MR TEA POT 1,287
Went ferreting today with a member off here, Rhodey. He put a post up asking if somebody could show him the ropes,as he only lived a hour away i thought i would pop up to his permish and show him. I arrived about 8.00am at his house,he was still in bed,so his mum made me a brew(lovely lady )while rhodey decide to get up.He came downstairs looking a bit rough, lesson 1 don't go out on your works xmas do when you have to get up early  . We got up to his permish, there was a good frost and it was white over and BLOODY cold.We walked up to the hedge we was going to ferret,i said to rhodney you net up and i will just see how you do it,after he had finished a quick check and a few pointers about the art of setting purse nets, and we was ready we netted all the way down the hedge row,so if any holes where missed the rabbits would be back netted.Rhodey saw my long nets and said are you going to set them and the great wise teacher,me, said no we will not need them as the rabbits will run down the hedge towards the other setts and get caught. So we put the ferrets in about 5 mins a rabbit bolted and you guessed it ran the full length of the hedge and got in to a wood .I looked up to see my grasshopper with a fecking big grin which turned in to a fit of laughter, while i stood there as red as a reddish muttering to myself,AND belive me i was never allowed to forget about it for the rest of the day .So we moved to the next sett and ferrets,in wham a rabbit in the purse net, which led to me doing a dive on to the frozen earth feck me it hurt. We carried on down the hedge and nothing else bolted. So we moved on to a patch of brambles,i set the long nets this time around the patch, and after i had shown rhodey how to place nets on the runs,he sett some himself and did a good job i must admit(teacher proud of grasshopper moment )so we put the ferrets in and waited after about 20 mins the ferrets came back out and we thought thats it nothing in,picked 1 ferret up and the other went back in after about 5 mins we heard a rabbit squelling,i ran round the other side of the brambles,to where the squelling was but could not see anything, then i felt something thud on to the bottom of my boot i looked down and could see the ass end of a rabbit went to grab it and it went back in the hole,i could feel it bumping so i said rhodey pass me the spade, less then 18 inches and there was the rabbit with the ferret hanging on it.So i pulled it out and was about to dispatch it when rhodeys ferret got hold of my hand after a few choice words, rhodey's ferret final calmed down,i should add at this point his ferrets are only young so it was just a bit excited at getting its first rabbit.Rhodey's ferrets are very tame and easy to handle a pleasure to work them.So after that it was time for the off. I would just like to say thanks to RHODEY for inviting me over,it was a pleasure to be out with him,he is keen and willing to learn and takes in everything he is told. Here is a few pics not many because it was to cold to take my golves off A couple of pics of the land Rhodey setting net on a run. The bottom pic shows the bramble patch we did. Long net set round the patch and me pulling the rabbit out. and the ferret showing i deep it was And of course the end of day pic. Only 2 rabbits but the bag was not important,it was just about showing Rhodey how to go about the ferreting game. Thanks again mate you are welcome up to mine anytime AND i will use the long net this time Edited December 7, 2008 by MR TEA POT Quote Link to post
