Nice pics got a Nikon myself you. Can get a very reasonable second hand 70/300 for not bad money from mbp cameras online think that's the way it's spelt if not mpb well worth a look and very helpful on phone if you phone shop atb taffey

Haha penny thanks. What's wrong with the tulips? Lol. I was trying to blur the background and focus on one of the flowers. It nearly worked

To do that you really need a very wide aperture. Modern digital cameras aimed at amateur use aren't as good at shallow depth of fields as the old 35mm film cameras.

 

Try taking a similar shot using 'Aperture Priority' mode, the widest aperture (that's the lowest number available), Spot Focus mode and then using a tripod or resting your elbows on a table take three shots. The first one normally. The second one just depress the shutter button partially to lock focus and then holding the button move the camera back about 3"before taking the photo. For the third shot do the same, but move back 6" then compare the results. You should find that the background will the more blurred on the third shot.
