If you feel the need for your nets to close with less resistance just rig the drawcords to run through the same side of the peg-end ring rather than one each side which seems to be the traditional way.

If you just want something to RUN rabbits then you'll be wasting a collie x talents . They can do so much more !

yeah it is true thats why i always clean the blood off the van and try to pull out the dints So technically if I hit one then I could phone a mate or the wife to come collect it? Not really . It is an offence to remove a carcase(or indeed anything from anyone's land ) without authority. In the case of a road casualty deer permission would in theory be required from the local council or Highways Authority. In real life -certainly in my part of the world and unofficially of course- the Highways Dept consider it a bit of a result if a corpse of something quite large g

Hens go out of lay in preparation for the moult. Left to their own devices they would come back into lay a few weeks later . This gap in production is not acceptable to intensivly commercial farmers and it is more cost effective to clear out the non-layers ,muck out and disinfect the sheds and buy in a new lot of POL hens . These strains have been developed for a short and intense commercial life and are not bred or tested for healthyness into old age unlike the fancier's breeds and backyard types which are expected to last a lot longer . Having said that, many ex c

Purty much guilty I'm afraid because the dog should be under control in a public place. Mind you I don't see many elderly ladies carted off to nick when their pets have a fun run at a squirrel in the local park ...But technically ....

This is my first attempt at posting pics here with Photobucket rather than sizing pictures down to fit . Seems to have worked. My favourite is the last one . I love the look on their little faces !. Ok. Not a damsel .

You swine! Now I'm not clever enough to do that!

How to hunt.Appologies if you took my comments to heart. I was'nt out to belittle but the presentation and your photo requests just smacks so much of the journalists or students who do a bit of googling and feel qualified to write essays on a subject that demands deeper understanding. To be honest there are a lot more little creases that ruin the bedmaking than just those that have been mentioned. I did'nt doubt the existance of the Windhound or Stephens(a quick google would tell me more than I'll ever need to know about them ) but just how relevent are they to a list of

1988! This would be an O M G moment but text talk is not allowed . My daughter has still has the copy of volume one of the Lurcher journal that you signed for her at a show in Petworth Park . The glue is still holding The old Shooting News was brilliant .Just about anyone could submit an article and it would be printed . Then there would be weeks of 'healthy' debate in the letter page . Thankfully the internet came along and put a stop to that sort of unseemly bickering .

I wrote the above post late at night after a long day at work so I thought it only fair that I re-read it and check out the website again after a night's sleep . Ok . I should have said 'Stephens Cur' (very popular with the Stephens family of somewhere in the Appalachians ..possibly) and 'Silky Windhound ' but sadly nothing I've seen in the cold light of day indicates the need to make any real changes to the original post . School project ?. Vanity website?. Who knows . Its a shame because the computer skills and knowledge seem to be there but the content is dodgy.

Gotta say that the site looks like its been made by someone with an interest in rabbiting but not a lot of experience or knowledge. A lot of the content seems to have been plucked from various sources without any consideration for its relevence and with no real understanding by the collator . The trouble with being a human sponge is that along with every scrap of decent information there is bound to be some duff or inapropriate material. Names such as the 'Stephens Hound','Swift Windhound'(never feed em beans ) probably mean something to someone somewhere .Check-out th

Mole Control.........1952......!
comanche replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yes i understand it is still available.........and as you say cavers like to use it for the light it gives off. I would just wonder if it broke any rules or regulations if it were used against moles...........bound to contravene some act or another for sure. I suppose it would be using a non-approved substance and would certainly render any insurance invalid if used in a professional capacity . I know what you mean though . You just know that some of these old countryman's tips are a load of Billhooks but once in a while one comes to light that seems quite viable and we have to fig -
Mole Control.........1952......!

