I know plenty of dogs too hard for their own good and I am sure loads of people on here do too Its not that easy for lads who are fussy about their line to find a decent outcross........good dogs dont grow on trees. When I lived in Ireland we worked hard dogs to all ground game, plenty got smashed to pieces for being too hard, but those hard dogs didn't become jackers. If she's lost interest it's down to how she was worked, once again a fault with the owner!

That's right son, my dogs are pets too, family members. I'm lucky enough that they aint got to put food on the table and I can afford to feed a dog if it doesn't work.

So she was too hard and then a jacker? LOL!!!!!!! The fault here lies with the breeder and not the dog, By your own admission the breeding is too tight and the line has faults. So stop breeding to the line and get new blood in! In 20 years you've managed to get to a point where you're breeding wankers and they are starting to show physical faults. Is that the dogs fault? Nope, it's yours and yours alone. I aint a dipstick, mind you your fell type terriers will end up looking like no recognisable type by the time you've finished!! You don't need to give your dogs love, you need to stop the

Anyway, I'll ask again......................how old and what breed was this terrier that you just killed for jacking?
-
I put plenty time into it ,it jacked because it was a wanker and no its joined the rest of the wankers that havent made my expectations in jacker heaven What breed of terrier? How old was it? Whats breed gotta do with it and was old enough and not its first outing Here's where you show yourself up a bit, breeds got plenty to do with it. Not all terriers get going at the same age. What if it was a Border at a year old? Would it not be different from a Lakie at a year or a Patterdale? So what breed and what age? So stop reading things out of books and taking it as gosp

That must be terrible mate, to have your own line that is very tight and you know so well and yet it throws out wankers. Are they all wankers? being that they're peas in a pod. Maybe you want to loosen your line up a bit and get some fresh blood in there, something with a bit of gameness about it. Let me know I can probably help you out.

I got my first longdog when I was 17. He was a 1st cross deerhound greyhound. A travelling boy gave me him because he'd jacked on a hare the day before and he was "only fit for a bullet!". The dog was 11 months old. He was full of mange and you could see his vertebrae through what was left of his coat. I fed him up, got rid of the mange and took him out with me everyday with catapult or airgun. When he was full grown he was 30" TTS and weighed 100lbs. He caught a fair few bunnies, but on the tighter ground of Mitcham Common never really had a chance to get into his full stride. He never had th

How much time have you put into the dog? Why did it jack? How long have you had it? Will it be up for sale now because it hasn't met your expectations?
-
You'll never get the best out of a dog without putting love into it.

Get a 20, they are very quiet and still have a decent effective range. This is mine, it bowls bunnies over at 35 yards easily and once you get used to it you can hit bolters and flying game.

PM me with best offers.

I'm in West Sussex not far from Crawley and Gatwick. It'd be nice if a little Remi 1100 fell out of a horses jacksie!

Swap my 391 Ulrika 12 gauge for a .410 semi auto or a decent SxS in 28g or 20g. Also wanted Marlin Goose Gun.

I always have a catty with me and my lurchers have helped stop any runners over the years.

Customs can't sieze it but they can charge you duty on it if it's new. It makes it cheaper to buy it here in some cases.

He was hypoglycaemic, like Vin said. He'll only crash and fit once all the glucose is burnt up. That could be over an hour after a hard run. The liver released some stored glucose and he came round, and he was wiped out afterwards. You can buy something called hypostop, which is basically glucose syrup in a syringe with a nozzle instead of a needle. You put the nozzle in the dogs mouth and squeeze in the syrup. you can do it when the dog is unconcious. If the dog hasn't got much glucose stored in it's liver then they don't always come round. -
At the start of the Spring I commented to Rascal-2005 that it'd be a bumper year for bunnies. They were in places that we hadn't seen them for years or even before. Driving down to the coast to go fishing and there'd be all along the verges, we even had the oppurtunity to hang the catty out of the window after them. Now there are none to be seen, from Newhaven to Lingfield, right up to Croydon and Mitcham. I think the mild year has a lot to do with it. Fleas can spread easily if the temperature in October is the same as in the summer.

He's fine mate, doesn't cause me any bother, is good around the house and with the family. He hasn't done anything yet, a couple of shot bunnies retrieved, a few days with the shotgun, and he's coming ferreting on Saturday. It'll be a day of watching and carrying a bunny back to the motor. I don't expect him to get going until the new year and that'll be at an easy pace. He's just 8 months.

Slip the dog, spot on mate. A bit of sense at last.
-
He didn't jack. Don't worry about the time he was running, worry about how he was running during those 4 minutes. A lot of people have fantastically high expectations of what their dogs should do, there must be plenty of disappointed dog owners out there. Perhaps that's why there are lots of dogs for sale, because owners believe the stuff they read on the Internet and think their dogs are sub standard.
-
That was the reason for my question. Bigger longdogs can take a while to mature, I wouldn't write off a deerhound or cross until at least 2 years old and I'd be realistic about it's abilities. They won't catch 100 rabbits at 6 months and shouldn't even be chasing. My deerhound x greyhound isn't going to do anything until he's at least a year. He's not my first of these dogs.
