Releasing caught pests?
zig zag wanderer replied to gnipper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I would think that the Pests Act 1954 by its implication and aims would make it illegal to release a trapped rabbit. It may not say so explicitely but I would say its intentions are fairly obvious. Is there a law that says we can't release a rat? - Not that I can think of. would we do so? - No Would it be illegal? - Probably under the PDP 1949 Same principle?? -
Yet More Rabbit Cage Situations
zig zag wanderer replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
You know your rabbit trapping Rolfe. I have a rabbit trapping job on at the moment. I trapped the same garden last year and caught 69 rabbits in cages. The same situation this year but something is getting to the cages before me. Rabbits are being skinned, dismembered, half eaten. In one cage was a skull and eyeballs. others had missing limbs. The cages were hardly damaged but often moved some distance. I think foxes because of the lack of damage to the cages. Badgers or foxes? I don't see a solution. I don't fancy staking the cages as I will get more cage damage. -
More Unusual Places For Rabbit Cages

Rolfe, how did you position then cages; to catch emerging or retreating bunnies? If you catch my drift. -
Rabbit Cage Trapping Variation..!
zig zag wanderer replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Bryan, these are single entry traps. You should be able to use the standard rabbit cage unbaited on the rabbit run in undergrowth. Double entry would have the advantage that they would catch from either direction but if the rabbit was bolting back through cover at speed it might get through the cage before triggering it. -
Rabbit Cage Trapping Variation..!
zig zag wanderer replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I have now found the MAFF document dated May 1985 by A.M. Tittensor of Worplesdon Laboratory. The document describes two methods of rabbit cage trapping; "Large baited cage trapping" and "Small unbaited cage trapping". Both methods were undergoing extensive field trials by MAFF at that time "to determine whether they are a cost-effective, humane method of rabbit control before they can be fully recommended by MAFF". The document then goes on to describe the technique for using the "Large baited cage trap" which we probably all know. Then the "Small unbaited cage trap"; "These traps -
Rabbit Cage Trapping Variation..!
zig zag wanderer replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
This is actually a well established method of catching rabbits by putting unbaited specially developed rabbit cage traps on the runs so that the rabbits blunder into them. It is covered in a document by CSL from years ago, which I have, that also explains the conventional cage trapping method. I think they are double entry run through traps. I can't remember the name of the technique but I will look it up later if someone doesn't discover it first. -
The Big Cheese make all sorts of different traps and they all have one thing in common; They are all CR*P and not fit for purpose.

rabbit control with the snares
zig zag wanderer replied to woodga's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Snares are designed to hold not kill. -
Also, if the holes are in grass the area surrounding the holes will be well grazed and cropped. The holes will normally be closer together than mole hills too.

What animals do you have in mind? The Duffus is not covered by the Spring Traps Approval Order so if it only caught other "small ground vermin" then maybe ?

Neil, If you are a business everyone will expect you to have insurance. If you lamp for sport probably not. What's the difference? I suggest you hit the target and nothing but the target, then you won't need insurance

To John B , two questions ? ?
zig zag wanderer replied to stephen58's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
It wouldn't look like a fox cage for very long that's for sure. It would soon take on the shape of a wild boar. -
Magpie Decoys in Larsens
zig zag wanderer replied to john b's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Often, with birds, if one sex is larger than the other then it's the female. This is certainly true with raptors but not sure with corvids. Can't find any clues in my bird books. I'd go for a yearling, maybe runt of the litter. -
Mirrors in Larsens
zig zag wanderer replied to stephen58's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I disagree John. For me the clue is in one word in the W&C Act; other. "any mirror or other dazzling device". The word other surely implies that the mirror must also be a dazzling device. Once that can be established it's use in a Larsen would be legal????? -
Mirrors in Larsens
zig zag wanderer replied to stephen58's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
This is covered under the W&C Act Part 1 Section 5 (prohibition of certain methods of killing or taking wild birds) c) (vi) any form of artificial lighting or any mirror or other dazzling device; I would say that was pretty clear cut and should allow a mirror in a Larsen trap as it would not be designed to dazzle. -
I can't believe that the weight of a wasp (queen or not) could set off a trap with the gin type spring and treadle design - Sorry.

Still interested in the legal question of the mirror in the Larsen. Anyone else have any opinions other than Matt and me? -

The Edlington Trap Centre. Simply the best. -
Mirrors in Larsens
zig zag wanderer replied to stephen58's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I can't agree with Matt that a mirror would be illegal under the W&C Act. Surely it's use in a Larsen trap would be to reflect the image of the bird. The W&C Act only outlaws the use of a mirror for dazzling. Therefore the mirror would obviously be legal in a Larsen. -
"why would you want to live trap a stoat?" So that you could relocate it in an area where it is not necessarily a pest. Stoats aren't always vermin but wildlife in the wrong place. I don't have a problem with those who spring trap them but personally I would consider the cage trap and release option.

I only noticed today that a couple of my Kanias have a treadle guide fixed to the top inside of the trap to stop the squirrel pushing it sideways to get past. Does anyone know if these can be purchased for retro fitting or do I have to make some? Just bought some more and no guides on these. Is this a current mod or a discontinued one? I still think they are a good idea as the spring pressure tries to move the treadle to the left and the guide is obviously designed to prevent this happening. If anyone can tell me the source I could do with half a dozen if they are sold seperately.

best way to catch a pheasant
zig zag wanderer replied to markieboi's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Considering I seem to spend most of my time in the van trying NOT to kill pheasants, it would seem that a slight adjustment to that avoidance strategy could result in a good bootfull of game. It's not my personal choice as it's too easy but if your family are hungry ............ I once had one avoid the van with it's last second vertical take off only to be hit by the roof ladder. Killed it and plucked it!
