Brush pile hunting for COON!!

Recommended Posts

Having recently gone back to the states to go and stay with Kye and his wife off here, they very kindly had me back to visit and spend a few weeks with them to stay. Kye very generously took the time off work so that he could get me out hunting which i really appreciate him doing. We had many hunts, so many stories to be told so i'll put them up when i get time !!!

Towards the end of the trip Kye managed to contact RC1 off here who does a bunch of brush pile hunting for raccoons with his terriers and he kindly invited us up for a day.

So Kye, F.R and myself set off at around 4am heading north to meet up with RC1 for a days hunting with the terriers. We were going to hunting some of RC1s terriers and kye brought his young dog Cadno along to try out.

We searched a few piles at the first farm first and no luck was to be had, so we headed to a new bit of ground we dropped RC1s red terrier who knows the crack when it comes to these piles, the first pile and he was on fairly soon with a nice easy bit of clearing to get to him n a nice little coon that we let the bulldale bitch draw.

On to the next pile RC1 let his russel bitch and a young terrier go they picked up on a coon on a pile and after a while founding it up kye and rc1's son opened up to the terriers on the coon.

After a fair walk through some real nice wooded country we got to a big brush pile that we let the terriers enter, after about ten mins the terriers could be heard baying trying to get to their quarry they were on his arse and around in circles they went as they couldn’t pin him down as he kept on giving them the run around, after many laps it seemed we saw the coon working around the brash, the terriers were soon on to him and then he decided to bolt by Brin the bulldale bitch she sorted him out only a small one of that. The terriers continued to work the pile and another coon bolted but he re-entered, the terriers were soon on to him so we picked up rc1's terriers and left Kye's Cadno down to try, he meet his quarry in the pile so we left him 20 mins to settel then we decided he had it bottled up so down was the only way, we fired up the chainsaw and the started to clear the brash we cleared a bunch off the top then we hit frozen rootballs, frozen mud amongst a bunch of frozen logs the joys. Kye got on the bar and started to chisel on through the frozen soil and roots and cleared the mud off any wood that needed cutting, once it was clear i got to work with the saw but not after long the chain was f*cked so we changed the chain but not to long till that to was hard work to use due to the soil and crap that was around the wood. After a few hours of clearing our way down, the dog was still in his position by this time it was dark. There was a gap down that i could crawl in that we cleared a bunch more with the saw so i could get to the terrier and see what was going on, in with the torch and I could see the arse of the terrier in a load of branches that he pushed on in to, I cleared around the terrier and pulled him away and there was a coon sitting back real tightly in amongst the branches and roots that the terrier couldn't get to as he was in real tight, so i pulled the terrier and shimmed on back with the dog to get F.R's pistol to dispatch the game. After 3 n a half hours of alot of chiseling/cutting through frozen wooded mud infested debris we had our dog and quarry. The young dog had done well and i saw real improvement in the dog over the trip.

Yeah, it was nice to have you back mate, and as i have said, you are welcome at our home, when ever you want, for as long as you want mate!..

It was kind of RC1 to get us out for the day...that last dig was a real test, for man, dog and quarry!...i was happy with young Cadno, he done well given that he is a first season dog...the summer should hopefully do him good, and then next season he can have all he wants!..lol.

Good craic...it took us four and half hours to get there, and about seven to get home!...FFS!!..LOL.

Cheers for putting it up mate..

Sound, just how hard are Racoons compared to some of our native species here in the UK?

How long is a piece of string mate!?..lol.

If you dig them with all out bayers, that want to sit 8" away, and sing, they are not much hassell imo,...if you want to see the best (or WORST!) from a Raccoon, you should dig them with a mixer, or a gritty type of dog...they are much harder than a fox, imo, and have the hide/fat/body of a Badger...they have FIVE weapons (four hands and a mouth full of good teeth) and will ball up on a dogs head...plus they have the I.Q of a monkey!..lol..i have seen a 25lbs raccoon run through tunnels in a hay loft with two dogs hanging off of it...and it was moving like it had nothing on it.

They are a tough animal imo, and there are some Raccoons that WANT to fight...we have had them at night, and when they see the Lurchers coming at them, they will run AT the dog...i have also had a Lurcher killing a coon, and another coon, climb up the back legs of the lurchers and chew her hamstrings up...they are STRONG,...we have two tame Raccoons, and when they grab you, its like a vice...maybe RatKillah can comment on them, i know he was impressed buy my two yearling raccoons (both around 18-20lbs)

Ratkilla, I wish things could have worked out so that I could have been there when you all made it to RC1's......I would have liked to have met you! RC1 called to tell me about your dig as soon as he got home, and I asked if it was like the one we had the weekend before..............he said "WORSE"! :o Glad to here you had some fun and maybe next trip we'll get to meet up.

Kye, growing up hunting coon my whole life I've never thought much about them, but I sure do like reading your descriptions of them! :D Pretty much spot on. :clapper: They can be like little kunfoo fighters. LOL