I think carbide has been put to a few interesting uses. I'm pretty sure that the old BFFS Rabbiting book mentioned using it to bolt rats . My uncle recently bought some as he has restored an old bicycle complete with acetylyne lamps . Caving suppliers sometimes stock it as is still used to provide light underground . -
pheasants for small shoot
comanche replied to liftboy1's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Its true that if there were neighbouring shoots it would be a bit "off" to start luring them onto your patch. You'd probably find the surrounding Keepers less than helpfull whereas if they knew that you were putting even just a few dozen down they would'nt feel aggrieved and would be pleased that there was'nt a sanctuary for vermin in their midst . As Lift boy has made clear though, there are no nearby shoots . If there were it might just be a little more worthwhile setting -up a little pen and releasing a few of his own . In these circumstances there would be an overall benefi -
What sort of mouse is this
comanche replied to hunters glory's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I thinks its colour has just degenerated after death rather than being a colour mutation . We seem to have as many wood(and some yellow necks)mice as house mice in houses round here. Sometimes the species seem to co-exist in the same premises. If you keep finding your live catch traps shut but with no occupant suspect a woodie ! -
pheasants for small shoot
comanche replied to liftboy1's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Its true what Ideation is saying . Fifty acres is a mini-shoot. One fox prowling through or some other disturbance would send your birds scurrying . Ex-layers often seem like the cheap and easy option but they do seem to have "Incredible Journey "tendancies. Which of course is why they are cheap . You could put a few poults in a little pen but even if you make your own feeders and drinkers when you start factoring-in the cost of posts and wire ,and the essential electric fencing the expense starts to become unbalenced with potential results. With the right sort of ground -
can any of the older lads tell me what the lyrics of this song means?
comanche replied to scothunter's topic in General Talk
I think the songwriter was just on form . Probably picked up a grain of an idea or a decent one-liner and rolled with it,adding anything that complemented the slightly laid back and surreal theme . It may or may not have been meant to convey any particular message but it gives the impression of some bizzare ,spaced-out party with a bit of erotic hanky panky thrown in ..... Or is that just me ? Its a bit like Hotel California . What's it about man?. Is it a damning indictment of modern society and greed ?. The Eagles say it means what you want it to . They just cobbled to -
They used to be really common here -especially in my Nan's garden which backed onto the railway-but became quite scarce. They seem to be making a come-back though.

"Do you deal with snakes?". Was the question . Thinking it was another of those situations where a grass- snake had been spotted filching goldfish from a garden pond, or an adder had been tentatively identified by the lady five doors away as it dissappeared into her rockery, I readied my excuses and mentally rehearsed my speach along the lines of ,"How lucky / excellent habitats in your gardens ". No, this sounded like a proper job. Snakey was in sitting room of an upstairs flat . Customer had lost sight of it but had stuffed towels under the doors to confine it to one room . I

I'd knock -up a few more feeders. You don't need to spend money -scrounge some cooking-oil cans or even better some 45 gal drums . Think of the Shoot as big a pin-ball machine .Stick feed-points along the rides,at the crossroads of tracks ,in little clearings ,at the junction of every hedge where it meets the woods and in sunny ,sheltered positions . Every direction a pheasant wanders it should hit a feeder -just like a pin-ball hitting the bars . That way they'll bounce round the woods and not wander off and out of play .Hopefully ..... Hope you get the tractor !. -
Yep. Those rather blurred pictures were from last year when he was about 10 and a half months .He was still in his catch and release stage having not realised that if he didn't keep his mouth shut tight enough during the retrieve the rabbit would wriggle free . He's better now ,thank goodness !. Probably see you about before summer is over

comanche replied to The_Oakster's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Bearing mind that you are not being paid to do this and probably have limited spare time but obviously want to do a good job you don't want this responsability to become a chore . One tip would be to have your corn easily to hand for topping-up the feeders or you'll get bogged down carting feed about the place .Big feeders mean less topping-up or possibly having a series of corn stores made from 45gallon drums or similar near each feeding area with a bucket to hand will mean less lugging of corn in small batches on foot from the farm-yard or less fuel costs and wear and tear if yo
