Broken neck in lurcher

My mates (ScouseJ) young bitch has broke her neck and he needs some info.

I think he said her second vertebrae from her head is split in half and the next two are chipped, he is gutted and is sat at home dog sitting at the mo. Think her neck is in a cast. Has anyone ever experienced this before and what do you think her chances are??? He is after a decent vet in the north west nr liverpool to give him a second opinion, he took her the pdsa but wants to know if its fixable or if she'll never run again will he have to do the hardest but decent thing

Has anyone got any reccomendations?

dont no if this will help but i had a dog years ago hit a beck and broke her neck 2 slite fractures it

heeled well but the poor bitch never ran the same again so i had to part with her?

Had 2 dog's break their kneck,s neither survived, (killed outright), can't imagine it being an easy injury to recover from, good luck with her. But i think it would be kinder to make that hard decision. Just my opinion

My mate Andy and I had litter bothers his broke its neck in an orchard running a rabbit and died instantly.I don't know how good the chances of recovery are but I would recommend you get in touch with your local Greyhound Track and ask for their Vets tel no ,contact him and see what he says .I allways take running dogs to running dog Vets ,ie Track vets,for all but the most basic of injuries ,GOOD LUCK!

good luck with the dog mate, i think its better sometimes if they die outright on injuries like that at least they don't have to go through all the pain and moping about.

The lads not slept for two days, he's got her on the couch now and he's dog sitting. She won't drink but she'll take soft food. Poor f****r I don't envy him being in the position he's in.

I've gave him some numbers for running dog vets and he's gonna ring them first thing in the morning. Fingers crossed.

Its looking like its 50/50 that she will be good as new or not doesn't it. I'll speak to him tomorrow and see what the vets say.

recently i lost my lurcher -

 

fractured spine , and punctured lung , due to him working , best thing was to put him to sleep .

lost a dog a few years back to a broken neck was not killed out right had to get him pts was gutted allmost gave up the dogs all together . hope your mate has a better out come.

My Staghound bitch broke her neck last season, and broke her tail (then had to have it amputated) and she just has a five inch tail...she went and broke that as well!...so now i got a 31", 75lbs sighthound, with a five inch tail with a kink in it, with a slightly bent neck!...looks a hell of a mess!

 

The neck came good mate, and it hasnt stopped her killing what ever she wants, including raccoons and coyotes...she hasnt had the chance to run smaller game since though, maybe a jinking hare/rabbit would be hard for her!?...but i dont realy get the chance to run them anymore anyway, and i have other dogs i can use.

 

My bitchs neck was so bad, her head was at a 90 degree angle to her body!...horrible to look at...nothing but complete rest in her crate for months, then walks on leash, massage, and phisyo...took ages, but the bitch is summat special imo, so she was worth it...i thought i was gonna have to shoot her, it was so bad.

 

She is now fine though, even if she is a little hard on the eyes...she looks good batterying a coyote though!..lol.

my six year old lurcher bitch broke her neck at a year old.the vet laid out the options but the only one for us seemed to be to put the bitch in a neck brace and hope for the best.i had her x-rayed and when it was put up onto the board the vet said "we should be looking at a dead dog" the two vertebrae were clearly out of place.

i was told that i could come home oneday to find her dead or paralized as the healing bone could thicken and crush the nerve or whatever.

 

i was advised that the best outcome would be that she would live but would never work again and wouldnt have full movement.the neck brace would need to be in place for six weeks.the vet did say that the bitch had very strong neck muscles and was showing alot of willpower to keep her head up through the pain.

the pain medication was kept as low as possible as he didnt want her to feel nothing and therefore injure herself further.

 

after two weeks i was due to go back for another x-ray but the dog was fine and the vet agreed it was an unnecessary risk.within three weeks the bitch was back out bushing with the terriers.

 

at the time i did ask on the old moochers site if this had happened to anyone else and recieved a pm by a big poster back then saying i was being cruel and should do the right thing and put her to sleep.i always laugh when i hear this "experts" name occasionally mentioned on these forums.

 

my bitch is still going strong.

 

the vet said he would keep the x-ray to show students as they dont often see dogs survive such injuries.

He phoned the vets in Oldham this morning who said that he's seen worse breaks go on to carry on racing coursing with no problems so things sound a bit better. She's going there on monday for an xray and a check over so fingers crossed.
