What sort of mouse is this
comanche replied to hunters glory's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I thinks its colour has just degenerated after death rather than being a colour mutation . We seem to have as many wood(and some yellow necks)mice as house mice in houses round here. Sometimes the species seem to co-exist in the same premises. If you keep finding your live catch traps shut but with no occupant suspect a woodie ! -
pheasants for small shoot
comanche replied to liftboy1's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Its true what Ideation is saying . Fifty acres is a mini-shoot. One fox prowling through or some other disturbance would send your birds scurrying . Ex-layers often seem like the cheap and easy option but they do seem to have "Incredible Journey "tendancies. Which of course is why they are cheap . You could put a few poults in a little pen but even if you make your own feeders and drinkers when you start factoring-in the cost of posts and wire ,and the essential electric fencing the expense starts to become unbalenced with potential results. With the right sort of ground -
can any of the older lads tell me what the lyrics of this song means?
comanche replied to scothunter's topic in General Talk
I think the songwriter was just on form . Probably picked up a grain of an idea or a decent one-liner and rolled with it,adding anything that complemented the slightly laid back and surreal theme . It may or may not have been meant to convey any particular message but it gives the impression of some bizzare ,spaced-out party with a bit of erotic hanky panky thrown in ..... Or is that just me ? Its a bit like Hotel California . What's it about man?. Is it a damning indictment of modern society and greed ?. The Eagles say it means what you want it to . They just cobbled to -
They used to be really common here -especially in my Nan's garden which backed onto the railway-but became quite scarce. They seem to be making a come-back though.

"Do you deal with snakes?". Was the question . Thinking it was another of those situations where a grass- snake had been spotted filching goldfish from a garden pond, or an adder had been tentatively identified by the lady five doors away as it dissappeared into her rockery, I readied my excuses and mentally rehearsed my speach along the lines of ,"How lucky / excellent habitats in your gardens ". No, this sounded like a proper job. Snakey was in sitting room of an upstairs flat . Customer had lost sight of it but had stuffed towels under the doors to confine it to one room . I

Basic Advice Appreciated

I'd knock -up a few more feeders. You don't need to spend money -scrounge some cooking-oil cans or even better some 45 gal drums . Think of the Shoot as big a pin-ball machine .Stick feed-points along the rides,at the crossroads of tracks ,in little clearings ,at the junction of every hedge where it meets the woods and in sunny ,sheltered positions . Every direction a pheasant wanders it should hit a feeder -just like a pin-ball hitting the bars . That way they'll bounce round the woods and not wander off and out of play .Hopefully ..... Hope you get the tractor !. -
Yep. Those rather blurred pictures were from last year when he was about 10 and a half months .He was still in his catch and release stage having not realised that if he didn't keep his mouth shut tight enough during the retrieve the rabbit would wriggle free . He's better now ,thank goodness !. Probably see you about before summer is over

Basic Advice Appreciated
comanche replied to The_Oakster's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Bearing mind that you are not being paid to do this and probably have limited spare time but obviously want to do a good job you don't want this responsability to become a chore . One tip would be to have your corn easily to hand for topping-up the feeders or you'll get bogged down carting feed about the place .Big feeders mean less topping-up or possibly having a series of corn stores made from 45gallon drums or similar near each feeding area with a bucket to hand will mean less lugging of corn in small batches on foot from the farm-yard or less fuel costs and wear and tear if yo -
Are they not related ?.

Love those two. The black band round the nose . Does it increase with each generation ?

Bank Vole Youngsters.........!

That's what happens when you cross a wichetty grub with a baked bean !. Reminds me of when I was a kid and bred pet mice in uncontrollable numbers . Predation took the form of my Mum waiting for me to go to school and then thinning out the pinkies by some means .... Its a neat picture-every bit as interesting as some of the prettier subjects that appear in this section. -

Those wheeled shepherd's huts have something about them . Very Thomas Hardy but probably not as romantic for the poor old guys who used em everyday. They certainly knew a bit about construction and economy with materials . And their woodland husbandry was miles of what we practice today . Strange question -but are you the tyla with an inflatable canoe ?. That i am, i thought i recognised your dog in the other pictures! Small world isnt it? I'm convinced that West Sussex is the centre of the universe and that civilized man evolved in Bognor rather than Africa . Its -
John you have the mini version !. OTC ; my trap is without a counterweight. It seems that there must have been a shortage of lead when it was made . The end of the balence arm has been rolled around a mandrel into a coil which seems to provide enough weight to shut the door .It's not immpossible that the lead has fallen out over the years I suppose but it functions OK without .

Middle grandchild demonstrating the en-suite lavatorial facilities of a Wealden manor house . The little jettied cubicle overhanging on the left hand side of the building is the the toilet . Presumably they put a barrow underneath . -
My grand -children love this place . Its full of rescued old buildings and country artifacts . Fullfilling my school holiday duty of taking them out for the day was a pleasure . Ok, there was a minor incident when my grand-daughter became engaged in a skirmish with an obnoxious little boy at the pondside. This resulted in the mouthy brat getting more than he bargained for from aforementioned grand-daughter and me having to wade out to retrieve his base-ball cap from the pond to placate his parents ... Anyway ,If you like country crafts and old buildings its a great place

In a similar vein . A neat eel trap at the Weald and Downland museum.

And this year's best Birthday present is..... A rat trap. Built along the lines of the classic "Monarch" but without the flat base . It has the look of something French .

Landed in the canoe and posed long enough for a picture .

And if you do kill em you'll get a reputation as someone who can be manipulated into going against your own proffessional instincts....Maybe as someone who is'nt even confident about his own instincts .... Just a step away from being pushed into something dodgy for the sake of not losing a client . You've looked at the problem ,identified it and offered a chemical-free solution .That's good pest control.... Thats what the contractee is paying you for . If they don't trust your judgement or want to take your advice that is up to the customer .Do you need their custom badly enough to ge
