  1. Not long now till the end of the shoots thats when theres always the bigger bags - I cant wait for this years to get started properly :clapping:
  2. Yes he's a lovely type. I wouldnt take my own lurchers ratting by choice, but mine are much bigger than this one and he is part terrier in any case Not the easiest of places for a terrier to rat, let alone a lurcher
  3. Wasnt the best of places for a lurcher ratting, most of the rats caught were under low bushes in thick undergrowth (rhodendron bushes too) and there were no runners as the rats didnt get chance to escape far. He will come into his own ratting more out in the open - the game crops will be ideal for him He's just a pup btw and doing very well rabbiting, he's a very fast little dog
  4. i dont belive it shes an angel The face of an angel? Shes not even that
  5. Yes jack russells thats your bitch and my what a little bitch she was, someone even commented on it
  6. Well for us in any case and in fact the first time ever for others (our daughter and her boyfriend decided to come with us - Im not holding any rats mind she said ) We had an invite down to deep digs for a spot of ratting today, packed up the car last night and set off very early for the long journey. Last time we visited this place was early April, but today it was still very overgrown, lots of brambles and bracken around to hinder us so it wasnt an easy place for the dogs to catch. Heres a few pics of the day, some are a bit grainy, not the best quality as the light at
  7. Theres a new forum started which isnt affiliated to any of the clubs - log onto there and ask away www.workingplummerterrier.org.uk/plummer/forum
  8. Just got a Mark 3 off Santa and they do take some getting used to. The new collars don't have the "give" that the leather does and you do have to fasten them tightly, what seems to be too tight for them to stay on. Its not so bad for hobs who have a bigger head, but even using them for the first time I found that unless fastened on the last notch they will slip off a jill. I much prefer the leather collar - maybe one day deben will listen to the people who use their equipment, or someone else will come up with something better.
  9. Theres a course run by Newton Rigg in Penrith thats worth considering. Think long and hard about gamekeeping though because a gamekeepers life is not an easy one; its very hard work and long hours with little reward. http://www.gamekeeping.org.uk/
  10. Alright for some I just have the standard 18 - 55 mm Nikon lens that came with my camera that I use for close ups and ratting pics, and a cheap 70 - 300 mm Nikkor that I use for long distance running pics. I'd love a macro lens maybe one day, but its a luxury. el cheapo standard 18 - 55 lens
  11. Thats a much better range isnt it, will have to start saving up some pennies Mine is fine for anything except very bad light. I use the Nikon 18 - 55 mm lens that came with it and have a Nikkor 70 - 300 mm that I bought later, but I would really like an 18 - 200 - that would be much more useful I think.
  12. Tiny Tim what are the ISO settings on the D70? I have a D50 (wish I could upgrade it) but am struggling in low light as the ISO jumps from 800 to 1600 which makes the pics very grainy Don't know if its been improved on the newer D40 or the higher spec Nikon models.
  13. There just werent any rabbits left in that spot yeterday Ian, Mr keeps & my daughters boyfriend went to the same place a couple of weeks ago, it had never been ferreted before and got 22 - left none for me
  14. We had planned a day out ferreting today after a few days doing nothing but eating and drinking entertaining friends and relatives - so we were looking forward to it. But this morning was just horrible weather, wind and rain and really dark We decided to set off in any case, nothing lost if it got too bad and we were rained off. Well it was even windier up in the hills and dark as night in the woods, but we had a go We'd only been in the woods a few minutes when a ferret was put to ground and we had a rabbit in the bag -great start - if only it carried on and anot
  15. I agree with you, the most photogenic of dogs, faces full of character
  16. Went along to my local hunt this morning, a really good turnout, Im sure there are more there each year the hounds
  17. Thats NOT your dog in your avatar...
  18. 2 deer x greys and a beardie grey
  19. Moll I dont know, I wish Id never rejoined again I just cant help myself when I feel injustice is being done but in my defense i didnt start the thread and never would. Ive been got by another yellow buzzer All I will say is I am very passionate about what I feel very strongly about and will defend them most probably to my detriment as for the rest you know it isnt true. Theres nowt wrong with bull x's though - plummers that is Edited to add, Im going to shut up too
  20. Ian Ive only just noticed your post and I do agree with you The rest just isnt worth arguing with/about - each to our own, plummers are for me, not to everyones taste i agree.
  21. Thats not quite what I was meaning Phil, and you know it. What I meant was that if I was looking for a working dog to use over a bitch of mine, then I would look for one of the very few plummers left that do work in preference to a dog of mixed breeding - just to keep what little there is left going a little longer. Yes I have just lined a bitch of mine, and I hadnt planned to be doing it for quite some time yet. But one cannot predict certain things, and the dog I had planned to use is dying, he has only weeks left to live he works to his underground quarry and his genes should
  22. Laphroaig was my favourite until I discovered Caol Ila, try it and see what you think Ive got an old bottle of cask strength Laphroaig in the cabinet, unopened that I bought a few years ago at the distillery - now is that willpower or what
  23. In my opinion its a waste of a good bitch when there are still a few good dogs around to use (agreed there are not many but there are a few). Fine to use a plummer dog over a good bitch of any other breed or type, if you wish to create a 1/2 or 3/4 bred, which appears to be your preference, but to do it the other way round is just plain stupid. I noticed Millet was looking for a plummer bitch to use his dog over in order to keep a pup himself - he could have chosen to use a working bitch of any type or breed, but he is looking for a plummer (wonder why ) it might be rare and diffi
