Why not ? They were used in Lurcher breeding long before the Bull X's and Saluki hybrids came allong ; Cheers.

Daisy was my favoutite of all time; she was a freak, a phenonemon ! Front end like a Whippet, back end like a Greyhound ! Her litter mates were all top class; Robbo, Zoey, etc. I saw her kill the only hare I think she was ever slipped on, and saw her win countless scratch races, under 21" and no limit. She was Whippet/Grey; Bilko x Frozen Kill. There are dogs doing faster times now, but not dominating and winning in such style as she did ! Oh ! The good old days !! LOL !! Cheers.

Hi mate, I made lots of copies and handed them out to people who were around at the time,(1972 I think). I still see some of the people who were on that film, and the lad that had Sally is now into horses and still keeps a Beddy/Whippet around his stables. Sally was only around 26lb and had pleanty Collie in her and could catch a hare, and as he says on the film, she did 8.70's for 150yds, not a bad time for what was essentialy a Lurcher, back then !! I've been to Westerhope Whippets this morning, and will be at the Rising Sun tomorrow, but it's nothing like back then !! Cheers. Cheers

As others have said; if you have permission, call the police and give them all the relevant information, especialy your reg number, where you are going and at what time. Make sure you get an incident number, and if you get pulled, this is all you need to give them ! Cheers.

Hi !! Been out with your dad and your uncle; good guys !! Welcome aboard !! Cheers.

Try reading the whole thread, and you'll see "one of these dogs" with a Roe Cheers.

One of the greatest brood bitches in the history of Non-Ped Whippet racing was a bitch called "Young Lucy"; she was mated to various sires; Biko, Blue Fawn and I think, Good as Gold. She threw many Racing Champions and some of the best Scratch Dogs ever ! She was variously described as being Collie/Grey, and Whippet x Collie/Grey; but one thing is certain; she had pleanty Collie in her !! I bought a pup from A. Pickup in 1972, by "Darly Fly" a Bilko dog, and out of "Susan", (Blue Fawn x Young Lucy). Apart from being a top class racer, he was also one of the best "Lurchers" I've had, until he m

Lovely looking bitch ! And of course you know I'm not knocking them ! In fact, if you want to send a decent racer down to me for the summer, I'll give it the best racing and maybe a bit of mooching !! Cheers.

Totally agree their different to the dogs i saw in the late 70s then again most of them were the result of ped whippets bred to greyhounds and still retained the peds stamina.atb dell Poach, that dogs pic with the roe I put up; that was in the late 60's and his litter varied from an 18lb bitch to a 50lb bitch !! He was around 36/40lb but looked like a perfect Whippet. He wasn't the fastest around, but on the day he got faster after every 150 yd race ! We used to walk to the tracks , over the many slagheaps that blotted the landscape then, and would course a hare before we got to the tra

I think I'm convinced it's a Mouflon; Cheers.

I tend to agree with you, Chalky; but the non-ped grews in the old days were much more "lurcher" bred, and were expected to be "multi functional"; race, course and do a bit ferreting. I still go to the Whippet racing, been there today, but the modern non-ped is bred for out and out speed, and with a few exceptions, would not stand up to a days coursing or a nights lamping. Nothing wrong with that; I'm amazed at the times they do over 150 yds, I even bought a stopwatch to time them myself, as I couldn't believe how faster they were than in my day !! Cheers.

This lad was sired by Blue Boy, out of Zarwood. He won pleanty of races, took any amount of hares, and had the odd Roe; this was long, LONG, before the ban, by the way ! LOL !; Cheers.

I wonder if it was brainy enough to know it was going to land in that bush, or mad enough not to care !! LOL !! Cheers.

That looks more like a Mouflon, a type of wild sheep, than a deer. Cheers.

Straight crosses or lurcher to lurcher which do you run?
chartpolski replied to Red Collar's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
At the moment, I have one of each; a Lurcher, (Beddy/Grey x Deer/Grey-Whippet/Grey), and a Longdog, 1st x Deer/Grey.It's impossible to say what type is best, as they are for different jobs, but both will have a decent go at each others job ! It's all a matter of personal choice and what you use the dog for. Cheers. -
Did the vet not give any medication ? I'd be looking for a second opinion if I was you ! Best of luck, hope he's ok !! Cheers.

Interesting reply. How should a handler be the focus for a dogs drive ? Cheers.

Who misses the Waterloo cup ?why?
chartpolski replied to Red Collar's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
"it was one time a year..." that may be so if you only went to the Waterloo Cup I must of been lucky to of been out 3-4-5days a week and that statement would apply to any coursing meeting not just the Waterloo Cup Y.I.S Leeview I was talking about the Waterloo in particular, as thats what the thread is about; but I must agree, at the Coquet & Border in the 60s & 70s the flanking lines were made up of miners from the Ashington area and a lot of shipyard workers from the Tyneside area. Cheers. in the 70,s the beaters at alrcar were TA soldiers one of the co -

Who misses the Waterloo cup ?why?
chartpolski replied to Red Collar's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
aye and the clubs and the rich landowners are still coursing within the law, Its us the majority that bears the brunt of the ban and pays the price in our pockets when we get caught. This law is like the old forest laws of old keeping us of the land... Hare Coursing was, before the ban, and still is, ilegal to me, as I never had permission anywhere. I enjoyed going to my local coursing club, The Border & Coquetdale, and enjoyed the Wateloo, but there was never any chance of me running a dog at either meets ! I simply wasn't in any of the cliques. But that never stopped the enjoymen -
In the "old days", it was standard practice to give a "dropper" to a racing Whippet, Greyhound, or coursing dog; just to let it have an easy kill, let it taste some warm fur and give it a bit of confidence ! It is, of course totaly illegal to do that now ! Cheers.

Who misses the Waterloo cup ?why?
chartpolski replied to Red Collar's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Getting back on topic.... I miss the Waterloo Cup, 'cause it was the one time of year when Lords and layabouts, accountants and coal miners, pillars of society and scallys, could all get together with one thing in common .....RUNNING DOGS !!!! Social standing, rich and poor, didn't matter a shit, all got excited when the Hare came thru' and the Slipper started running !!! There was cheers when the Hare made her escape and cheers when the Greyhound made a good kill ! It's a part of life that old blokes like me will not see again, and young lads in the game can only dream about ....... Cheer -
What's this got to do with "dropped rabbits" ????? Cheers.
