harryshounds 1,379
The ancient myths although they've been exaggerated and turned into magical stories hold the truth at their core.

Seagull 387
It's quite sad and interesting our history, we have this romantic idea that we descend from the people that made Stonehenge, when in reality over 90% of the gene pool was replaced by people's from the Steppes. History has shown throughout the globe, nothing is set in stone, and the population of any given area very rarely is a reflection of the past.
WILF 49,729
I heard a thing the other day, can’t verify it and I forget who I was watching but he said that upto the 1930s, something like 99% of British people could have traced a direct bloodline back 1000 years to Britains of that time….i think that’s an amazing thing if true. Furthermore, he said the Norman’s and the Saxons didn’t have the effect genetically that we all believe they did…..as in, the Norman’s didn’t interbreed with the general population because they were mainly just ruling class and a very small group that kept to other ruling class types. The Saxons account for about 2 or 5 % of genetic inheritance. So, the point was to say that this common tale that Britains are all the product of immigration and some sort of vast genetic soup simply is factually incorrect. As I say, I can’t verify it but it’s food for thought. Edited 18 hours ago by WILF

harryshounds 1,379
Dna science has proven there were probably 3 distinct migrations into Ireland, probably England too. Stonage Hunter Gathers from Iberia, then the farmers from Middle East then the beaker people from Ukraine. We are all definitely a mix of these. Similar in Ireland though, it's was thought the Celts had a much big impact on Irelands history but dna has proved thats not the case. Dna has proven that it's more likely Celts didnt have the impact it was thought and that Celtic language for example may basically already have been here and the Celts were more of a mix of already established cultures. harryshounds 1,379
1000 yrs ago is nothing in comparison to our true history, it's basically modern history.

Cheers. That's what's fascinating, go far enough back and we will all share a common ancestor. That's why I have to laugh when folk get uptight when we discuss human history. harryshounds 1,379
It was thought for example the celts brought the language to Ireland but there's references to places and descriptions of places that go back in our language that predates well before the "arrival" of the celts. Common understanding up to now was 10,000 yrs ago we were all hunter gatherers living in nomadic tribes etc....but recent discoveraries in Turkey show that up to 12,000 yrs ago there were very established, settled cultures buildings sophisticated monuments.... So DNA science and modern archeology is debunking alot of what we thought was true.
