Well done! I'm just about to take my DSC1 so I hope I'm as fortunate as you on my first outing.

As long as you have a 'good reason' you should be ok. I would have thought the extended range (100 - 200 yards) at which you commonly need to shoot rabbits is a good reason for the HMR on the basis an FAC air is good for about 70 at a push. Saying that there are places I shoot that are only suitable for the FAC air. Remember the FAO will also need to agree that your land is suitable for using the HMR. Good luck. S

Last lot I bought were about £8.50 for a box of 50, but that is getting a discount for buying 1000 at a time. Hornady 17gn ones.

To cloud this even further the BDS state on their website: an "occupier" is taken to be a person with "any right to hunt shoot or take game" on land other than the foreshore a written lease or permission is taken to give a "right" whereas a verbal agreement or invitation probably does not So which is it guys?

I only checked today with BASC to check the legality of any of the younger teenagers in our family using any of my FAC rifles under close supervision. They told me that not only does anybody who borrows any FAC firearm have to be seventeen or older but the lender of the rifle has to be the 'occupier' of the land on which it would be used. Apparently having the shooting rights or just 'permission to shoot' does not qualify you as the occupier. Unfortunately this 'occupier' rule means that I can't legally let anyone shoot my rifles unless I do so on my own land (which isn't really sui

I think your mate Steve had the right idea in the first place! I think i'd have been long gone. S

Just wanted to share the great enjoyment watching a pair of buzzards calling from a tree 30 odd yards away from me this evening whilst I was out after rabbits. Sat and watched them through the scope for ages - just amazing to have the opportunity to see these birds so close-up. Mind you, the fact they were sitting there calling probably explains why there weren't any rabbits in that particular field! Anybody else seen anything recently that has had them sitting there thinking 'Wow'? S

Glad to see the story had the right outcome. Well done!

Great news.... variation comes good

cheers mr L. I do want to stay on the right side of the law, and most other vermin get taken pretty well with the rimmy. Like i said, it is a fox rifle im after, but if im out and drop one with time spare and i only have that one on me, i guess it would do no harm to take a couple of rabbits too! I must admit I tend to shoot rabbits with my 223 all the time - just a bit more expensive and noisy. My choice of whether to take the hmr or 223 is mainly wind dependent but my ticket does say 'fox and vermin' though. Well done on getting an open ticket so soon but it is possible it could be -
I've recommended Scott at http://www.theriflescopestore.com/index.html in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, US before and have no hesitation in doing so again. Easy to deal with, really helpful, scope arrives in a week, saves a fortune so you get a far better scope for your money. Yes you have to pay import tax and VAT but you still save loads. Don't get put off as all this is handled for you by the carrier. Let us know what you go for. S

I've got two Rockmount ones and one Harris. Both Rockmount bipods lost the nut on the end of one of the pivot pins. As I have discovered, the Harris ones are in a class of their own. Go Harris - far better build.

Great read SS. Good idea to see what your shooting ground looks like too. I'll try and do the same next time.

As Chris said earlier in this thread, I too saved a fortune by buying and importing a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20x50 for use on my 223 from the States. (Specifically http://www.theriflescopestore.com/index.html who were great to deal with.) It's not a difficult process and with the exchange rate at the mo you get a good deal. S

Well done! Just goes to show the hmr *is* ok for fox at the right range and with a well placed shot. My only query would be, (and I'm raising it because I simply don't know), does the amount of blood mean its heart was still pumping for a bit after it was shot only I haven't seen a bleeder like this before? Does this happen the same way with a larger calibre? Anyway, well done again mate! S

Is that right mate?i no nothing about FAC. I thought when you get any FAC rifle the FO checks all the land wether its a .22rf or a airrifle. My FAO in Wiltshire very clearly told me a land check was not required for the FAC air rifle. I guess it could change depending where you are.

I have a two acre paddock in which I am allowed to use my FAC air rifle (Air Arms S410E) but not my 17HMR (CZ452 AM). So last night out to get the bunnies in the paddock which I have not bothered with for ages as I prefer to go onto one of my permissions with the 17 or 223. Having been so used to to be able to sit 100+yards away and kill first time every time, I'd forgotten how much more fieldcraft I needed to get close enough to take them with the FAC air rifle and a guaranteed headshot. So far fewer kills than I'm used to. So my advice would be to apply for both an FAC air rifle and a

Beautiful. Well done!

I use Hornady Vmax 17gn in my cz452 which has proved to be consistently good. Take a look at http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm which makes an interesting read.

Popped into the gun shop again today. (I know, can't stay away... ). Told the owner about my experience and he said he had two customers bring in 17hmr rifles recently with barrels with a strange lump in. Looks a bit like a snake which has just eaten a pig! Apparently this was caused by a dirty barrel and moderator which prevented the first bullet leaving the barrel with both owners commenting that it didn't make much noise when they pulled their respective triggers. Both followed up with a second round thinking they had a dud which left the very attractive lump in their barrels.

This is rather embarrassing but if someone else learns from it, then it'll be worth it. For the last couple of years I have been regularly cleaning my CZ452 17HMR with Sak moderator with a boresnake and have been happy that this was sufficient cleaning. However, after a visit to my local gunshop, Country Pursuits in Cricklade, to buy some more ammo this morning I was advised that I should have been using a rod, copper brush, cleaner and patches to keep it in optimum condition. So equipped with my new purchases I set about cleaning my rifle. First thing I did was take the Sak mod off,

Out shooting rabbits the other day and shot one with a good neat headshot. Next thing I know another one comes along, gives the dead one a sniff, gets on top and starts humping it! Couldn't quite believe my eyes and feel a bit guilty for shooting him before he had finished. I guess sex was the last thing on his mind, apart from the bullet that is.

Bought 1000 rounds of Hornady 17gn hmr rounds from Adenbourne in Witney and paid £8.50 a box. As with most things, the more you buy, the better the discount. :-)

I was thinking about going out lamping then suddenly remembered I had a glass of wine with dinner. My self imposed rules say that if I've had a drink the rifles stay well and truly locked away, so looks like I'm not going out after all. However it got me to thinking. Is there any law that says you can't shoot under the influence of alcohol? Or is society simply relying on the common sense of responsible shooters not to drink and then go out shooting, not only putting others but also ourselves at risk? I suppose for some people who have to drive to get to their permissions the decisi

Well done. It's always satisfying when things get back on target. So the Brookes trigger kit is back on sale? When I last tried to get one I was told that the guy who made them (Eric?) had gone walkabout and nobody knew where he was. Where did you get yours from and was it easy to install?

Just as an update, I spoke to the course owner today and said he would have been tempted to put a bullet between the dog's eyes in the first place! Apparently this guy has been wandering around the course and with his two lurchers and has upset a couple of club members with his dogs. The course owner plans on catching up with him to point out that it is private land and although there is a public footpath that of course he is free to use when ever he wishes, he will expect him to stay on it and keep his dogs on leads at all times. It felt great that he fully backed me.
