Just by way of light relief. I offer the following .

As we know lots of people were displaced by the WW2 . I was born in a dock area and so the ethnic mix in the class had the double whammy of history and location.

Somehow a Russian lad was part of my class of United and not so United nations.

He was exceptionally useless. Football, reading, swimming, scrapping, PE. He was  just shit.

He couldn't even take the cane with any dignity. Most lads would take their punishment  'like a man'.  No flinching, no girly sobbing. If you really wanted status, you grinned at the teacher and appeared nonchalant. The Ruskie used to weep, scream and, on a couple of occasions, ran off home.

He looked just like a Ghenkis Khan type. If he had a fur hat he would have been indistinguishable.

The thing I most remember about him though were the two ringlets of green snot which always lay between his nostrils and top lip. Occasionally the teacher would roar at him to stop sniffing  and wipe his nose. He dutifully obliged, but with an absence of handkerchiefs or tissues in those far off days, he would wipe his  nose on his sleeve. As a result one of his nicknames was 'shiny sleeves.' 

Here endeth my memories of the Russian character.

What year was this mate ?……I’d be interested for you to describe the ethnic mix more.

I just have an interest in such things and every day is a school day as they say.
