  1. The one leaning against the quad is the new one made for me by Walter at Cheiftan Forge. The one next to the new (blue one) in the kitchen is one of the two old ones shown in an earlier picture. The other (older) one has a spike on the end and cost me a packet. The red one at UK Traps looks interesting, although I'm not in a position to risk wasting £18 on something that might never turn up at the moment. Perhaps once this white shit is out of the way I will be able to crack on and catch some moles. Hopefully I'll then be in a position to risk loosing £18 on a failed delivery. I
  2. I've also had a quick look at these: http://www.uktraps.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=63&product_id=86 BUT, I'm reluctant to order one at the moment because of the obvious connections with Pro-Trapper. Time will tell, maybe when I'm a bit more flush I'll splash out on one just to see what they are like. God, I'm a sucker for kit.
  3. Here ye go earthy, this (rubbish) photo shows the new one I had made alongside one of the older ones. Walter re-shafted the old one for me and did a fine job
  4. There is a big difference between squirrel hoppers and rat hoppers. The galvanised squirrel hoppers, with a magnetic perspex door (the magnet means that nothing smaller than a squirrel should be able to get to the bait) are a very useful tool for controlling squirrel populations in commercial forestry between March and August. The rat hoppers on the other hand are OK, but due to the amount of bait they hold are not legal to use IMO. Don't forget that the maximum bait point size for most rodenticides in now 200g, so a hopper that holds a kilo (or more in some cases) would only be legal
  5. Good to get one in the bag Stubby. Let's hope for some footage overnight.
  6. Have you thought about putting a post up in the classified section? I would also try the Gamekeeping section on here, and a few of the dedicated shooting/keepering forums. Good luck with it anyway, and don't forget to post a picture of the finished product.

  8. Loads of threads on here about these things: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/79306-rodenator/ http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/245842-how-can-i-talk-him-out-of-getting-a-rodenator/
  9. The best I can find at the moment:
  10. Buck rabbit by any chance Froudy? They do fight amongst themselves a bit sometimes.... Yes, it could well be old Mixy scabs that have been scratched off. If rabbits didn't get over mixy, then we wouldn't have any by now. This is why I don't kill mixy rabbits unless I have to. If they recover (which they often do, depending on the strain) then they pass on immunity to their young.
  11. That's an excellent tip from Socks. I would add that the trap must be stable. A fox is easily put off if the trap rocks as soon as they step on the floor. I guess that town foxes are much less wary than their rural counterparts.
  12. Here is another one @PressHsa
  13. how about a #sabscum hashtag? If we all used it at the same time we could get it to trend. Might be better to do it at a busier time of day though
  14. A captive bolt is just a stunner. It causes damage to the front part of the brain, which renders the animal unconscious and 'insensible' to pain. A pith rod is usually a plastic rod these days which is about 2 and a half feet long. You push it into the hole as far as it will go and it causes damage to the rear part of the brain and spinal cord. The modern canes have barbs on the end so that once you put it right in you can't get it back out. That is to stop any SRM leaving the animal (in theory). Pithing is rarely carried out in modern abattoirs due to the risk to the slaughterme
  15. You need to quote his name when you tweet Woz. For example: @huntsabjames what do you find the best way of skinning foxes?
  16. They were out with us before Christmas. There is a video link from his blog. Utter scum the lot of 'em. I didn't realise who it was until he tweeted at me and blocked me. If he blocks you keep on tweeting with his username.
  17. The only issue with the captive bolt on horses is that they fall forward.... Pithing is one of the most dangerous aspects of slaughter, and needs to be done while standing in the right place. Horses have very thin skulls; I've done loads with a .22 with no problem at all. Sheep and goats on the other hand can be problematic with a .22.
  18. I've got to agree with that Moxy Pest controllers, who are a special breed at the best of times, seem to get 'hooked' on pest control suppliers, and buy nearly everything from them regardless of the price. As an example, I helped a member on here recently who needed a full face respirator. The usual suspects wanted around £150, but I suggested that we tried a fella from my village here who has just started out on his own selling PPE to factories and the like from the back of his motor. The result? A decent 3M full face respirator for £ odd quid. It makes ye wonder, don't it?
  19. It's all very well trying to buy stuff in from abroad to save a bob or two, but it can be fraught with problems. Often HMRC will impound parcels and charge import duty and VAT on the contents. Apart from the expense, you have endless delays while they take it in turns to kick your package around their store room. If a company as good as Fourteenacre have gone to the trouble of bringing the things over, then I would buy them off them (not that I intend buying any). If we don't support British businesses then they will disappear. Think about it, if you can't buy a British product,
  20. Bump He's really getting the hump now....... Follow and tweet at him. It's quite entertaining.
  21. I don't think so T. Sometimes postings on forums just don't come across the way the writer intended. Stubby has nothing to prove on here. He's caught plenty of foxes before like this, and the addition of the trail camera could potentially produce some interesting footage for us all to see. If he'd caught a fox on the first night then that would be good going. I'm sure Stubby will let us all know when there is some action to see. Out of interest, what do the members here favour in terms of door action on fox traps? I've always liked the double door system and reckon it works
  22. Yep, got one when they first came out. A useful bit of kit from time to time, although the newer ones have capture facilities which would be much better.
