never had to suck an egg but how much difference does the depth vary by the collar being to the side rather underneath? an inch perhaps? Y.I.S Leeview ps glad I stuck with the MK1's No it's a lot more than that because the signal is directional - i.e. it is not circular. If the collar is on it's edge the reading will be significantly more than the distance. You need to be at 90 degrees to get the perfect reading - i.e. right above it. Every Mk 3 I've come across has over estimated the depth of dig but once you realise that an indicated 2foot dig is more likely to be 18 inches

Clap trap best present this Christmas
comanche replied to comanche's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Well OTC (or indeed lots of other folk )are better qualified to explain but here goes. You are certainly not a numpty for asking but my explanation may well put me in that class Imagine both halves of the trap covered in fine netting. Then imagine the thing layed out with a piece of bait fixed to the centre of the trap. I've seen these with little treadles not ot unlike the trigger plates of some mousetraps. On a mouse-trap a bar flips over when the bait is touched and hits the mouse but on this bird trap the bar would've flicked over and trapped the bird under the netting. The bird -
On one of the waters near here a warning went out a few years ago because jack-pike had been laying-up under the bank and biting anglers as they rinsed their hands. Apparently it was'nt just an isolated incident .Several people were bitten including one chap who had to have hospital treatment after pulling out a 4pounder that had probably mistaken his splashing fingers for a shoal of playfull little roach!

how did you make a living out of your hobby ?
comanche replied to ferret boy charlie's topic in General Talk
Big problem is that a lot of people think that pest control ,even rural pest control is just about guns ,ferrets ,dogs and traps and that they are going to get paid for basicly going shooting and ferreting . It's a bit like the folk who think that all Keepers do is throw corn out of landrover windows and go shooting a lot. Pest control with ferrets is'nt just about "creaming off" big catches from easy burrows. It is about shifting buns from the places you really don't want to tackle to really knock the breeding nucleus down. That sounds harsh and pessimistic but you are like it o -
Clap trap best present this Christmas

Nice trap Comanche! What size is it?? OTC just had a measure . When the bars are open (as in the picture ) it is 19 inches across. Any info gratefully accepted as while i have a child-like appreciation of such things I'm not a serious collector . I would like to knit some new netting for it and have plenty of spare hemp but what size mesh? Or would you leave it as it is? -
Nowt wrong with second hand stuff, you should see my wardrobe i look quite trendy when i see repeats of the good life on uk gold Know the feeling well. You can't beat a woolly jumper with a bit of provinence . Also as i tend to keep my few "best clothes " for special occasions they don't have a chance to wear-out so at every wedding or funeral I attend I appear like some aging 70's throwback with a hint of moth-balls.

My bestest present this year . Apparently I was like child all day .I did'nt put it down. Nobody (cept the person who gave it to me ) could understand my pleasure at being given a couple of bits of bent metal and a spring.
-
I had a load of second- hand stuff ( sort of thing that turns up at boot fairs n tat sales) given to me. Was I pee'd off? Not a bit! Ok, so my brother gave me an old Tarzan annual for a laugh but he'd also picked up bee-keepers hat from somewhere. See the picture below to see why I was so pleased with my second-hand pressies!

Had a quick look and came up with three cases Ist case involved the pigeon fancier who despite wounding a cat when it was attacking his birds was cleared of any offence (on appeal mind .So it was close.) 2nd involved a retired Major who's house was continually being wrecked by a nasty old Tom-cat that kept creeping in any available gap. The old soldier had his curtains and cushions ripped and pee'd on and he ended up living under siege with his doors and windows shut at all times. He ,after three years of hell, was driven to shoot the cat . He was arrested but a Judge decided that he

Merry Christmas to all those who've put up with my sillyness on this site and been so kind with their help in introducing me to the world of forums and computers .

looks like you both had a good day out. I've a few years to train -up the son-in law and a grandson so that when I'm 70 I can still be sure of a few days out. Failing that my daughter would probably love to get her own back for all the times she was dragged out as a toddler ferreting ,beating and so on. Merry Christmas and good holiday hunting

