wi11ow 2,657 Posted March 1, 2013 Report Share Posted March 1, 2013 This will be my last trip of the season lamping with the pup..i say pup but she is around 16mth now..she has finnished her first lamping season with 63 rabbit's..not massive number's i know but enough to kick start a young dog for the next fresh season when she should be fully matured..her jumping/recall/stock breaking and strike are all more or less 100% for her age but the retrieve need's working on and that is the main reason i have pulled the plug for this season.. To start with in her early day's she had a good retrieve and occasionaly placed the odd bunnie in my hand but it has gone from worse to worse...and lastnight realy tested my patience and i had to try realy hard not to take my frustration out on the pup..which i did not thank god.. ..she caught 6 bunnie's as you can see but they where very hard on short crop field's and the speed the missed one's hit the hedge's and fence's had me wondering how they did not kill themself.. The retrieve was nothing short of diabolical..she would come within 10ft then proceed to crunch the bunnie..not that i am bothered about that but when i took a step forward to pick the bunnie up she would walk away from me with the bunnie..if i turned my back and walked away she would follow but as soon as i went for the bunnie she would walk away.. ..she would however let me have them once they where brown bread..hopefully over the summer monthes i can iron this little problem out.. Numbers aren't everything anyway, a lot of people seem to forget getting out and enjoying working your dogs is the most important bit everything else is a bonus... Millet 4,497 Posted March 1, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 1, 2013 I'm not shy to big number's mate but that is with older make or break dog's..with a pup especialy a clever one i don't see the point in over doing it and spoiling them for life..the warning sign for me on that last night out was when she stopped at a hedge..normaly she would plough in after the bunnie but the second last run she did not..don't get me wrong the bunnie was long gone but i still like to see a dog go in after them as 9 times out of 10 the bunnie is pushed back out into certain death if it is not caught to start with...she ended the night with a kill and that is fine by be.. Here is some idea to the number's i could of put the pup into but this perticular dog is not ready..maybe a half x saluki or bull x maybe but not a clever thinking dog.. 3 Quote Link to post
FUJI 16,279 Posted March 1, 2013 Report Share Posted March 1, 2013 Like others have said it's not always about the amount caught..sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture like you said about the bunny in the hedge?...get a kill,end on a high and call it a night...holy shit even my older dogs I like to see them finish a shift with a catch..a young dog it's a must if at all possible! To be perfectly honest my next step with her would be a bit of ferreting,not to catch loads but to get her revved up a bit,hearing them underground,bolters or even in the nets for her to mouth...this is just what I'd do myself,not saying it's the way to go but that would be me lol..I really like the bitch,does she hunt up herself during the day Millet? Ever tried putting her through some woodland or such that holds beasties to see what she makes of seeing them? I bet she wouldn't slow down at a hedge after one of them lol they never do haha.. 1 Quote Link to post

But my point was its not the be all and end all, I think sometimes people only think you've had a good night/ day if you've caught loads, I can honestly say I enjoy every night or day out, there's lots of different reasons for nights or days to be memorable and it's not just numbers... This isn't aimed at anyone either it's just my view on it, lads coming into this now seem to be a bit over worried about numbers, catch rates etc.... You've got to enjoy it all, we're lucky to do what we do.. We see things that a lot of people don't on our days and night out... I've enjoyed your and johnny's reports on these pups mate, they both interest me, the first dogs I saw run as a kid were collie blooded and the next one i bring in will be... I will be up the dales with her soon enough daytime while a bit of ferreting will be done on a mates permission..i have done a bit of ferreting with her on awkward land where she would never catch..just aswell realy as she sharp get's bored of that ferreting lark and rather lay's down or pisses of mooching about on her own.. ..as for the beasties not yet mate she wont kill a rat yet so i'll leave them on the back burner for now and maybe let her seen a loonie of a dog on them next season.. .. 1 Quote Link to post
