Visited a client who wanted a squirrel removed from his roof-space, and this is the culprit seen inside a supposedly squirrel proof bird feeder.........shortly before he was cage trapped in the roof. Ten out of Ten for effort anyway.

Well i do get some unusual requests at times but this was a novel one. A nearby local football club wanted some bunnies shifting from under their clubhouse and two old shipping containers used for net storage. We duly obliged and surrounded the clubhouse with 125 yards of long nets and slipped the ferrets underneath, the noise and mayhem was amazing as the rabbits sought to escape the persistent ferret activity. By placing a man on each diagonal corner of the club house we could both watch all sides as the rabbits bolted and tangled in the longnets. We finished up with 7 big healthy bunnies in

Me too.......The old boys i used to long net with at night in the 60's all had whippets or whippet hybrids but only ever used them in the daytime for rabbits. They would never dream of taking them long netting at night. No doubt these dogs have existed.........but i would love to see one work.

As a full-time pest controller a big part of my work remit is rabbit control. I do not undertake many jobs where the longnet is not involved in some way (quickset or traditional) and therefore a good net dog is essential. I have a Beddy/Greyhound/ Whippet hybrid that is superb at the job. He will hold rabbits in purse nets until i can get to them, and jump and intercept rabbits tangled in the longnet again to hold them until i can dispatch them. This along with being extemely soft-mouthed makes him the perfect ferreting accessory. The old ways are still being used and long may they continue to

When a mole is not a Mole...........
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Never ever caught a vole in a mole trap..........but have caught many weasels........I am always saddened in a way if i catch a weasel as they are helping me with the mole control so to speak. Weasels are prolific mole and vole hunters and as such often fall foul of the mole traps. Rolfe. -
We had a fair bit of snow here last night so took the Quickset and a handful of purse nets for an hour on the golf course as it was closed. Had 5 rabbits from under the trees, it was easy to see the buries that were in use by the runs in the snow.......can't think of a better way to spend a couple of hours.........well maybe one.

When a mole is not a Mole...........

Yes the trap would work exactly the same over here Steve, but as i alluded to earlier, we get very little call for this type of pest control work. Rolfe. -
When a mole is not a Mole...........
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Hi Steve........long time no speak my friend. NO these are bank or field voles the same as you trap in the states i think. The endangered water vole is a much larger animal and frequents riverside banks, and has been decimated here somewhat by mink predation. The two species that we come across in a pest capacity are field (or short tailed voles) and bank voles......but they seldom cause a big problem in garden areas. The longer tail and slightly smaller size helps distinguish the bank vole from the field vole. The pictures in my post are of field vole activity as far as i can tell...but they -
Not wishing to state the "bleeding obvious" but embryo mole catchers might like to see these pictures of Vole activity. Client rang to say she had a mole causing havoc on her lawn ........so i duly answered the summons only to find it was a vole..........not a mole........albeit it had taken over some old mole workings as they are inclined to do. Notice the clean ping-pong ball sized holes........and the droppings just outside....a sure giveaway of vole activity. The client was quite happy to live with situation once she found out it wasn't a mole.

I recognise that setting stick....... The Snap- E are the ones i use.......look at the rat thread in this section i put up.........they work a treat, yours will work too no doubt but i like the open design better. If you want to shortcut the trap weathering/cleaning process, then boil them up with a little soda or oak bark it will remove all smells and oils a treat........Keep at it and they will see plenty of use. Rolfe.

They must be feeding something next door.......bird feeders or such like to have a problem. I wouldn't try and attract them to be honest because the food source they have is going to be a bigger draw than yours. If there are any runs through from next door then body-grips in a cubby will intercept them, but they may take a while to start using them.

To cut a very long story short, i was called in to a garden where the clients have every bird feeder known to man dotted around the garden to sort out the inevitable rat problem. There was a complete "warren" in the hedge row.......and holes all under the garden shed. The obvious solution (anticoagulant baiting) was out of the question after completing a risk assessment.......to many reasons to go into detail, so good old fashioned trapping was the order of the day, a few fenns in tunnels, and a few break-backs carefully positioned and we were in business. Here's the first of many i hope, that

They came as a complete unit with the quickset basket from Brian Brinded........still serving me well after many years of use..........a good investment. Rolfe.

Your Welcome..........they'll help you out a bit until you can make some of your own. Rolfe.

I am a full time pest controller and these types of jobs are the nicer ones.....!

I was called it by a client to clear his rather spacious garden of a few rabbits before his wife ordered her bedding plants for the year, last year they ate the lot apparently. So armed with a quickset and a few dozen purse nets, we systematically ferreted through the hedges and borders to remove the rabbit problem. We ended the morning with ten of the biggest and fattest rabbits i had seen for many a year. 5 bucks and 5 does (all of the does were carrying young at varying stages of gestation). One happy customer and a job well done.

Caught 3 in the same garden in one week........obviously from the same family. Haven't seen one since though.

Have a good one mate........! Happy Birthday.

I have had them kill-in occaisonally but....... my workers never seem to lay up........they kill (if the rabbit won't or cant bolt) and move on. In over 11 years on this course i have never yet had to dig around the trees yet...... so in answer to your question i have never had a problem. Sods law now dictates i will.....

Now at first that is what i thought........but........if you look closely you will see two single prints and then a double.......repeated the entire length of the prints. My take on it was the fox was moving a bit faster than the normal fast trot........but not quite as fast as to be galloping.........somewhere in between. The prints are too uniform to be another fox running the same path...... in my opinion....! Regards Rolfe.

Up to now £180 but the leg is not healing so going to be more ..Please remember when voting this is his xmas money and wages for working really hard he is only 15 lollol I would take the money and put it up somewhere safe........then give him it back when he least expects it. That way he will learn his lesson.......but you can repay his thoughtfulness as well
