Kay, i can't really think of a vocalist either......Axel Rose? Brian Johnson? Michael Bauble or whatever he's called.....lol. A young Robert Plant...Graeme Bonnet (Rainbow) Dio (ex Rainbow) all good chanters...Paul Rodgers Paul Rogers With one of them birds from Heart on backing vocals, Brian Downey drumming ,Lemmy on bass (have you noticed he plays it in a rythmy/lead style of his own?) Probably NOT Hank Marvin on lead but he's pretty good and he can walk backwards in circles whilst playing!
  23. Now either you and Paul L are very old or have great taste! Kossof,Ralphs -something very haunting about the Free /Bad Co sound at times. Again Eric Bell ,the Gorham/Robinson partnership when it was on form was distinctive .Moore might have been a better technician but there was something too clinical, too "standard guitar hero poses 1,2 and 3" about his Lizzy stuff. Peter green .I saw him supporting one of the great n famous guitarists a few years back. Mr Great n Famous did'nt miss a note ,brilliant dislplay but, Oh so boring. Cocky sod ended with ",I shall be giving autograghs backstag
  24. Think the 39 Act is the one that allows gassing .Matt the rat might possibly be right about it being hard to find a clause that says "Thou shalt not release" but the general intimation of the various Laws ,Orders and Acts enacted since the long -gone days of the maintained warren system are clearly aimed at rabbit reduction as opposed to rabbit release. Any animal in captivity automatically places a legal responsibility on it's possesser. At what point a live rabbit becomes captive would be open to debate but my guess would be that the status of a rabbit in a flimsy net or dog's mouth might
