cbw 4
Assume you were to win the lotery and cash was not a major issue. What make and model .243 would you buy for fox/deer and what glass would you put on it! This is mostly for a bit of fun, but also I am about to request .243 for my certificate and would like to buy something a 'bit special'. Cheers CBW Quote Link to post

Mr_Logic 5
243 for fox and deer... hmm... I had that thought, always a compromise. My 243, when it's back from repair, will be basically a fox gun, as it will shoot the 55/58gr stuff, which is brilliant on Charlie but less great on deer. If I were buying a rifle again it'd be a CZ, or possibly a Howa. My 223 and new 308 are so well made next to RWS, Tikka et al that the difference is amazing. I suspect the Tikka and RWS will shoot straighter, but CZ's better made, corners aren't cut. The magazine, trigger, trigger guard are all steel. Rifle looks and feels proper. But, for a fox/deer gun, I'd not recommend the CZ either, because you don't get quick release mounts for the dovetail. So, I would recommend something with Weaver mounts on it, so Remington or Howa. probably Howa tbh, like a Remington, but smoother mag and better VFM. Now, none of these guns are custom guns, and they wouldn't shoot like it either, but just because you've got limitless cash in this scenario, why spend it all on that? A Howa 243 with decent glass is still going to kill every deer and fox you throw at it. Have a cheaper gun and a holiday Edit, I missed the glass section! I would have two scopes, zeroed for different ammo. For deer - Swaro/Schmidt/Zeiss, either 8x56 or 3-12x50. German #4 ret or heavy duplex. Preferably illuminated. For fox - Same brands, but in the 4-16, 6-20-ish variety. Don't think you need all the mag, but it might come in handy and with glass that expensive the top end would be usable. And that is a money-no-object one, I would love it but can't afford Edited November 5, 2008 by Mr_Logic Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
i would have a nice custom 243ai with a nice s&b pm11 scope. maybe heavy for deer stalking and to much mag but you could have some fun with long range crows and foxes to Quote Link to post
