Was setting mink cages around the lake when i chanced upon this coot sitting on eggs.......then when checking some Imbra's in the woodland i spotted this hare sitting still till golfers had passed...lol. Pictures were taken at the extreme of digital Zoom so not quite as sharp as i would have liked but interesting none the less.

I agree..........a fully feathered (white) chicken works in most situations, but the strongest draw is the scent from a previous occupant. Rolfe.

Driving between jobs today i chanced across this novel Mawkin (scarecrow) standing between two freshly drilled fields. I thought it was genuinely two guys up a telegraph pole from a distance.......Just had to take some pictures it was so good.

I agree with DUCKWING up to a point about not needing to have more than one GOOD working dog. (WORKING dogs and not house dogs) If you have not got the work for more than one dog then i can see little need for keeping more. But IF like me, you are involved in full-time rabbit control at certain times of the year then more than one dog is an asset. I have always kept TWO running dogs at a time, often a pair of whippets, or over the last few years beddlington hybrids for my rabbiting work. Many times i work alone on private ferreting contracts and have yards and yards of long nets, and sometime

Looks sore that Tracey........Ouch. Them buggers hang on a bit don't they, I always think the little uns bites are worse than the big uns. Hope it soon stops hurting anyway mate........I won't say the old gag about "did you put anything on it" Regards Rolfe.

Humanely dispatch it as quickly as possible as it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to ANY animal and it is only right to stay within the remit of the law at all times. Even if you provided food, water and shelter i doubt it would comply with the law, (as the mere fact that containment could be deemed as causing suffering) Is it a multi-catch (monarch) type trap......as there would be little point in leaving a rat in a single catch type cage trap? Regards Rolfe.

Just a bit of info here........as i had the same discussion with my FAO and indeed DEFRA about the toxic shot issue. The rule only applies to SHOT and NOT Bullets as i understand it, so if you are using shotgun cartridges then they indeed need to me non-toxic.......but you can use a .22 rimfire for instance. Another point........In my county.......i had to have canada geese included in the wording on my FAC as a named species i could legally shoot as part of my open licence, so may be worth checking that point as well. Regards Rolfe.

I'm just back from there today........not a bad little show lurcher racing was good.. BUT......TAKE SOME WELLIES BECAUSE ITS ANKLE DEEP IN MUD IN MOST PLACES. even the car parking is dodgy if you havn't got a 4x4. Rolfe.

If your not going to get a load of work for it .....then you could manage with a cheaper one and there are a lot around, but if you can afford it i would go for the 5 litre stainless steel version, it'll last you years and the spares are readily available. It's like all things.........you get what you pay for, but my stainless one is still going strong after 10 years of use........and it has done hundreds of treatments. . Rolfe.

Best way to remember.........is always keep the saftey-catch to the side of the tunnel......which side doesn't matter. Rolfe.

Keeping the traditional methods alive as well as embracing new techniques and materials is the way forward in my opinion. Many of the old methods and materials can be utilised in todays pest control practises often with excellent results. Rolfe.

I am fortunate that I get to work in some very old estates and woodlands for many months in the year and come across plenty of coppiced hazel and ash saplings that have many many uses to the rural pest controller. Last week I got to cut a varied selection to use for Long Net pegs, Purse Net pegs, Fenn Trap holding pegs, trap setting sticks, and even a few walking and thumb stick shanks. Whilst i realise not everyone can get there hands on such a windfall, if you do get the chance, I urge you to make full use of natures free harvest, purse net pegs in particular will last many years before want

Being taught to use traditional nets I was really impressed with the basket system. I too use Brins basket system and have had many discussions with him about them.......(always entertaining he is). On a lot of my contracts the quickset is simply the most effecient tool there is and it gets a lot of use during the season for sure. There is still a place for the traditional long net, and i have just cut and shaped another batch of hazel pegs ready for the coming season. I still prefer the traditional nets and hazel pegs for night work, but much prefer the quickset on the day time jobs for speed

my whippet pup on his 3rd rabbit what you think ?
Rolfe replied to kirk224's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Looks a good-un there.........take it easy with him though as he is still a bit young, but he certainly is showing a lot of promise, he'll turn out fine if you take him along nice and steady. Rolfe. -
These are typical well used rabbit runs, just look for the most well used as some will have more rabbit traffic than others, the beats are well defined.

Just been out to feed the fish and was greeted by the sight of frog spawn in the pond already. Daft frog had deposited it on TOP of the netting put there to stop the Herons pinching the fish. Thought it was very early myself, just wondered if anyone else had seen any.

Yes i am really lucky in as much as i have plenty of hazel coppices at my disposal with a bountiful supply of straight hazel from tealers to walking stick shanks. It does make life that bit easier i suppose. Rolfe.

Just completed the last (bigish) ferreting contract of the season......first time we had encountered any little un's this year as well........i think we managed an extra months ferreting this time. We did a once a year job around an old Manor House, stone wall banks, flower beds.......and even an old bonfire produced a bunny or two.......but the numbers were well down on last year....we must be doing too good a job. Just a few pictures of the dog watching the nets.........and the added bonus of some wonderful Hazel and Ash sticks cut on site these will make long net pegs, purse net pegs, setti

I was ferreting some playing fields the other day and two of these (one each side of a basketball court) were bugging me........i could not for the life of me make out what they we supposed to be used for. Now when somebody tells me as i am sure they will.........i will be that bit wiser.

New American mole trap on the market
Rolfe replied to Steve Albano's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
They were pushing them at last years Pest Tech in November........had a good look at them and they are absolute rubbish. No professional mole catcher worth his salt would use one in my opinion, and as suggested may be aimed more at the gullible general public.(the only things they are likely to catch) Rolfe. -
I'm not doing the installation, but it is going at the BOTTOM of the bank to shut the rabbits out the railway fence is already rabbit-proof netted. Rolfe.
-
Yes it's the quickset system........I prefer it for this type of work as it is less labour intensive than the traditional long net in my opinion. All the rabbits were in tip-top condition.

Just completed a two day ferreting contract to clear rabbits from some playing field embankments prior to a rabbit proof netting installation. Massive connected buries meant a lot of purse nets being used along with longnets as a back-up and to help divide the buries into manageable segments. We finished up with 27 rabbits........not a lot considering the work we put in, but we cleared most of what was there i'm sure. Two unusual things happened during the ferreting session, we had 2 rabbits in one purse net (something i hadn't seen for years) and also 2 rabbits heads sticking out of one bolth