If the cats are owned by someone they are property hence cannot be destroyed. There is though a legal defence to a Crime or Tort that one acted in a" reasonable manner". A judge or magistrate would have to decide this on the merits of each individual case. Caged poults (but not free-living poults or poults being encouraged to leave a release pen) are measurable property. The owner of a cat that damaged them might still be held liable for Civil damages even if the magistrate agreed that the damage was unavoidable due to the wild nature of the cat. Feral cats are specimens of the dom

Also it was the time of year when the excess or weak livestock that could'nt be fed through until spring were slaughtered .Hence feast time! Yep hijacked by Christians .Easter was the same. The old festival of rebirth ,homage to the spring fertility godess and the sprightly and mystic hare. Christians decided that it was an ideal time to slip in the story of Jesus' rebirth (resurrection) so like it or not the peasants started celebrating Christian icons and the poor old godess Eostre became represented by a choclate egg and the wonderous pagan spirit of the hare became a laughable

A genuine feral cat or one that has been given up as lost (ie abandoned after a reasonable period of searching, presumed gone ,missing ,dead etc )can be humanely killed by approved methods ie cage trapped or shot.It is neither property nor a protected species. A domestic cat can be legally bought ,sold or illegally damaged or destroyed or stolen .It has a measurable value ,hence is property and is protected by law. It is also protected by various animal wellfare laws. One cannot smash-up or dispose of a car found illegally parked on one's land and one equally has no right to damag

Excellent advice fromS 58. Don't let anyone tell you that molecatching is some black art that requires wierd initiation rites or selling your soul to Beezulbub. Watch the video, read a book (free from any library),ask questions and think carefully about the way you set your' traps.Remember you are trying to fool a wild animal on its own ground and kill it cleanly. Have confidence. i caught my first mole after i came across a trap in an old farm-building and without the supposedly essential guiding hand of some ancient and gnarled old Molecatcher I dared to think to myself ,"Hm, I'm goin

Loads of folk think keeping is about drivin bout in a landrover with a sack of corn and a shotgun . Or even better get a high ground job on a grouse moor .You just drive about on a quad with a shotgun and a box of matches ... It is in reallity not like that but instead of dwelling on the facts that it can be a struggle to get started and there are very few available jobs I'll answer your questions as best i can . Part -time or do-it yourself shoots operate at a lower level but let's assume you want to be a Keeper -even a Headkeeper -on a big Shoot. As an Underkeeper starting

Kay you;ve heard of this on other forums ? I know (well I'm fairly convinced) that when there has been laying snow ,even for a few days ,that rabbits can be stimulated into breeding condition . The snow reflects the light hence gives the immpression of longer days . or maybe it'd be worth collating a survey of feeding methods with the incidence of unseasonal seasons. Maybe Wellbeloved uses a source of protein from a hormone rich source? Just a thought.

I wondered where they got the chocolate for Penguin bars
-
Ah, so the penguin was named after the Auk. I live an learn .I would have slept happily with that knowledge but for one thing . You've a copy of the Massive book of Christmas Anoraks?. The Anorakophile 's BIBLE!.. 1844 edition Is it one of the late ones with the tiny gold lettering on the spine that can only be seen through a powerful lens? Only 232 printed ,27 copies of which have the wording set 3thou lower than the others . Or are you a kagoul wearer just trying to wind me up ?
-
Hard to believe you have a jill in season ! Everything is wrong ,the time of year ,light levels etc. Does'nt add up unless you've been stuffing her with hormones under an artificial sun-lamp.Or she is ill in some way. If she really is in season I'd be worried she recieved a scratch or took on a bit of dirt in her "delicatly swollen" area and would not work her . Seriously though, something is'nt right and i'd find out why .
-
Not wishing to admit to being an anorak but I was not aware of this .My Giant book of Useful tips for the Anorak Owner has let me down ! I know there 're pingus off the coast of Africa but northern Pingus ,where ,when .? Are we talking fossil remains .? What were their names?

Mine mostly sleep on me it seems.. Although I had one called Ghandi(a mean fakir he was too) who favoured a bed of nails.
