Billy b 826
It's very good that gyms like that and physical culture in Putney are still open for business after all these years

Oh wow thats brilliant mate good find i'll have a watch of that tomorrow.....i was born literally 3 minutes from that gym, most local lads like myself have trained there at one point or another even fighters as very few boxing gyms back in the 70's/80's had weights......its a lovely old gym with a nice community feel about it,always was.....behind it is the Avebury Estate not a particularly pleasant place full of dealers and little gangster types but even they have the respect to stay clear of the place.....im sure you know the score in many gyms when somebody is doing a heavy lift you'll give the person silence, well in there they'll give a little 9 stone weakling doing a 90lb bench press exactly the same respect its just got a nice feel to it,dont get me wrong its no longer a gym that serious lifters use for obvious reasons but its still got its place. Some good characters have come out of there Georgie Manners passed away a few years ago im pretty sure he won a couple of Commonwealth Golds,Arthur White was British champion at least 5 times,Ernie Parks held the unequipped deadlift world record for years he might still hold it today im not sure.....he must be into his 80's now and id almost guarentee he still lifts in that gym 3 or 4 times per week.....i poke my head round the door every now and then just to see how things are going it looks like they're getting chucked out i think they're on their second or third eviction extension as the council want the site, its a shame as its a cracking area for strength/fitness its less than a mile from the York Hall as well......theres a brand new Pure Gym round the corner and another fancy chain gym i forget which one up the road so the council are saying theres adequate gyms in the area......but none have the character or history of that old place.....sign of the times i suppose.
