many years ago when i were 22 years old I had this dog i bought from paul taylor from notts.he was collieXgreyXsalukiXgrey.

terriersoflongago038-1.jpg

It was 1987 i believe.I was fanatical on lamping. At 4 years old Cloudy caught 42 rabbits,1 hare and 1 fox on the lamp single handedly.I Had a battered ould mk1 escort and I lamped on my own all night long,I lamped 3 nights a week that time when the conditions were spot on.If I can remember correctly it didnt take too much out of him as I believe he was out again a night or two later.I dont think he was capable of catching 100 single handedly but if the rabbits were teeming in one spot who knows.Great topic though.

You know to get this lurcher I had get a coach to Rosslare then board the ferry and travel all night, then get on a coach and travel to notts.I went to a show that day,met JACK CHARLTON and BRIAN PLUMMER(swoon, lol)then sleep over in a mates house, put the dog in a crate catch the coach after pleading with the driver to allow the pup to be put in the luggage department and then get back to the ferry terminal and sail back home, get off the ferry and be picked up by another mate and driven 4 hrs back to home, hows that for dedication, lol.I also squeezed a visit in to David Hancock too somehow but the memory is a little foggy after all the years.the drive of youth.wish I still had it but I pack up after 20 rabbits these days,i dont need any more than that plus i think it was an ego thing then too.

al fairness to you all ther is hunting for a sport and virmin controll . if it was just sport was the point in killing so many wat do you do with the bodys. im sure 10 to 20 rabbits is ample amount to get a laugh and enjoj the sport . they must b lifting the rabbits in the bed wats the point you might as well throw a ball .

i find that where the rabbits are in numbers ie ;50's 60's in each field...... then the keepers are not far behind you ;)

100 in one night, one dog? Its a hard task, but it has been done

can you honistly back it up or are you just agreeing with what you have heard ,[but it has been done ]

honestly? Just backing up what i have heard. But i have no reason to think this is 'lies'

just finding some ground with a hundred rabbits on it to catch would be a challenge near me! it would take an amazing dog and a ruthless man to stay out and take that many in the 1 night. would love to get into high teens let alone 70 or 80 or even 100!!!!

Back then there were more rabbits about mate, 30 used to be a poor night, 30 now a good night.

Not sure if this has been on before how many know lurchers that have done it. Genuine.

Many thanks for your replies and views, good to see it created an interest, more pleasing to see that the replies were sensible and no slagging off, ha there might be after Iv'e finished!!!!!!! Well back in the middle nineties my mates 23inch curdog (collie) greyhound/Whippet achieved the 100 twice, and regular took 40-50 in a night, she ran 6-7 miles everyday and lamped 3-4 nights a week, the 100 was done in Scotland just over the border, Lockerbie area, there was plenty of rabbits on the estates we hunted, three of us used to take 1000 plus a year from there. Good old days, I will add that I never took that many, my dog wasn't capable of 100, I'm a plodder 20-30 did me.

If my memory serves me well, I think the lurcher in in question was on the cover of a Lurchermania video, little white speckled bitch. Cheers WR.

Been talking with a mutual friend wild rover, he recalls the night and between them with 2 collieX bitches took 187 rabbits in the night. they covered 7miles of woodland edge to get them, but conditions were right and knowing them 2 you would nt expect the dogs to be anything less than 100% fit, and they knew what and how to handle it to give them an advantage in their favour

Thats very good going :notworthy: Ive never lamped Lockerbie, only done it during the day, I would imagine those sort of numbers would be hard to come by these days? rabbits seem to be thinner on the ground everywhere now :(
